EP: 96 Fandom Is Where It Begins: Jason Leavy01 Oct 202600:58:28

Send us Fan Mail

Before the movie that scares you becomes the career you build, there's a VHS cover you couldn't walk past.

Jason Leavy grew up in a Staten Island house where movie night meant Freddy, Chucky, Gremlins, and a little green troublemaker with a pot of gold. Today he's the co-founder of Fuzz on the Lens Productions and a producer on Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3. He co-wrote, produced, and acted in STREAM, and he co-directed and produced Leprechaun Revenge, a love letter to the franchise he grew up on.

Jason and his brother Michael went from homemade shoots to a high school TV studio to helping build one of the biggest independent horror phenomena in years. We talk about the movies that built them, what it's like to watch a new horror icon emerge while you're standing on set, and what it means for two lifelong fans to bring back Ozzie Jones and the Leprechaun themselves.

And with Lionsgate now developing a brand-new Leprechaun film, the timing is hard to ignore. What does it feel like when the franchise you made a fan film for finally gets its own shot?

Because sometimes fandom isn't where the journey ends. It's where it begins.

Ep: 95 Rainbow Brite and Beyond: The Bettina Bush Story24 Sep 202601:11:53

Send us Fan Mail

She was Rainbow Brite. She was Lucy Little. She was Dotty Dog. And she was only twelve years old when one of those roles began with an improvised voice for a black-and-white sketch. Bettina Bush joins Back to Pop to look back on a career that shaped Saturday mornings, from her earliest days as a child actor, to the audition that became Rainbow Brite, to credits spanning The Littles, The Get Along Gang, My Little Pony, and beyond. With Rainbow Brite's 40th anniversary and a franchise revival underway, Bush reflects on what it's like to watch a character she created decades ago step into a new generation.

EP: 94 "Dishes Are Done, Man: The Keith Coogan Story"17 Sep 202600:54:49

Send us Fan Mail

You've seen Keith Coogan's face a hundred times, but you might not know his name. This week on Back to Pop, I sit down with the actor who voiced Young Tod in Disney's The Fox and the Hound, got left in charge in Adventures in Babysitting, fought for his country in Toy Soldiers, and delivered one of the most quotable lines of the '90s in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead ("The Dishes are done, man!"). Keith opens up about growing up as the grandson of Jackie Coogan, whose real-life legal battle against his own parents literally rewrote the law protecting child actors, and why he waited until 1986 to legally take the Coogan name as his own. It's a conversation about legacy, survival in Hollywood, and how his career quietly became a time capsule for an entire generation. Ep:93 Batdriven West: Karen Whitfield's Bronze Age Batgirl Story10 Sep 202601:02:23

Send us Fan Mail

From 1978 to 1984, Karen Whitfield toured alongside Adam West and Burt Ward as DC Comics' Bronze Age Batgirl — suiting up in the cape and cowl for audiences across America and getting a front-row seat to who Batman and Robin really were when the cameras stopped rolling.

She was 20 years old. She left Durham, North Carolina for California. And then, for nearly 35 years, she barely spoke of it.

In this episode, Karen opens up about the audition that changed her life, what it actually felt like wearing that costume, the real Adam West behind the dry humor, and why it took her decades to finally tell her story in the book Batdriven West.

This is a conversation about identity, legacy, and what it means to hang up the cape, and pick it back up again.

EP: 92 The Instrument You Can’t Hold: JP Karliak Goes Beyond the Voice03 Sep 202600:46:18

Send us Fan Mail

Morph. The Joker. Countless characters you’d recognize instantly, and a voice you’d never place a face to. This week, JP Karliak steps out from behind the mic to talk about what it actually means to become someone else for a living.

We go past the credits and into the craft: how JP prepares an instrument that isn’t a violin or a guitar, but himself, his voice, his body, his nervous system. He talks about stepping into Morph in X-Men ’97, carrying forward a character first brought to life in the early ’90s X-Men: The Animated Series, and about building a completely different kind of performance as the Joker in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

But this episode isn’t really about characters. It’s about creativity, fear, failure, and what success looks like once you’ve actually achieved it. JP also opens up about his work with Queer Vox and NerdsVote,  and what keeps him grounded when the mic is off.

All things JP can be found below.

