Why Coon Hunting with Hounds Matters10 Jan 201900:48:42

Hunting raccoons with hounds is as culturally iconic as apple pie. Liberal hunting seasons, lots of raccoons, ample amounts of public land and fun with hounds are just part of the allure. Coonhunting is fun option to recruit new hunters and your kids will love it, too. Coonhunting is a great way to acquire some beautiful pelts and, from a conservation angle, temporarily get rid of nest predators.

In this podcast we go on a live coon hunt in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas with Clay Newcomb and a first time hunter, Jonathan Webster. They discuss the history of coonhunting, what tree dogs are, the history of Plott hounds and the how-to of free casting hounds for coonhunting. You’ll hear the dogs strike and tree a coon and be right in the excitement. Be sure to listen until the end when their conversation turns into a play-by-play coonhunt! Backcountry Hunting Using Mules03 Jan 201900:55:42

In this episode of the Bear Hunting Magazine Clay and two youth hunters are whitetail hunting during a late-season rifle hunting in Arkansas using mules. Sitting around the fire they discuss their hunt, but primarily discuss the pros and cons, and ideology of using mules to access the backcountry for hunting.

In 2017, Clay trained a young mule that he is know using for hunting. It was his first time to train a mule and the experience changed his life! You can watch a video at of his training at this link (https://youtu.be/t9TmMEsezhY). The video has over 800,000 views on YouTube! In the episode Clay tells his son, "Your dad gets cussed everyday on Youtube..." It was his first time to train and many thought he didn't do a good job, other praised him! The equine world has many barriers to entry, but using mules has been a unique addition to way Clay chooses to hunt.

The guys are deer hunting, but are also scouting for bear. Intimate knowledge of the regions where you plan to bear are critical and you get to know the country through utilizing for all types of hunting - this is primary reason they deer hunt here. Bear Hunting With Hounds in the Appalachians with Houston Valley Plotts19 Dec 201801:28:20

Bear hunting with hounds in the Appalachian mountains of Eastern Tennessee is a cultural experience. On this podcast we sit down with long-time Plott breeder and bear hunter, Tracy (TL) Jones of Greeneville, Tennessee to discuss some plot history, what he looks for in a bear hound, and we’ll tell some bear hunting stories. Even if you aren’t a hound hunter, this podcast is for you! Our hope is that you get a glimpse into this unique hunting niche and end up with a respect for it. Hound hunting is one of the most misunderstood types of hunting, but I think you’ll see why it’s important that you support it, even if you don’t ever care to be a part of it. Bear hunting with hounds is one of the most traditional methods of bear hunting. Many of the iconic American hunters of the past including Daniel Boone and Teddy Roosevelt were avid hound hunters.

It’s anything but the lazy man’s way to hunt, and would rival any of the hunting styles on the planet in terms of difficulty and skills needed to consistently take game. The hunters have to be tough, dedicated and have intricate knowledge of the area to be successful. But most importantly, a good bear houndsman has to consistently produce dogs that will “catch” bear. Whether it’s treeing a bear or baying one on the ground, it takes a tremendous animal with a very unique skill set to do it day after day. Great bear hounds are few and far between even in good lines of hounds. As you listen to this podcast I think you’ll grow in appreciation for the bear houndsman and what he does. Check out www.bear-hunting.com for more great bear hunting content.

Public Land Spot-and-Stalk Bear Hunting with Moe Shepherd13 Dec 201801:40:59

On this episode of the Bear Hunting Magazine podcast, Moe Shepherd and Clay Newcomb discuss hunting black bear on public land in the Eastern Deciduous forest without the use of bait or hounds. You might call it spot and stalk, but really it’s doing whatever it takes to take a bear which might involve treestand hunting, still hunting, hunting off the ground in a stationary position or spotting a bear and stalking it. We talk about how to find bears, where to find them, what they’re eating, what kind of sign to look for and the mentality you’ll need to be successful. We also tell some fun stories of successful hunts.

This is certainly one of the most difficult hunts in North America, yes, you read that right – we gladly invite the most elite of Western hunters to the East and give them a week to kill a bear! It isn’t easy! Bears are low density animals, and when you combine that with low visibility you end up with a challenging hunt, but that’s what makes it so satisfying when success finds you. Please check out www.bear-hunting.com and subscribe to Bear Hunting Magazine for more great information about hunting the icon of North American wilderness – the bear.

Iconic Public Land Hunting Stories29 Nov 201801:09:21

This is a special episode of the Bear Hunting Magazine podcast where host Clay Newcomb takes you to the campfire at his family’s annual public-land deer hunt in Southwest Arkansas. Around the fire are his kids, brothers, nephew, father and some family friends. You’ll hear some iconic stories of Gary Newcomb’s 40-year bowhunting career on public land in Arkansas. These are stories that impacted Clay as a young hunter and still hold the intrigue that family hunting stories do.

It’s a unique podcast because it’s being told an attentive audience of family and friends over the sound of a crackling fire. Clay also shares some of his most iconic hunts from his early years of bowhunting public land in Arkansas including some close calls with hogs on the ground, wrestling a deer, and chasing down a turkey on foot. Last Day Hunt: Clay Newcomb’s Gnarly Canadian Whitetail15 Nov 201801:12:30

On the sixth and final of his Canadian hunt, Clay Newcomb of Bear Hunting Magazine harvests a massive & gnarly old buck 14 minutes before the end of legal shooting light in Manitoba. It was a tough hunt, rut activity was slim to none by this time, but he finally caught up with a buck on a feeding pattern.

