The Brand Identity28 Jul 202200:27:23

What works better - working for a big brand or a small company? The answer might surprise you.

People often think of it as a no-brainer. Join a big tech company, and the rest of it takes care of itself until they get jolted out of their silly

perceptions. Likewise, some think working at a startup is the easiest thing to do until the paycheck gets delayed ten days and your bank

account is depleting.

On one hand, money is more at a big brand; on the other, the workload complexity doubles while the role remains straight-jacketed.

However, if you work in a boutique outfit, or a startup, for example, the flexibility is high, but the stability is low.

So how do you decide? Can you afford to make a mistake in this mad rush?

In a  complex world and competitive environment, you need to make decisions wisely.

Tune into this podcast, where I simplify and highlight some of the most common misconceptions or perceptions people have about working in

these two different types of companies.

What kind of a manager are you?22 Jul 202200:23:43

Have you become the boss you'd love to hate or hate to love? For people managers, is life more challenging than you thought it'd be?

I guess so. The question is, what are you doing differently? Or are you becoming just like your manager? Is that good or bad?

Join me in this episode of BasTalk, where I talk about front-line managers and their progression to middle management.

I share three things to consider and leverage if you are not already doing it today.

Toxic Work Culture11 Jul 202200:15:57

Given that culture has been eating strategy for breakfast for many decades, one wonders why hasn't it burped yet?

We've been discussing toxic workplaces for ages, and it does not shock anymore.

If you sit on the throne long enough, the odor stops bothering you.

Everyone knows it exists, because they're breathing it each day.

So why does it persist?

Confirmation Bias08 Jul 202200:12:17

A typical Startup Founders dilemma #23: having conviction vs being in denial!

Some founders are blessed with the gift of the gab & over time they begin to view their own BS as the real deal. This is compunded more in nascent organizations, because no one questions them. So what happens?

They succumb to confirmation bias.

A tendency to search, interpret, and out logic people in a way that confirms or supports their own preconcieved notions, make it sound real and present it as the only truth.

Gradually, they become hyper cynical, convoluted and warped in their thinking. And when results show otherwise, they find yet another counter-logic to justify the original fallacy.  There's so much power in the denial cycle,it sucks in everyone around it.They risk not just their own future but also those who follow them.

Tune in to this episode of BasTalk where I share 3 ways to navigate past confirmation bias.

Career Gaps in Resumes04 Jul 202200:14:13

Career gaps, career breaks, resume gaps, time-off. These more or less mean the same thing: you are not employed.

So when the next opportunity comes your way, you get nervous about the best ways to share the gap-story!

For some its a joyous reason, but for most, it's a sentimental reason, as to why they were not gainfully engaged.

But what if you did not have a sentimental story to share? What if your backstory does not add up? What if your break was your own mistake?

How do you then handle the career gap story when the recruiter reaches out with a new job opportunity?

Tune in to this BasTalk podcast episode to  think about three ways to manager career gaps.

What is the BasTalk podcast all about?28 Jun 202200:01:05

Here's a list of things this podcast does not do:

  1. give you life-changing gyan,
  2. save you money or

Nor is it a typical Tech-Talk, or a Management big-talk.

So what is BasTalk?

BasTalk literally means Simply,Talk!

It's a podcast about people management, career insights and issues from regular office-life!

50 Shades of Envy : The Jealous Colleague22 Jun 202200:12:25

So your colleague got the promotion, but you didn't.
Your best friend at work got a new car, but you didn't.
Your peer bagged the dream job, but you didn't.
How do you feel when subjected to material peer pressure?

Ever since you were a kid, competition has been defined negatively. Envy is drilled into your psyche. So when someone does well, you seldom appreciate the effort & and train your eyes to find faults. Compares are made between children, begin with manners, graduate to grades in exams, and before you know it, it manifests your entire existence at work. Envy makes you a toxic professional at the center of a toxic work culture. So do you blame the organization or your mindset?

Join me in this episode of BasTalk, where I share three simple ways to tackle envy and stay positive.

Who inspects the interviewer's mistakes?13 Jun 202200:14:38

There is a ton of content on how to answer tough interview questions, but very little on whether these questions were correct in the first

place? There is a lot of content on poor quality of job seekers, but very little on poor quality of hiring managers and or the hiring process.

Does your company leadership know why the hiring manager rejected a potential hire?

So join me in this fascinating topic on BasTalk where I share three mistakes most hiring managers or organizations do.

Are you dealing with a God Complex at work?11 May 202200:14:41

When was the last time you felt spoken down by a senior? Telling you that your logic stood no chance over their logic?

Or when was the last time you felt frustrated unable to get your point across to your boss?

Today, yesterday? Or everyday? If that's true, you are not alone facing the person with a god complex.