Ep: 91 Silhouettes, Shadows & Legacy Characters — Mike Goguen on the Craft of Animation27 Aug 202601:19:19

Send us Fan Mail

Mike takes us behind the curtain on the creative process: how a character comes together, why silhouette and shape language matter more than people realize, and what it really means to inherit a character fans already love before you ever pick up a pencil.

We dig deep into three animated milestones that still command cult followings , Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, The Batman vs. Dracula, and Justice League: The New Frontier, talking about tone, atmosphere, and what it took to push animated storytelling into more cinematic territory. From there we travel through Eternia with He-Man, swing through the city with Spider-Man, and slow down for some comedy timing with Scooby-Doo and ALF (yes, there’s a story about a concerned grandmother).

Mike closes out his animation career on an Emmy-nominated note with Kung Fu Panda, and shares what a surprising new chapter,  acting, has taught him about performance from the other side of the frame.

If you grew up with these characters, this is a conversation about the people who shaped how you saw them.

EP: 90 “Finding Your Own Identity” with Kelly Slaughter20 Aug 202600:52:44

Send us Fan Mail

This week, Kelly Slaughter (aka “Slaughter Daughter”) joins Back to Pop for a raw, one-on-one conversation about discovering who you are when you grow up in someone else’s spotlight, and what it actually took to find her own.

We talk childhood behind the curtain, the identity crisis nobody warns you about, her fitness transformation, and why she’s now dedicated to helping other women find their strength, inside the gym and out.

This one’s less about the ring and more about the mirror.

EP: 89 Sugah, Politics, and Rogue: The Lenore Zann Story13 Aug 202600:58:35

Send us Fan Mail

Before streaming, before binge-watching, there was a voice you didn’t just recognize , you carried it with you. Beginning in 1992, Lenore Zann gave Rogue her unmistakable Southern charm, her strength, her vulnerability, and that unforgettable “sugah.” Decades later, she stepped back into the booth for X-Men ’97, introducing Rogue to a whole new generation.

But Lenore’s story goes far beyond Xavier’s mansion. She’s played Marilyn Monroe on stage, served in elected office fighting for environmental justice and mental health awareness, returned to genre television in Syfy’s Revival, and poured her extraordinary life into her memoir, A Rogue’s Tale.

In this episode, Lenore takes us from her earliest days on stage to the audition she almost didn’t take, the family atmosphere behind the original X-Men series, the complicated pull between Rogue and Gambit, and what it felt like coming back to a character who never really left her. We also dig into her path from voice actor to politician, the causes she carried into public office, and how it all connects to the woman fans have come to know as Rogue. EP: 88 Comics, Cartoons, and the Courage to Start Over a conversation w/ Chuck Patton 06 Aug 202601:21:19

Send us Fan Mail

In 1983, Chuck Patton became the first Black artist to draw Justice League of America, and helped build one of the most divisive, and now most re-examined, eras in the team’s history: Justice League Detroit.

This week on Back to Pop, Chuck takes us from a kid in Detroit who wanted nothing but to draw comics, through Dick Giordano’s New Talent workshop, the fan backlash over Vibe and Gypsy, and the napkin story behind his Titans work with Marv Wolfman,  all the way to the moment he walked away from comics entirely. He rebuilt a second career in animation, from Saturday morning staples like G.I. Joe to an Emmy for Spawn and one of his proudest credits, Dead Space: Downfall.

We also talk about his late collaborator Gerry Conway, the co-creator of Justice League Detroit, and what it means to watch a generation of readers reconsider work that was once torn apart on arrival. Ep: 87 Still Open: Comics Plus and the Man Who Never Left the Counter30 Jul 202601:33:10

Send us Fan Mail

Before the algorithm, there was a bell over the door.

For us over at Back To Pop, that door belonged to Comics Plus in Macon, Georgia — and the man behind the counter, David Roland, is still there.

This week, we sit down with David for a living-legacy conversation that pulls items out of a metaphorical time capsule: an old receipt from the shop’s earliest days, an ’80s comic with the price sticker still stuck on tight, a box of trading cards from the era when cards were “the gateway drug,” a foil-cover #1 from the wild speculation of the ’90s, and a pull list full of names who never missed a week.

