Introducing this episode's featured guest, Tiffany Luvv. Tiffany Luvv is a country/pop artist born in Montreal, QC. She is 1/2 of the Sundown Sessions, along with folk singer, Amy Craze, which is a monthly music showcase at The Rivoli in Toronto supporting indie artists of all genres. They've built a community of music makers and music lovers and they help artists with promotion, resources, mentoring and so much more. When it comes to her music, her goal is simply to make you feel something by connecting with her unique tone and natural twang. In 2023, she was chosen out of over 80 applicants to perform at Show Love which took place at the Rivoli. This incredible event gave her the idea to reach out to the Rivoli for her music series as well because it was such an honour for her to perform there. Currently working on her debut EP and playing shows for the best audiences there is, Luvv has always been an advocate for mental health, indie artists and women in music. I am your host, Emma Della Rossa, and today I will be interviewing Tyrese Walters. Tyrese Walters is a choral conductor, composer, and singer based in Toronto. He is a graduate of Western University with a Bachelor of Music with Honours in Voice Performance, where he studied Voice with Prof. Torin Chiles and conducting with Prof. Kathleen Allan and Dr. Mark Ramsay. In his final year at Western, he co-lead and co-conducted the Student Choral Initiative, a 20 member choir, within the University’s Faculty of Music. He also sang with Chorale and the Western University Singers. He is the recipient of many awards and scholarships, including the Deral Johnson Legacy Award in Choral Music Conducting (2021), the Richard G. Manuel Music Award (2022), and the Deral Johnson Award (2022) which is awarded to a graduating student who has made an outstanding contribution to the Western University Singers. Tyrese is currently studying at the University of Toronto where he is completing a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting with Dr. Jamie Hillman where he has been awarded the Elmer Iseler National Graduate Fellowships in Choral Conducting (2022, 2024) and the Inclusive Excellence Admissions Scholarships for Black and Indigenous Master’s Students (2022). Tyrese is an experienced choral singer and conductor. He is the conductor of the low-voice ensemble, “Rocambolesco,” and the associate conductor of the 60-voice youth choir “Frisson” with Modern Sound Collective. Tyrese is also the assistant conductor of the new MSC Choirs ensemble Datsuzoku, an 80-voice youth and young adult choir. He previously served as the assistant conductor of Resonance Youth Choir and as the conductor of Cawthra Park’s low voice ensemble, the Boys in B. Tyrese has sung with a wide range of ensembles, including the University of Toronto’s Macmillan Singers, the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Sehnsucht (Modern Sound Collective), Concreamus (Modern Sound Collective) and Babel. Tyrese is also an Associate Conductor with Young Voices Toronto where he works with their mixed-voice youth choir, Encore. Tyrese is also a dynamic soloist and educator. He has performed roles ranging from musical theatre, opera, and oratorio including Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls (Cawthra Park Secondary School), Mr. Braithwaite (Cawthra Park Secondary School), William Still/Reverend Sam Green in Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line Into Freedom (Nathaniel Dett Chorale), as well as ensemble roles in Elisir D’Amore and Opera Workshop Gala (Western University Opera). Recently, he has been invited back to his alma mater Cawthra Park Secondary School (Regional Arts Program) as an Artist in the Classroom working with senior vocal performance majors, and as an adjudicator for the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) vocal competition. Tyrese is passionate about social justice, fashion, theatre arts, and exploring new, innovative ways to interact with and perform choral music. I am your host, Emma Della Rossa, and today I will be interviewing Amiel Ang. Amiel Ang is a multi-instrumentalist and interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto, Ontario. He is currently completing a Bachelor’s of Music in Percussion Performance at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and is the recipient of the Avedis Zildjian Percussion Scholarship for 2024-2025. Amiel has been heard in acclaimed concert halls and has been successful in numerous Canadian solo competitions resulting in solo concerto performances. An active drumkit player, Amiel has performed in the pits for numerous musical theatre productions both on and off of the University of Toronto campus. Amiel co-founded the independent multimedia production company, March Break