| Patrick Montgomery, Author of Baseball's Great Expectations and Barbecue Hall of Famer, Ray Lampe AKA Dr. BBQ, Plus Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding | 20 Apr 2024 | 01:53:29 | |
Patrick Montgomery, Author of Baseball's Great Expectations and Barbecue Hall of Famer, Ray Lampe AKA Dr. BBQ, Plus Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding Patrick Montgomery is an award-winning writer. His latest book is Baseball's Great Expectations: Candid Stories of Ballplayers Who Didn't Live Up to the Hype. The book examines nine players who were once poised for greatness, but as the title clearly states, for whatever reason, their playing careers never reached the levels predicted. Revealed ls an often-overlooked side of professional baseball; the struggles with injury, mental exhaustion, pressure, temptations, and sometimes just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We often read books which extol successes, but Patrick shows how difficult that success can be to achieve. Ray Lampe AKA Dr. BBQ has been a lover of barbecue since entering his first rib contest in 1982. He quit the family trucking business after 25 years to become a full-time pit-master,but spent 15 years testing different barbequing styles and participating in cookout competitions before making barbecue his full-time career. Inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2014, Ray is the author of numerous cookbooks, a judge on many televised cooking shows, a winner of numerous cooking competitions, and a restaurateur. He has witnessed and been a part of the surge in barbecue's enormous growth and popularity and shares these many stories. We are joined by guest co-host, Doug Scheiding. | Former New York Yankees Media Relations Executive, Rick Cerrone and Chef Ray Sheehan with a Barbecue Holiday Gift Giving Guide Plus Jeff's Two Cents | 02 Dec 2023 | 01:52:48
Former New York Yankees Media Relations Executive, Rick Cerrone and Chef Ray Sheehan with a Barbecue Holiday Gift Giving Guide Plus Jeff's Two Cents Rick Cerrone was recently inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame. It was a well deserved honor for a man who has been a part of the baseball scene in New York and elsewhere for almost 50 years. He is quite humble as he starts off the interview by crediting his high school guidance counselor for starting him on his career path, but without his talents and strong work ethic this career does not happen; beginning in 1977 when he founded Baseball Magazine. Rick's many jobs in baseball have included working on the public relations staffs for two Baseball Commissioners, co-hosted the radio show, The Sports Connection, and worked as Public Relations VP for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rick finally achieved his dream job when he became the New York Yankees public relations executive, a job he held for 11 seasons while working for George Steinbrenner and a team that won four world championships during that time. The preceding is only a part of his amazing career and when the interview ends you will find yourself wanting more. Ray Sheehan also known as Chef Ray is an award winning maker of barbecue sauces and rubs as well as an award winning cookbook author. He has been a frequent guest and co-host on Baseball and BBQ and we are fortunate he has done extensive research as he presents his barbecue holiday gift giving guide. | We Travel Back to 1935 with Babe Ruth Author, Bob LeMoine and The Sauce is the Boss with Sweet Baby Ray's, Dave Raymond, a 2023 BBQ Hall of Fame Inductee | 11 Nov 2023 | 01:58:42
We travel back to 1935 with Babe Ruth Author, Bob LeMoine and the Sauce is the Boss with Sweet Baby Ray's, Dave Raymond, a 2023 Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee. Bob LeMoine loves baseball and this love began at a very early age. He would lay in bed at night, listening to his small transistor radio and cheer on the Boston Red Sox. Bob is fascinated with Boston and 19th-century baseball history. His latest project is When the Babe Went Back to Boston: Babe Ruth, Judge Fuchs and the Hapless Braves of 1935. It is a fascinating look at Babe Ruth after his time with the New York Yankees ended and he tried to pursue a a second act career as a manager as well as all else from that time until his death. Babe Ruth is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player and this book provides much more interesting information on his life. Dave Raymond aka Sweet Baby Ray has many years of experience in the barbecue industry. In 1982, Dave and his lifelong friend Mike O’Brien used the sauce which Dave's brother Larry developed to build Sweet Baby Ray's, which is now the best-selling barbecue sauce in the country. They sold the business in 2001. In 2005 Dave partnered with his nephew, Larry's son Duce and they opened Sweet Baby Ray's Restaurant. Now a multifaceted business operation, Sweet Baby Ray’s boasts two restaurants and two premier catering companies. Dave is also a member of the competition team, Duce's Wild, which has won over 40 awards