Ep: 86 Daniel Dockery on the Batman Book Thirty Years in the Making23 Jul 202601:23:49

Send us Fan Mail

Kevin Conroy sat in a recording booth for thirty years playing a man who wore two faces,  and somewhere along the way, that dual identity became personal. Before he ever put on the cowl, Bruce Timm was just a burned-out animator tired of being told kids’ cartoons couldn’t be art. And a Warner Bros. executive gambled the whole look of Gotham City on painting black backgrounds onto cels instead of the other way around. None of it should have worked. All of it did.

This week, Daniel Dockery joins Back to Pop to talk about I Am the Night: The Ultimate Unauthorized History of Batman: The Animated Series (St. Martin’s Press, out September 1, 2026) — his deeply reported new book built on exclusive interviews with the writers, animators, and voice actors who turned a merchandising afterthought into the show many still call the best Batman has ever been on screen.

We go deep on the creative team,  Timm, Eric Radomski, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and the fights they had with the network over things as small as a recycling bin in the Batcave. We talk about Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, thirty years of partnership, and what it meant when Hamill said there wasn’t a Joker for him without his Batman. We get into Harley Quinn’s improbable survival past a single episode, the reinvention of Mr. Freeze in “Heart of Ice,” and why, unlike almost everything else from the ’90s, this show has never had its backlash moment.

Daniel Dockery is a Senior Staff Writer at Crunchyroll and the author of Monster Kids: How Pokémon Taught a Generation to Catch Them All. His new book hits shelves September 1, 2026.

I Am the Night is available for preorder now wherever books are sold.

Ep: 85 William McNamara: What Happened After the Credits And What's Happening 16 Jul 202601:19:12

Send us Fan Mail

William McNamara joins Back to Pop for an honest conversation about the life that unfolded beyond the movie screen.

Known for memorable performances in Dream a Little Dream, Surviving the Game, Copycat, Chasers, and numerous television appearances, William reflects on navigating fame, typecasting, addiction, sobriety, and eventually stepping away from Hollywood’s expectations.

He also opens up about the deeply personal inspiration behind The Trouble With Billy, his commitment to animal rescue and activism, and how life experience has changed the way he approaches acting, filmmaking, and storytelling.

This is more than a conversation about a career. It is a story of recovery, purpose, second chances, and finally taking ownership of your own narrative.

EP: 84 Lance Guest: From 🎃 Halloween 2, The Last Starfighter to Jaws: The Revenge09 Jul 202600:25:32

Every generation has a movie that finds them at exactly the right age. For a lot of us, that movie was The Last Starfighter — and at the center of it was Lance Guest, who turned Alex Rogan into one of the most quietly beloved heroes of ’80s sci-fi.

This week, Lance joins Back to Pop for a candid conversation spanning his career — from playing Jimmy opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween II, to stepping into the Brody family legacy in Jaws: The Revenge alongside Michael Caine and Mario Van Peebles, to his Broadway and Off-Broadway run as Johnny Cash in Million Dollar Quartet.

Ep: 83 Fearless Fred Kennedy on Comics, Broadcasting, and Making Stories That Refuse to Behave02 Jul 202600:55:30

Send us Fan Mail

Fred Kennedy — writer, broadcaster, and professional chaos agent known to most of the world as Fearless Fred- sits down with Back to Pop to talk about making comics that absolutely refuse to stay in one genre.

Fred is the writer behind Dead Romans, a six-issue historical epic from Image Comics' Shadowline that follows Arminius, a Germanic prince raised as a Roman hostage who used his military training to orchestrate one of the most devastating ambushes in ancient history,  the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, 9 AD. He’s also the writer of The Florida Hippopotamus Cocaine Massacre, a four-issue action-comedy from Mad Cave Studios that sold out its first printing before most people even knew what hit them. And he’s the creator, writer, and voice of Mud79,  a fully produced Star Wars audio drama that takes the galaxy far, far away and runs it straight through Platoon.

Fred grew up in Belgium surrounded by real Roman ruins, built a career in Canadian radio and television, and has spent the last several years making comics that swing from historically rigorous to completely unhinged — sometimes in the same sentence. We talk about where history obsession comes from, how broadcast timing shapes the way you write a page, what it means to collaborate with an artist versus just handing them a script, and why the ordinary people caught in the machine are almost always more interesting than the chosen ones.

Ep: 82 Adam Cahoon on Horror Fandom, LitRPG Monsters, and Vault Comics25 Jun 202600:58:41

Send us Fan Mail

This week on Back to Pop, we sit down with Adam Cahoon — artist, designer, and Senior Designer & former Production Lead at Vault Comics. Adam stepped into The Nasty, Vault’s horror-comedy about VHS culture and the “video nasties” moral panic in 1990s Scotland, taking over as sole interior artist from issue #3.