Forever in 2020. In April 2022, he composed and produced the score for original short film “GOOSE SPIT” directed by Nick Kastanis, which premiered in the Landmark Cinemas of Whitby, Ontario. I am your host, Emma Della Rossa, and today I will be interviewing Denise De'ion. Denise De’ion is an award-winning music producer, artist, and songwriter. Her music is a mix of R&B, Pop, Caribbean, and Hip Hop, but it's really a unique vibe that stands out on its own. She's been in the music industry for over 15 years and has worked on many different projects. In 2023, she released a 5-track EP called Peace of My Soul, which focused on Soul and R&B music. In 2022, she contributed as a producer to the album Stock Exchange by Haviah Mighty, which won a Juno Award. In 2021, she was chosen to be part of the Bacardi Music Liberates Music Campaign, where she got to work with Boi-1da and release a song called “Juice” as an NFT that you can listen to on streaming platforms. Her music has also been used in commercials, like for Bulleit Whiskey, and featured in TV shows like Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia and Kim’s Convenience. Besides making music, Denise has been invited to speak at various conferences, sharing her knowledge with others in the music industry. She is a classical trained pianist with a jazz vocal degree. Using her music knowledge and passion for pop music, she creates a unique blend of pop with dark drama and orchestral sounds. Lovelee is fierce yet vulnerable with an eccentric persona; influenced by icons such as Lady Gaga, Halsey, Melanie Martinez and Freddie Mercury. She writes about the labyrinth of struggles, unraveling tales of self-growth, acceptance, mental health, religion, and heartbreak. Her new album Phase 2: Power Struggle just dropped on September 27 2024. "I'm a huge advocate for mental health awareness and believe in the acceptance of all cultures and identities," she says. Her music helps turn painful experiences into empowering anthems, offering solace to those who find refuge in her art. "I'm ultimately a storyteller — through music, art, fashion and movement“ she says. A graduate of York University's Music Program, Lovelee holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a testament to her dedication to the craft. Her songwriting will make you question “How does she know my life?” Kate describes her discography as “a whole lot of light, with a whole lot of bite.” Teaming up with Grammy-nominated producer Jared Anderson, Kate’s new EP Before the Lights Go Out explores themes of vulnerability, love, and self-discovery. I am your host Emma Della Rossa, and today i will be interviewing Laura Welle. Laura Bazzucchi, aka Laura Welle is an Italian singer-songwriter now based in Toronto. After building a diverse repertoire of cover songs, she passed an audition in 2016 in Milan, for the independent Italian record label, ‘Rosso Al Tramonto’. She co-wrote her first single ‘Ci Ballo Su’ together with Luca Sala, an Italian singer-songwriter who has been working with big names of the Italian music industry. The song was played on nearly 150 Italian radio stations and reached more than 100,000 views on YouTube. In 2017 she decided to adopt the stage name, Laura Welle, to move toward the international music market. between 2018 and 2019 she wrote and recorded her first indie-pop EP in English. Along with dropping singles as an independent artist, Laura collaborated on two projects with independent British label Krafted, which releases electronic music. The first one was called “The Wave”; (October 1, 2021), an EP, written by Laura and produced by Paul Sawyer. The Radio Edit was broadcast on BBC Radio 1 many times from October 2021 to January 2022. The EP reached 11th position on the electronic music section on iTunes. These results made Krafted decide to work on another EP, “Burning”, that dropped June 10, 2022. The Radio Edit debuted even before the official release day as an official preview on BBC Radio 1, creating much hype and curiosity. The track was later broadcast several times on BBC Radio 1, reaching #1 on Beatport, holding the position for almost a month. Her latest single, ‘Ladylike’ was produced by Toronto artist Samosa King and has seen the most immediate growth in ratings since the first day of release. I am your host Emma, and today I will be interviewing Giancarlo Binetti. Giancarlo Binetti is a french horn player and conductor based in the Greater Toronto Area. He started music in high school at Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham, and went on to do a Bachelor of Classical Performance in french horn at York University, as well as a Masters' degree in musicology, focusing on the study of wind band conducting, the role of the artistic director, and concert