E12: The Continuum Concept: Emotional Development in Infancy

vendredi 5 décembre 2025Durée 45:32

Promoting Confidence, Calm and Independence in Children, without the "Mum Guilt".

In this thought-provoking episode, Lisa dives into the Continuum Concept, the influential 1975 book by Jean Liedloff, and explores how its ideas compare to modern parenting.

Lisa unpacks what the book gets right, what doesn’t apply to today’s families, and how parents can take gentle, grounding lessons from it without guilt or pressure.

Drawing from her own honest reflections (including the mistakes she believes she made as a new mum), Lisa explains how historical parenting practices still influence us today and how we can tune back into our instincts, respond to our children’s needs, and nurture emotional security from infancy through early childhood.

This is a powerful, reassuring episode for any parent who has ever felt torn between instinct and outdated advice.

💛 In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • What the Continuum Concept actually is and what Jean Liedloff observed in rural Venezuela
  • How historical Western parenting (1950s–1970s) shaped our current beliefs about crying, feeding, routines, and independence
  • Why parents today still feel guilt, confusion and pressure from outdated parenting culture
  • The importance of physical closeness, co-regulation and responding to your baby’s cues
  • How to support emotional security in babies and older children
  • Why independence develops naturally (and why you don’t have to force it)
  • What parts of the Continuum Concept don’t hold up — and how to adapt the useful pieces for modern life

🧡 Key Takeaways

  • Babies are born expecting closeness, responsiveness and connection.
  • Some mainstream parenting advice from the past still influences our instincts today.
  • Mistakes are normal — what matters is how we show love, presence and connection going forward.
  • You can nurture your child’s sense of worthiness and emotional rightness at ANY age.
  • Parenting isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence.

E 3: Why won't my baby sleep?

samedi 12 juillet 2025Durée 45:09

In this important episode, Lisa tackles one of the most exhausting and emotional challenges for new parents — baby sleep problems. Drawing from her years as a paediatric physiotherapist and her own experience as a mum to a sleep-challenged baby, Lisa breaks down the most common sleep issues parents face and offers practical, evidence-based solutions you can start today.

In This Episode, Lisa Covers:

✅ The 4 most common baby sleep problems:

  • Frequent night wakings beyond expected for their age
  • Short daytime naps and inability to link sleep cycles
  • Babies who struggle to fall asleep independently
  • Day-night confusion in newborns

✅ Why babies don’t instinctively know how to fall asleep — and how you can gently teach them over time.

✅ The essential role of awake tummy time, natural daylight exposure, and movement stimulation during the day in promoting better sleep at night.

✅ How our modern safe sleep guidelines (Back to Sleep campaign) unintentionally contribute to disrupted baby sleep — and safe, physiotherapist-approved ways to counteract these effects.

✅ Practical tips on:

  • Swaddling safely and effectively (with a link to Lisa’s free video tutorial)
  • Creating an ideal sleep environment (including blackout blinds & white noise)
  • Supporting babies through sleep transitions

Miniseries E 5: Prenatal Anxiety and Postnatal Depression

lundi 23 juin 2025Durée 36:09

In this heartfelt episode of our miniseries, The Baby Basics: What No one Tells You,  I step away from my paediatric physiotherapy role and speak as a mum. I open up about my personal experience with pre- and postnatal anxiety and depression. I talk about the moments I never expected, the feelings no one warned me about, and the quiet struggles behind the newborn photos. This is an honest conversation inspired by my own journey as well as the many mothers I have worked with who's worries for their baby has negatively impacted on those early days of becoming a parent.

I’ll also be sharing some gentle, practical tips that helped me navigate those tougher days. If you’re expecting,  a new parent, or supporting someone who is, I hope this episode reminds you that you’re not alone and gives you some helpful advice.

With love to you and your baby,

Miniseries E 4: Moulded Baby Syndrome: How to Identify and Prevent it

vendredi 13 juin 2025Durée 38:38

Thank you for tuning in to the fourth episode of this miniseries where I give you all the scoop on the stuff that nobody tells you before you have your baby!

Today I am talking about Moulded Baby Syndrome, because the issues it can cause are so easy to prevent - if you know how to spot it as soon as your baby is born!

I  explain exactly what it is, what to look out for and if you are at risk of your baby having it. We will touch on the corrective treatment methods if your baby is already having consequences of it and guide you where to go for more help should you need it.

Hopefully you will be reassured after listening that you will be able to intervene early when your baby arrives or, for the older babies, have a plan of action to sort it out!

With love and best wishes for your baby,

Lisa