He’s also the designer behind the premium hardcover edition of He Who Fights With Monsters and the cover of The Two Week Curse (Book 1 of The Ten Realms), and the artist/co-creator of Greetings from the Maglev, a post-apocalyptic revenge story from Invader Comics.

We dig into what day to day, the invisible design choices that make a comic feel like an object instead of just printed pages, and how Adam built the “1950s title card” energy into the He Who Fights With Monsters typography. We also get into horror fandom, the challenge of stepping into a world someone else built, and the quiet, personal comics Adam’s been building on the side — superhero spas, cosmic consequences, and family mistakes.

In this episode:

•Designing The Nasty and taking over from original artist George Kambadais

•Inside the cover and hardcover design of He Who Fights With Monsters

•Building a cover for LitRPG/portal fantasy with The Two Week Curse

•Greetings from the Maglev and the pull of personal, self-owned work

•What makes a comic book logo actually work

This week on Back to Pop, we sit down with the artist behind that image — Nick Marinkovich, Canadian comic artist, illustrator, concept artist, and co-creator of Dead Romans (Image Comics Shadowline). Nick’s work carries grit, atmosphere, and cinematic weight — the kind of art that makes a panel feel like it has history behind it.

We talk about what makes a cover stop a reader cold, how a visual style gets built over years of sketchbooks and false starts, the discipline behind sequential storytelling, and what it really means to co-create a world from the ground up alongside a writer. Nick also opens up about process, pressure, deadlines, and the influences — comics and otherwise — that shaped how he sees light, composition, and motion.

If you’ve ever picked up a book purely because the cover wouldn’t let you put it down, this one’s for you.

EP: 80 From Plastic to Narco: Doug Wagner & Daniel Hillyard on Building Something Strange11 Jun 202601:14:30

Send us Fan Mail

Writer Doug Wagner returns to Back to Pop  and this time, he brings his artistic partner in crime with him.

Daniel Hillyard joins the conversation for a wide-ranging discussion on what it looks like when a creative partnership builds its own corner of the comics world, strange, violent, funny, and more emotionally honest than it has any right to be.

Together, they’ve made Plastic, Vinyl, Plush, and I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer. Now there’s Narco. And the work keeps getting bolder.

Marc, Doug, and Daniel dig into the DNA of their collaboration how they balance horror and humor, what makes a damaged character feel real inside an absurd premise, and why the strangest stories often carry the most human weight.

If you’ve been reading these books, this one’s for you. If you haven’t, this is a great place to start.

Ep: 78 Michael Tove: The Dream That Waited 28 May 202601:14:51

Send us Fan Mail

What happens when the dream doesn’t die — it just waits?

Michael Tove spent decades in North Carolina as a regional actor, film extra, and financial adviser. His first screen credit goes back to 1990, when he worked as an extra on the theatrical adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale — shot right in his home state. He carried a screenplay called Hot Ice for nearly thirty years. He never stopped.

Now, well past his 70th birthday, Tove is a debut screenwriter whose short film Yard Saleing — a Hitchcockian thriller about a yard sale, a locked box, and a decades-old jewelry heist — is making serious noise on the festival circuit. The film stars Eric Roberts and Eliza Roberts, and was directed by Tom Logan, veteran acting coach and former head of the acting department at the American Film Institute. Tove wrote it, and produced it.

There is no expiration date on your dreams. Michael Tove is living proof. If you would like to see Yard Sailing watch it here https://youtu.be/QTNAGtQSWm4

EP: 77 George Vega: The Kid Who Never Stopped Drawing21 May 202601:30:13

Send us Fan Mail

George Vega grew up in Newark, New Jersey watching Voltron and filling sketchbooks with Jim Lee panels. Today he’s doing G.I. Joe cover work through Skybound and his art has appeared across Marvel, DC, Alien, Firefly, and Rick and Morty. In this conversation, George talks about the artists who shaped him — Jim Lee, Brom, Todd McFarlane, Larry Elmore — and what he actually took from each of them. We get into his process, his discipline philosophy, what it means to capture what makes a character unique, and why showing up anyway is the only real answer to artist’s block. If you grew up on trading cards, action figures, and Saturday morning cartoons, this one hits different.