It got a little western when a coyote ran the buck out of a field at daylight while Clay was stalking into shooting range. He ended up building a brush blind and waiting for 9.5 hours for the buck to return. It worked! Clay and James Lawrence are in the truck headed back home and discuss the details of the exiting final hunt. Canada may seem out of reach for many, but it’s not nearly as hard as you might think.

Hunting Giant Canadian Whitetails with Tom Ainsworth12 Nov 201801:01:45

Have you ever wanted to hunt the giant whitetails of Canada? On episode #8 of the Bear Hunting Magazine podcast we sit with Tom Ainsworth of Grandview Outfitters to discuss an array of topics, but our focus is big Canadian whitetails. Tom has been hunting the same large tract of agricultural land for over 40 years and has guided hunters to countless massive whitetails. He himself killed a 208” buck in the early 1980s and hasn’t hunted the property himself since. The largest client-killed buck was 193”. Clay Newcomb has now hunted with Tom for two years and had some tremendous hunts, including a 152” massive bowkill buck in 2017. At the time of this recording Clay had yet to take a deer in 2018, but that would change on the final day of the hunt (podcast #10). Tom just two years ago got out of the bear outfitting business, but he briefly talks about the big bears of Manitoba.

Tom gives some history on the Ukrainians that settled this region, the agriculture, the diversity of wildlife and the way they hunt big whitetails. Tom hasn’t been educated by the trends of the modern whitetail media, but rather by four decades of experience watching whitetails on a daily basis. Some of his philosophies might surprise you. You’ll truly enjoy this podcast and it will keep you entertained and informed?

Secrets to Baiting Bears03 Sep 202001:50:12

This is our most informative bear-baiting podcast to date. Veteran bear hunters Heath Martin and Ryan Greb talk with Clay Newcomb, from start to finish, on how to bait and target big bears. They cover topics including: where to place a bait site, what type of feeders to use, how far in advance to start feeding bears, what type of bait and how much, using scent attractants, how to target big bears, hunting strategy for opening day and the proper way to celebrate when you kill a 500 pounder (HA!). You can learn a lot about bear behavior by observing bears at a bait site. Clay attributes his knowledge of the habits of non-baited bears to extensively studying how bears manage food source on bait. Overall, this is the most robust, informative podcast we've done on baiting bears and you're bound to learn something. Good luck bear hunting this fall.

Ted Nugent 'Nuff Said20 Aug 202002:11:12

The name "Ted Nugent" evokes a host of responses from different people. Ted is an iconic rock-and-roll legend and outspoken political pundit, but in the hunting community we know him as "Uncle Ted." He's been the most outspoken hunter on the mainstream American stage for the longest period of time. Early on, Ted brought a new energy, life and zeal into the hunting world along with a positive narrative unlike anything we'd ever heard. Ted is also a controversial figure in many spheres for various reasons, which he addresses in this conversation. On three different occasions Ted plays the guitar for host, Clay Newcomb, including his legendary song, Fred Bear, at the end of the podcast. Clay and Ted discuss the threats to modern hunting, Ted's hunting roots, staying clean and sober for 72 years, poaching, and high fence hunting. Ted brings his legendary enthusiasm; this is not one to miss!

The episode is serious, but is full of laughs about why Malachi won’t go in as partners in a boat with Clay and Josh’s experience as a summer camp graduate of the “Gary Newcomb Hunting School of Hard Knocks.”

Trained By A Hound Dog with Ed Vance03 Dec 202001:36:26

"Born into every generation are restless men with feet that will not stand still, eyes that search for distant mountains, hearts that long to go where the scene is new and the promise of adventure is alive."                                                                                                                                                                                             - George Laycock

There's no better way to describe Ed Vance, our guest on this week's re-release podcast.

Clay visited Ed at his home in the Greenhorn Mountains of Southern California to discuss his inability to stand still as the mountains called him with the promise of bear and lion. Ed has spent a lifetime following hounds and learning about life. They also talk about Ed's book, "Trained by a Hound Dog."

This goes down as one of our favorite podcasts of all time.

Has the thought entered your mind that you need a squirrel dog? If it hasn't, it will soon. Squirrel hunting with dogs is experiencing a resurgence across the country. In this podcast Clay Newcomb, Michael Lanier, Trae Autry and Jason Liles talk about the different squirrel dog breeds, dog registry, how the different breeds hunt, along with some mule talk and general tom foolery in a fun conversation. In summary, there are two types of squirrel dogs - curs and feists. Inside of these two breeds there are multiple strains and they all hunt a little different. This podcast is a must listen for anybody interested in extending their season and becoming a noble squirrel hunter.

The Linchpin of Relevance - The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation09 Apr 202001:12:11

Linchpin: a person or thing vital to an enterprise or organization or a pin passed through the end of an axle to keep a wheel in position.

Understanding the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is the linchpin for understanding the relevance for modern hunting. Clay believes that as hunters we need to know our history, our narrative and our story in a robust way. On this podcast Clay, Kolby Morehead and River Newcomb discuss Shane Mahoney and Valerious Gueist's new book, The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.

You'll get the "short version" of the model and probably learn something - we sure did. This book is an incredible resource and we encourage you to read it!