band administration in Ontario. He frequently plays and conducts in community bands like Rouge River Winds and the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra, leads a brass quintet, participates in independent freelance projects, and subs for semi-professional orchestras all around the GTA. Giancarlo works closely with Colin Clarke as an assistant to his youth orchestras, leading occasional rehearsals and sectionals as needed. He also has private teaching experience, and his brass studio is open for all students. She is a graduate from the University of Toronto’s Masters of Music Technology and Digital Media program where she studied music business, entrepreneurship, marketing, psychology, recording, and production. She also holds a Bachelor of Music and Minor in Sociology from the same institution and is regularly requested as a guest lecturer for extracurricular programs such as Future Sounds 6ix and the Amplify! Mentorship Program. Kristen was recently selected for the Women in Music Canada Leadership Accelerator program, learning new business strategies from a wide variety of industry leaders and joining a community of high-achieving women in Canadian music. She holds extensive experience from across the music industry, including rights management, artist management, music publishing, and digital media development, and currently works as an Account Executive with Canadian music rights organization, SOCAN. In her work at SOCAN, Kristen manages high-profile member accounts, spearheads policy developments and revisions, and acts as a mentor for the company’s Summer Internship Program. She is regularly consulted for her knowledge in music publishing, and has organized staff SQL training to improve data literacy. She is a staunch advocate for music rights and equitable compensation for artistic work, and is regularly commissioned as an arranger, producer, and performer for artists and schools across Canada. I am your host Emma Della Rossa, and today I will be interviewing Parisa Sabet. Dr. Sabet is a composer of electroacoustic, acoustic, and film music. Her most recent interdisciplinary work, Silent, was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement in Toronto. Blue Girl is another of her recent works: honoring the stories of women who self-immolate as a form of protest against domestic violence and forced marriage. Presented at the 2020 virtual Nuit Blanche Festival, it was recognized by Now Toronto magazine as a “Stellar Highlight” of that year’s arts scene. In her academic work, Dr. Sabet focuses on Persian culture, and the synthesis of Western and Persian musical languages. In 2013, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada supported her study of a Persian folk dance, Čūb-Bāzī (“dance with sticks”). Although banned in Iran, the dance is still secretly performed: her orchestral composition, Those Still Dancing, arose from her findings. As an educator, her current research-creation project, No Need to Vanish, focuses on developing, designing, and producing contemporary learning resources that are practical, accessible and innovative for musicians from diverse personal and educational backgrounds. Her debut album, A Cup of Sins, was released on August 26, 2022. With funding from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, the recording includes a variety of her acoustic and electroacoustic works, all of which address issues of human rights, persecution, oppression, violence against women, and freedom of speech. Dr. Sabet earned a Doctor of Musical Arts, a Master of Music in composition, and a Master of Music Technology and Digital Media from the University of Toronto. I am your host Emma, and today I will be interviewing Chris Weins Christopher Wiens is an audio engineer & drummer based out of the Greater Toronto Area. His work includes recording, mixing, mastering, and live sound for music, as well as recording and editing Audiobooks for Penguin Random House Canada. Musically he has performed regularly in jazz ensembles such as Mason Victoria’s SSJO, rock bands like For Jane (now known as Dilettante), as well as music theatre productions around the GTA. From an early age he took interest in music and recording, playing with his dad’s cassette machines, as well as learning piano & drums. Eventually he began performing weekly in the church his family attended, and began taking music seriously while in an arts program in high school. This led him to Humber College’s Bachelor of Music program where he began studying with Larnell Lewis, Mark Kelso, and Peter Cook, among others, and was given the opportunity to perform with Christian McBride and Emilie Claire-Barlow. While at Humber College, Christopher was also introduced to thinking about recording in a more serious way. Fascinated by recorded sounds' unique ability to recreate or heighten reality, he started to explore it more and soon began a Masters in Music Technology at the University of Toronto, studying with Jeff Wolpert, Eliot Britton, Greg Newsome, and Cathrine Moore. Now having finished this masters program, Christopher continues working in the GTA as a freelance audio engineer & drummer, and has also released his first independent project entitled ‘ensemble none.’ You can find it on Bandcamp and other streaming services. Jaye Marsh is a Canadian flutist and leader of the FACTOR-funded and Canada Council for the Arts supported ‘Flute in the Wild’ project that takes people into Canada’s wild spaces through a flute lens. She is also crossing genres as the founder of the new eclectic darkwave band Aphrodite Unbound, a flute and percussion ensemble playing original songs, covers, and new art music. Jaye is The Wild Flute, a recording artist, video director, principal flutist of the Peterborough Symphony, orchestral freelancer, and event producer. With her current efforts, she is encouraging the Canadian art music scene to embrace indie pop marketing and promotion tactics while promoting Canadian composers to an international audience. Kaitlyn Aquino is a passionate Neurologic Music Therapist (NMT) with a Master of Music in Applied Music and Health Sciences from the University of Toronto under the supervision of Dr. Corene Thaut, co-founder of Neurologic Music Therapy. She is the founder of Rhythmic Rehab Inc, a rehabilitation company providing high quality Neurologic Music Therapy services to individuals with neurologic impairment in Toronto, Ontario. Her expertise spans across the lifespan, from neurodevelopmental disorders to neurologic illness and injury, with a focus on supporting cognitive, sensorimotor, speech and language, and psychosocial needs within an interdisciplinary team. Specializing in neurorehab, she completed her clinical training with MEDRhythms at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and the Neurologic Music Therapy Services of Arizona. She is active within the music therapy community, serving as Treasurer for the Music Therapy Association of Ontario. Kaitlyn is dedicated to collaborating with community partners to advocate, educate and treat, helping individuals find their rhythm. I am your host, Emma Della Rossa, and today I will be interviewing Christopher Ma. Christopher Ma is a Toronto-based singer songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Their body of work spans 12 full-length albums, EPs, Christmas records, and more, drawing from a variety of genres and sounds but mainly working in the realms of rock and folk. They were born and raised in Scarborough, singing and playing the drums, guitar, euphonium and tuba throughout high school and university. Writing, producing, mixing and mastering their music alone in their home studio, Christopher has consistently released projects every year since 2015, taking the opportunity with each one to try something new. Although they rarely performed their music live for the better part of their music career, starting in 2022 Christopher has been playing shows with a live band, notably at Pearson Int. Airport for YYZ Live and for headlining shows at The Black Swan Tavern and, most recently, The Baby G. They are currently working on their 13th album. I am your host, Emma Della Rossa, and today I will be interviewing Griffin Hook. Griffin Hook (He/Him/His) is a Canadian composer based in Thornhill, Ontario. Griffin’s work is aimed toward both screen and stage, primarily focusing on the world of Wind Ensemble music. His band works have been recorded, workshopped, & premiered by the Westmount Symphonic Winds, Newmarket High School, the University of Toronto Wind Symphony, University of Toronto Wind Ensemble, and the National Youth Band of Canada. Known for writing music that is cinematic and imaginative, Griffin’s unique compositional style blends traditional concert band form with the creative energy of film scores to create pieces that are exciting & enjoyable for musicians, conductors, ensembles, and audiences alike. As a graduate of the Comprehensive Studies program at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and currently part of the Music Scoring for Screen & Stage program at Sheridan College, Griffin has had the opportunity to write music in collaboration with students from Sheridan Animation to create original scores for their thesis films and has partnered with students in UofT Computer Science, OCAD Digital Futures, & Centennial Game-Art to create soundtracks for independent video game projects. Griffin also focuses in audio recording/editing, digital audio synthesis, and conducting. All works are self-published under GriffinHMusic.