EP: 76. JP Mavinga: Drawing Worlds, Building Heroes, and the Art Behind White Sky14 May 202601:22:47

Send us Fan Mail

JP Mavinga has spent over twenty-five years building one of the most distinctive careers in illustration and comics — born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, trained at SCAD, and forged across three continents before landing as a senior concept designer and art director at Sideshow Collectibles, where his work on the Thanos on Throne maquette set sales records.
In this episode, JP joins Back to Pop to talk craft, identity, and his debut Image Comics series White Sky written by William Harms, colored by Lee Loughridge, and already on its third printing.

The conversation covers his multicultural journey and how it shaped his visual voice, his years designing iconic collector pieces for DC, Marvel, and beyond, and the process behind building every page of White Sky  a post-apocalyptic survival story about a father and daughter crossing a haunted America. JP also gets into the tools he uses, how he draws emotion without dialogue, and what twenty-five years in this industry has taught him about staying in it.

Ep: 75 Rick Burchett — The Artist Who Made Batman Move07 May 202601:08:47

Send us Fan Mail

If you grew up reading The Batman Adventures, Batman: Gotham Adventures, or Superman Adventures, Rick Burchett’s work shaped how you see those characters.

His pages don’t just look good — they move, they breathe, they act.
In this episode, we sit down with Rick to talk about how a commercial art background at a St. Louis ad agency quietly became one of the best training grounds for comics storytelling, why the animated Batman books weren’t just tie-ins but a genuine artistic statement, and what it actually takes to sustain a career in comics across decades without losing your voice.

Rick breaks down what he’s really chasing when he builds a page, how he shifted gears between Batman’s tension and Superman’s optimism without losing himself, and why clarity and restraint — not flash — are the rarest skills in the medium.
This one’s for the fans who wore out those pages. And for anyone who ever wondered what makes a comic actually work.

Ep: 74 Dancing Between the Raindrops with Nelson Aspen16 Apr 202601:09:20

Send us Fan Mail

He’s covered the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and decades of Hollywood from the red carpet out. Now Nelson Aspen is turning the lens on himself.

Nelson joins Back to Pop to talk about Dancing Between the Raindrops: Happily Ever After? — the final chapter in his trilogy blending romance, identity, and the unfiltered realities behind the spotlight.

It’s a book that feels lived-in, because it is.
We dig into reinvention in middle age, the tension between wanting intimacy and settling for availability, what it means to start over in New York City, and whether “happily ever after” is something we’re taught — or something we have to redefine on our own terms.

This one goes deep. And it earns it.

EP: 73  “Bob Budiansky on Building the Original Transformers Mythology”09 Apr 202601:22:32

Send us Fan Mail

He named 200 characters like Megatron, Starscream, Grimlock, Bumblebee, Prowl, and more . He wrote the character bibles that turned a line of Japanese toys into one of the most beloved franchises in pop culture history — and most people have never heard his name.

Bob Budiansky spent 20 years at Marvel Comics as an editor, writer, and penciller. He drew Ghost Rider covers for five years, co-plotted the conclusion of the original Johnny Blaze run, and wrote The Transformers from issue #5 through #55 — crafting the personalities, the mythology, and the names behind roughly 250 characters over six years.

Then he walked away from licensed properties and built something entirely his own: Sleepwalker, a wildly original Marvel series about an otherworldly guardian who battles nightmares bleeding into the real world — which he wrote for all 33 issues.

In this conversation, Bob takes us behind the curtain on all of it: how the Transformers assignment landed on his desk over Thanksgiving with a week’s deadline, what it felt like to realize he was building the foundation of a global franchise, and why he didn’t fully grasp what he’d created until he googled his own name in the 90s.

This one’s for every kid who ever picked up a Transformer and wondered where it came from.

EP: 72 Jeremy Robinson: Blood, Butterflies, and Building an Empire02 Apr 202600:52:58

Send us Fan Mail

Jeremy Robinson has written nearly 100 novels. He’s a #1 Audible and New York Times bestselling author published in 14 languages. His kaiju series Project Nemesis is in development at Sony Pictures Television with John Wick director Chad Stahelski. And now he’s back where he started — in comics.
But he’s not adapting his novels.

