Ep. 5: What is SAMAR? An Improvised Raqs Sharqi Experience
“So… I have an idea.”
In this episode, we pull back the curtain on how SAMAR came to be—and what it’s evolving into. We talk about the early conversations that sparked the project, how we approach selecting music, and why improvisation in Raqs Sharqi felt like something the community was missing. At its core, SAMAR is about creating space for live music, connection, and a different kind of bellydance experience—one that feels a little more raw, a little more spontaneous, and very alive. We’re also excited to share that Melissa Gamal is coming to town for SAMAR Presents in August! We talk about what’s coming up, the workshops she’ll be teaching, and why we’re so excited to bring her here.
