What makes a good leader in corporate security?

Sam Roper is Director of Enterprise Security Operations EMEA at Netflix, where she oversees all aspects of the corporate security program. In this episode of Back to Source, she discusses her leadership style - which she describes as “direct” - and how to be both open and authentic with your team whilst maintaining their respect. 

She also explores the challenges of returning from maternity leave - or any other career break - into a senior position. What happens when the person who covered your position now has to work for you? And how do you deal with the knowledge that you are, literally, replaceable?

Sam has more than 15 years of experience in the security industry, from security consulting to in-house roles at major global companies in the tech & entertainment sector. A large part of her career has focused on the Middle East and Africa.

Do women in security face a glass ceiling? Hwee-Fong Yong is chair of the Women in Security group in Singapore, under the auspices of ASIS, and has over two decades of experience developing, planning and managing Safety and Security, Risk Management and Business Continuity protocols - most recently in a premises where she is responsible for the safety and security of over 11,000 employees. In this episode of Back to Source, she discusses the unique challenges and opportunities that women in the industry experience, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. She also explores her first role as a firefighter, and how the lessons learned in this physical security position informed her subsequent career in corporate security.

“Being with a humanitarian organization, crisis is almost bread-and-butter business for us,” says Priyanka Utham, regional safety and security director, MENA, with the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

After nearly 19 years as an intelligence analyst in the US Intelligence Community, much of it spent at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Nikki Rutman became Director of Global Intelligence at a multinational pharmaceutical company. Just before war broke out between Russia and Ukraine, Andrew Pratt had an alarming realization: The senior leadership in his organization, Siemens, was receiving intelligence from different departments, which was not always aligned.