He’s creating something new.
Nectar, the debut title from Robinson’s own Breakneck Comics imprint at Vault Comics, is a 19th-century gothic folk horror story set in 1837 on Misery Island — a cold, isolated stretch of land off the coast of Salem, Massachusetts. Its monster: blood-drinking butterflies carrying the Dancing Plague. The goal was to build something that could stand alongside Dracula and Frankenstein. From the early reviews, they may have pulled it off.

In this episode, Jeremy Robinson traces the full arc — from Beverly, Massachusetts kid raised on science fiction and seacoast exploration, to comic book illustrator, to screenwriter, to genre fiction empire builder. We talk about the leap from drawing panels to filling them with story, the architecture of a shared universe, what it means to run your own imprint, and how an idea that arrived in minutes with his wife Hilaree became the horror comic readers are already hunting on the secondary market.

This is the origin story. And the monster story. And the business story.
Let’s go.

Ep: 71 Comics, Games, and the End of Everything: William Harms26 Mar 202601:04:44

Send us Fan Mail

William Harms has spent thirty years building worlds — and the dead ones are his best work yet.

From small press comics in the early ‘90s to writing Captain America and Wolverine for Marvel, to crafting the entire story of inFAMOUS for PlayStation 3 (IGN’s Best Story of the Year, 2009), to serving as Narrative Director on Mafia III — a BAFTA-nominated game that ended up in a Victoria and Albert Museum exhibit — William Harms has done it all.

And now he’s back in creator-owned comics with White Sky, his haunting new post-apocalyptic series from Image Comics about a father and daughter fleeing across a world completely ruled by ghosts.
Issue one sold out at the distributor level on release day. The second printing has already topped 30,000 orders

.
In this episode, we go deep on the personal thread running through thirty years of horror, games, and comics — how William wrote the moral complexity of Mafia III, what makes ghost stories different from every other kind of horror, and why White Sky isn’t just a story about the end of the world. It’s a story about what you hold onto when everything is gone.
White Sky #1 and #2 are available now from Image Comics.

Ep: 70 Marc Singer: Before the Loincloth, Beyond the Legend19 Mar 202600:57:26

Send us Fan Mail

Before streaming. Before shared universes. Before fandom went mainstream — there were heroes who meant it.

This week on Back to Pop, we give Marc Singer’s career the full treatment it deserves. He was a classically trained stage actor before any of this happened on a screen — playing Petruchio in A.C.T.’s landmark 1976 Taming of the Shrew for PBS, Christian in Cyrano de Bergerac opposite Peter Donat and Marsha Mason. His film debut was opposite Burt Lancaster in Go Tell the Spartans, one of the sharpest Vietnam War films ever made. His 1982 alone contained two completely different performances: the stoic, compassionate Dar in The Beastmaster and the funny, chaotic Tom Sullivan in If You Could See What I Hear.

Then came V — not just science fiction spectacle, but a documented Nazi allegory adapted from Sinclair Lewis, with Singer’s Mike Donovan as the TV news cameraman who sneaks aboard an alien mothership, films the truth, and refuses to look away.

We trace the full arc: the Singer family musical dynasty that explains everything, the cable TV revolution that turned The Beastmaster into a generational touchstone, the voice of Man-Bat in what many consider the greatest animated series ever made, and Singer’s late-career villain turn in Arrow — a general who unleashes a bioweapon on Hong Kong and calls it patriotism.

Hero. Monster. Villain. Shakespearean. The man brought his full instrument to every room — and because he did, these stories became something people carry for decades.

Start with The Beastmaster. Chase it with the original V. Then find the 1976 Taming of the Shrew on YouTube — and you’ll understand everything.

Ep: 69 Into the Sweetest Darkness: Doug Wagner12 Mar 202601:02:19

Send us Fan Mail

Today, on Back To Pop we dive into the pages of comics, with acclaimed writer Doug Wagner

Doug Wagner writes serial killers in love, cannibal furries, fashion designers with a taste for human flesh, and Viking curses — and somehow, every single one lands with genuine heart. This week, Marc sits down with the creator of Plastic, Vinyl, Plush, I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer, and the upcoming Narco to find out how he makes the darkest material feel weirdly, disarmingly human.

They dig into Wagner’s long road in — seven years, 200+ rejection letters, a brief window at Malibu Comics that collapsed just two months after he was hired, and nine more years clawing back from that. They talk about the anthology crime roots that built his storytelling instincts, his creative partnership with artist Daniel Hillyard, and the tonal tightrope he walks in every book: horror, comedy, and sincerity, all at once.

