Episode 13 - Transcona has a Babe and shocking shake-ups in Election News!08 Aug 202600:57:33

Go to ballotbabes.com and support our podcast, participate in our survey about your city councillor or send us a voice memo!

Election season is getting near and we put city hall, transit, housing, and the dog park fight under the microscope - then Transcona candidate Lora Meseman shows up with the kind of grounded, community-first vision voters are hungry for. If you too are biased toward a livable Winnipeg, this episode is for you. Patty and Sam kick things off with their unapologetically biased take on civic politics, why labor endorsements matter, and what Sherri Rollins' decision to drop out says about the power dynamics at City Hall.

Then Lora Meseman joins the show for a candid, wide-ranging conversation about what Transcona actually needs right now. A longtime community builder and executive director of the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centers, Laura talks about decades of volunteering, raising her family in the ward, and why this is the right time to step up. She shares what she is hearing on the trail, why safe streets, green space, infrastructure, and aging in place all belong in the same conversation.

Lora brings a practical, neighborhood-level perspective to some of the biggest questions in Winnipeg politics: how to build without paving over what people love, how to serve newcomers and longtime residents alike, and how to make sure public investment actually improves daily life.

Essential listening if you want to understand the local election beyond the lawn signs, the outrage posts, and the headlines. If you're trying to decide who deserves your vote - or how to help a candidate you believe in - this conversation gives you a smarter, more hopeful place to start.

What if you understood how municipal money could actually change the way we build our future? This week we have a special guest joining us, Winnipeg’s municipal finance expert Michel Durand-Wood, who unlocks the secrets most voters and even some politicians don’t see, revealing how city infrastructure costs are piling up decades before we realize it, and how understanding these numbers can help you make smarter choices at the ballot box.

In this episode, you'll discover how municipal budgets really work, and why most election promises don’t account for the long-term costs they create. Michel explains why city debt isn’t “bad,” but a part of a much bigger picture involving infrastructure, urban planning, and sustainable growth.

We break down complicated concepts like capital versus operating budgets, infrastructure investment, and tax strategies with surprising clarity, showing how these financial secrets directly impact your daily life, from streets and parks to transit and water.

You’ll learn how the development patterns of the past have locked cities into cycles of debt, costing billions in future taxes and maintenance, bringing to light the real price of growth. Michel shares practical steps for voters, candidates, and community members to get involved and advocate for transparent, responsible city finances.

More importantly, he reveals that the person with the real power to make change, is… wait for it, YOU!

This episode is perfect for anyone frustrated by long-term infrastructure costs, confused by election promises, or eager to see their city become more affordable, sustainable, and livable.

Whether you're a concerned citizen, a city council watcher, or a future voter, Michel’s insights help you see the city’s financial health clearly and act accordingly, because your voice and your vote can shape a smarter, more resilient Winnipeg.

Michel Durand-Wood is the creator of Dear Winnipeg and author of “You’ll Pay for This!” known for translating complex municipal finance into plain language that everyone can understand. His work helps cities across North America recognize that infrastructure isn't just about roads, it's about the future of communities built on solid, responsible finances.

Let’s build smarter cities together, because the future depends on it.

In this episode, we reveal the secret inner workings of Winnipeg’s governance, exposing a system that keeps the public in the dark and makes real change nearly impossible. We dive into the notorious "strong mayor" model, showing how private briefings, limited transparency, and a handful of decision-makers wield control over city projects, from budget cuts to infrastructure delays. Plus, laugh and get outraged as we dissect a recent public works meeting filled with shortcuts, sneaky motions, and political games designed to thwart community efforts.

Episode 2 - Urgent Call! Will you come to Winnipeg City Hall on March 4?02 Mar 202600:37:18

So you care about voting–now what?

Welcome back to Ballot Babes, where we demystify Winnipeg civic politics ahead of the October 28 municipal election! We’re dropping a somewhat urgent episode in light of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works meeting, taking place March 4, 9:30am at City Hall. We’re going to tell you all about what this committee does, who is on the committee, and why you should care about this upcoming meeting! If you can go in person, we highly recommend it; if you can write in comments or delegate at this meeting, we walk you through why engaging with these processes matter when it comes to influencing the fabric of our local democracy.

We’ll be particularly focusing on the scrapping of the temporary bike lane infrastructure hard fought for since 2024, and the motion for city-wide speed limit reduction.

Got feedback, thoughts about your neighbourhood, or you just want a place to vent? Head over to ballotbabes.com and select LEAVE A MESSAGE! We listen to them all, and we’re right there venting with you.