since it began competing. Dave is a member of the newly inducted 2023 Barbecue Hall of Fame class. Celebrating Episode 200 In Kansas City With NLBM President, Bob Kendrick, Former MLB Player, Ed Hearn, and BBQ HOF Member, Ardie Davis Episode 200 was not going to pass without us doing something special and so we took the show to Kansas City where baseball and barbecue are part of the city's foundation. While there we had the pleasure of spending time with three previous guests. Bob Kendrick is president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri and was our very first podcast guest almost six years ago. After his first appearance he joined us two more times and each discussion was even better than the one before. This was our first time meeting in person and we were overjoyed to meet Bob as we greatly respect his talents as a baseball historian, phenomenal storyteller, and an incredible steward of the game. We talked about his passion for the museum, the history it preserves, and the stories it tells. Go to https://www.nlbm.com/ for more information on Bob and the museum. Ed Hearn is a former Major League Baseball player. He was part of the New York Mets 1986 World Series Championship and played briefly for the Kansas City Royals. We had Ed on once before and Jeff proudly wore Ed's #49 at New York Mets Fantasy Camp. Ed was extremely thoughtful to invite us into his home where we had the chance to try on his World Serious ring as well as see his other championship memorabilia. We met his wife, Trisha and his dog, Hartley. Ed recently received a new kidney and thankfully is feeling better. It is very special the way that Jeff calls Ed #49 and Ed calls Jeff #49. Ardie Davis was a guest once on the show, but meeting him in person was a huge thrill and he met us on a long line at Slap's BBQ. Ardie is a 2016 Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee in the celebrity/humanitarian category. Ardie is a founder of the American Royal Barbecue Sauce Contest which is the world's largest sauce contest. He is a charter member of the KCBS, instrumental in the development of the Certified Barbecue Judge curriculum, and author of the oath recited by each judge prior to judging a contest. We affectionately refer to him as barbecue royalty and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would say otherwise. The show is filled with congratulatory messages and then Jeff and Len reflect on what the podcast and achieving 200 episodes means to them.
We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you. | The Future of Q with Barbecue News Magazine Publisher, Kell Phelps and Sons of Baseball with Author, Mark Braff | 05 Aug 2023 | 01:44:41
The Future of Q with Barbecue News Magazine Publisher, Kell Phelps and Sons of Baseball with Author, Mark Braff Kell Phelps is the publisher of the Barbecue News Magazine as well as running the National Barbecue Association (NBBQA). He does all of this with his wife, Miss Janet. They have a new endeavor, The Future of Q which is an online magazine written by youths and aimed at the next generation of pitmasters. Kell is an avid Atlanta Braves fan and we discuss both baseball and barbecue. Mark Braff is a diehard baseball fan. The idea for a book about the sons of former major league baseball players had been rattling around Mark's head for more than a decade before he began working on the project. It sprung from the thought of baseball as a bonding experience between so many fathers and sons, from talking about the game to tossing a ball around the yard. But what is it like when dad is a professional baseball player? In the book, Sons of Baseball: Growing Up With a Major League Dad, Braff has interviewed the sons of former MLB players and we learn of the experience as the sons speak. | We Hit It Out Of The Park With New York Yankees MLB.com Beat Reporter, Bryan Hoch and Hoodoo Brown Barbeque's, Alan Stinson | 22 Jul 2023 | 01:48:52
We Hit It Out Of The Park With New York Yankees MLB.com Beat Reporter, Bryan Hoch and Hoodoo Brown Barbeque's, Alan Stinson Bryan Hoch is the New York Yankees MLB.com beat reporter. Covering the team on a daily basis has provided Bryan a chance to witness many great moments and seasons. One of the greatest individual and season long accomplishments of recent memory was last year when New York Yankees slugger, Aaron Judge chased the American League's home run record which was held for 61 years by another Yankees great, Roger Maris who in 1961 had broken Babe Ruth's record of 60. On October 4, 2022 Judge entered the record books as he hit home run number 62. Hoch was there to witness this momentous moment and the other home runs leading up to it. He documents it all in his new book, 62: Aaron Judge, The New York Yankees, And The Pursuit Of Greatness. The book details all of the home runs, but offers a much deeper look at baseball's history and many other players who are a part of it. Bryan's impressions of the late New York Mets broadcaster, Bob Murphy and Back to the Future's, Doc Emmett Brown are a bonus not to be missed.