Plus: the Hitchcock influences behind Narco, why his protagonists always feel like outsiders reaching for something just out of grasp, and what that kid who learned to read through comics would think of what he’s built.
Start with Plastic. Then spiral in beautifully from there.

EP: 68 Highburn Studios: The Business, the Books, and the Grind of Indie Comics05 Mar 202601:00:50

Send us Fan Mail

Michael Watkins (CEO/Editor-in-Chief, Highburn Studios) is back — and this time he brought the whole crew. Joining him are Lyle Pollard, creator of the slice-of-life series Tribulations, and Mike “Mez” Phillips, freelance artist and creator behind No More and the upcoming Hemlock.

Over the course of an hour, we get into what Highburn actually looks like from the inside in 2026, the challenges of running a creator-owned studio, and what it means to be both a working artist and a publisher at the same time.

We break down each of their books — the new second-generation arc in Guardians, what makes Tribulations feel so specific and human, and how Mez is juggling two creator-owned projects alongside freelance work and teaching art.

We also get into the messy, honest stuff: page 87 burnout, pricing and print costs, what marketing actually works (versus what sounds good on a panel), and what to do if you just finished book one and have no idea what comes next.

This one’s for the readers, the makers, and everyone somewhere in between.

Ep: 67 Hal Eisner Didn’t Plan Any of It — That’s What Made Him Great26 Feb 202601:00:42

He covered the O.J. Simpson trial, the Rodney King riots, the Northridge earthquake, Columbine, the Las Vegas mass shooting, and Michael Jackson’s death. For 58 years, Hal Eisner was there — camera rolling, microphone in hand — for the moments that defined Los Angeles and shook the nation.
But here’s what makes his story different: he never planned any of it.
In this episode, the legendary FOX 11 and KCOP reporter joins us to talk about his new memoir, An Accidental Career: My Fifty-Eight-Year Adventure as a Broadcast News Reporter — and the conversation goes everywhere.

From accidentally reporting false information live on air to getting knocked unconscious by the Northridge earthquake. From intimate moments with Dick Van Dyke and George Clooney to being struck by a drunk driver on Hollywood Boulevard in the middle of a live shoot.

From launching a mentorship camp that accidentally played matchmaker — to retiring on the exact anniversary of the day he started, only to watch LA burn from a cruise ship days later.
Hal Eisner is funny, sharp, honest, and deeply human. This one will stay with you.

Ep: 66 On the Line: Breaking Barriers, Battling Cancer, and Rewriting the Rockettes Story19 Feb 202601:11:28

Send us Fan Mail

People know the kicks. The costumes. The Christmas magic.

But they don’t always know what it cost to stand on that line — and what it takes to stay whole after you do.

This week on Back to Pop, we sit down with Jennifer Jones — history-maker, dancer, author, and survivor — who became the first Black Rockette at Radio City Music Hall in 1987. What followed wasn’t just applause. It was pressure, resistance, representation, and a level of scrutiny few could imagine.

Jennifer opens up about:

• The audition room where courage mattered as much as choreography

• Becoming “the first” in an institution built on uniformity

• Hate mail, historic milestones, and finding out through the news

• Performing at Super Bowl XXII and on Broadway in 42nd Street

• The physical reality behind “precision”

• And surviving stage III colon cancer — and choosing to live differently afterward

We talk about her children’s book On the Line, her powerful memoir pulling back the velvet curtain, and what legacy really means when your body, your art, and your identity have all been tested.

This isn’t just a story about breaking barriers.

It’s about what happens after you do.

Jennifer is also being honored in the All-Star History Exhibit on February 19 and recognized at the Museum of Broadway on February 22 — and we discuss what those milestones mean in the context of her full journey.

If you’ve ever stood in a room wondering whether you belong — this conversation is for you.

EP: 61 A Conversation w/ Keith Williams: The Line Between Art and Story15 Jan 202601:06:34

Send us Fan Mail

Every line in a comic tells a story. Some shout. Others whisper.
Today on Back to Pop, we’re sitting down with Keith Williams — an inker who’s defined the look of Superman, The Phantom, and so many heroes we grew up with. This isn’t just a career retrospective. It’s a conversation about craft, rhythm, and what it means to tell stories one line at a time.