Simply put , people with god complex have some of the following attributes:

  1. Low attention spans
  2. Sense of entitlement
  3. Over estimation of own talent
  4. Believe to be superior than others
  5. Love validation from others

Sounds familiar? Do you know someone around you with these traits? Or could it be you? In this age of low attention spans, quick talk and blunt retorts, people often confuse god complex with sharpness. The general presumption is , smart people have a sharp tongue, they think fast and have superior logic. If that is the case, how do you separate those with god complex?

Join me in this episode of BasTalk where I try to share ways to deal with god complex at work.

Customer Objections Simplified02 May 202200:09:47

Most sales people fear customer objections. They dread hearing "we have no money" , "you are too expensive" , "we're all set" , "call back in 6 months" etc.

And then all the energy goes out of the system. Mustering up enthusiasm and energy from another call becomes like lifting a mountain with a screwdriver.

Customers on the other hand are tired of flaky salespeople. They are tired of hearing the same stuff repeatedly, they are tired of sales people trying to make

money off of their situation instead of partnering with them. So how do we make headway?

If this resonates with you, tune into BasTalk now.

Tough Love Conversations05 Jul 202100:29:04

Receiving positive feedback is like being in the middle of a dopamine surge, the world looks a brighter place to be in, the traffic doesn't seem to bother, the pollution seems oblivious and the smiles burst into ripples across miles. And then the alarm bell goes off!  You are headed to the official  hell room, also known as the huddle room - where your boss awaits you with feedback.

Soon the dopamine surge is replaced with a cortisol influx and your pulse is racing and beads of sweat bulge at the base of your nose. You dab them repeatedly only to find them reappear. The air-conditioning  seems a bit colder than normal and the silence more deafening. After a quick glance you realize your boss is about to give you the Tough Love conversation.

You catch the vibe immediately. The boss goes on a cold rampage pointing out all the mistakes you've made or goals missed and before they finish the rant, you know what's coming your way. Those three little words - You are fired.

Clearly before that moment you mumble, your defense mechanism kicks in, you argue and deny the accusations, cite all the possible reasons why you were not to be blamed, or at fault, or certainly not alone in this. That wave of plea , argument, counter point crashes into the rock of Gibraltar.

You exit the room with a queasy feeling in your stomach and head spinning with thoughts of the past, present and future. What do you do now?

On the other side of the table, you are the leader who has to deliver this tough love conversation - you are somewhat irritated, some part worried but for most part want to get it over and done with. You expect hostile defense , arguments and even an outburst of emotions. You are armed with feedback and process support from peers, other stakeholders, HRBP and last but not the least your own assessment.

You've done this before and yet, this is always a tricky conversation.

The separation experience need not be a bitter one, it can be done amicably and both parties should maintain dignity of the person and the situation , yet on most occasions it ends up being a fairly unwelcome experience. Join me in this episode of BasTalk where I share ways to receive negative feedback and deliver tough love conversations if you are a leader.

Are you a softie01 Jun 202100:23:44

Given the recent admission of Tennis ace, Naomi Osaka, it opens a can of worms where a world of extroverts define the norm.

Sensitive ,quiet and shy  people are often referred as Softies,  yet as it turns out, they are some of the strongest and most resilient of the lot.

In a world where over communicating ,over stating, going over board with your thoughts and ideas seems like the new normal, someone who

speaks softly ,is reserved and waits their turn is often considered incompetent. In this episode I talk about the introverts who struggle to be

counted and share a. few ways to cope with the extrovert onslaught around them.

Parenting Academics and Jobs24 Apr 202100:21:53

Are you a good parent?  How so? Basis what?  Is it because your ward did exceeding well academically?  If so, why does the industry have

so much mediocrity? Or are you a proud parent because your child has done exactly what you imagined for them? If so, why are so many children

depressed? Are you a succesful organisation because you hired academically top talent?  If so, why do companies fail to grow to their top

potential?

Parenting, academics and your job, are undeniably interconnected isn't it? Yet, with such a compact integration, we have so many anomalies. Think

of those parents whose children are academically challenged fail to show an alternative path or know how to explore other avenues that their

child's talent may offer. Think of those organisations, which are stuck on hiring Pedigree only, and no pun intended, but despite having arguably

the top talent in the country, still struggle with business problems.

So this episode goes out to the trolls and their well- being!

BasTalk 45 - Adult Content02 Oct 202000:29:20

Parental Advisory! Close your eyes: Adult Content.

Now before you jump into conclusion, this is not  about porn.  Sorry to disappoint you! But it is something so important that it affects your life.

Its  about education....for adults, its about educating your parents. When parents guide a child – who’s ensuring they know what they are doing?

There is no parental advisory for parenting ! There are no certificates for parenting – and so in the absence of such guidance most parents fall back on what they think is the right way to parent basis how they were brought up or taking a cue from how the neighbor or relative’s kids. The only trouble with that is, the kid grows up fulfilling the parents wish , often sacrificing their own.