From a childhood moment with Batman #184 to over a decade drawing The Phantom, from Marvel’s legendary bullpen under John Romita Sr. to redefining Superman alongside John Byrne, Keith takes us behind the ink to reveal what makes a line feel alive.

We explore:
∙How a single comic from his grandmother changed everything
∙What it means to learn the trade in Marvel’s bullpen
∙The difference between tracing and storytelling with ink
∙The unique challenge of daily adventure strips
∙Why rhythm and restraint define great comic art
∙What this generation of artists left behind for the next
This is what comic history looks like when it’s drawn by hand — one confident, intentional stroke at a time.
New episodes of Back to Pop drop every Thursday at 6 AM Eastern.

EP: 60 Ink with Breath in It: A Conversation w/ Afua Richardson on Myth, Memory & the Feminine Creative08 Jan 202601:20:28

Send us Fan Mail

What happens when a classically trained flutist who beatboxed with Parliament-Funkadelic picks up a pen and starts drawing worlds? You get Afua Richardson — musician, illustrator, mythmaker, and cultural architect whose work refuses to stay inside the lines.
In this soul-stirring 60-minute conversation, we trace Afua’s journey from Carnegie Hall at eleven to the panels of Marvel’s Black Panther: World of Wakanda, where she wove Adinkra symbols and ancestral memory into every frame. We talk about her alter ego “Docta Foo,” the power of self-taught artistry in gatekept spaces, and why mermaids aren’t just fantasy — they’re spiritual revolution.
This isn’t your typical artist interview. We’re going deep into the waters of feminine imagination, cultural reclamation, and what it means to create mirrors so people can see they already belong. Afua shares why her current project Aquarius: The Book of Merr demands a soundtrack, how anger became calm through alter egos (featuring the Bo Jackson story you’ve never heard), and what the ancestors whisper when you’re drawing love between Black women.
We explore:
∙Music as first language, art as second sight
∙Building your own door when gatekeepers won’t open theirs
∙Translating feminine strength into visual mythology
∙Water as emotional weight, softness as revolutionary act
∙The difference between prayer, protest, and play in creative work
For the young artist with a sketchbook who’s been told their stories are “too much,” for anyone who’s ever felt like they’re dancing between disciplines rather than choosing one, for souls who understand that myth isn’t escape but reimagining — this one’s for you.

She was a five-time World Karate Champion before the world even knew her name. Then Hong Kong discovered her, and Hollywood spent the next three decades trying to keep up.

In this career-spanning deep dive, Cynthia joins Back to Pop to reveal how a 13-year-old girl from Pennsylvania became a global icon.

Inside the Episode:

• The Leap of Faith: Stepping onto a plane to Hong Kong in 1984 with no acting experience and zero Cantonese.

EP: 58 A Christmas Special in Gotham: Mask of the Phantasm (The Story Behind the Shadows)25 Dec 202501:10:55

Send us Fan Mail

In December of 1993, a small team of artists was handed an impossible assignment: take a direct-to-video project, pivot to a theatrical film, and deliver it in just eight months.

It should’ve been a disaster.

Instead, it became the gold standard.

This week on Back To Pop, we’re celebrating Batman: Mask of the Phantasm—a noir tragedy wrapped in a mystery, draped in Art Deco shadows that still haven’t faded. Decades later, fans don’t just call it a great animated film… many call it the most definitive Batman story ever put on screen.

And today, we’re joined by the architects who built it:

Alan Burnett (writer), Kevin Altieri (director), and Brad Rader (artist/storyboard).

We go deep on:

  • The theatrical pivot: shifting from DTV to widescreen filmmaking under insane deadlines
  • The graveyard sequence: crafting grief and guilt before a single line is spoken
  • Andrea Beaumont’s “Bacall energy”: elegance, danger, and timing that sells the heartbreak
  • Phantasm vs. Joker: silent mythic terror colliding with chaotic noir violence
  • The World’s Fair finale: spectacle, storyboarding collaboration, and that haunting final image

By the end, we’re left with the question that still stings: did Batman win… or did Bruce lose everything?

Merry Christmas, Gotham. Go back to the graveyard. Go back to the World’s Fair. And go rewatch the masterpiece.

🎧 Listen now and celebrate Mask of the Phantasm with us.

EP: 57 The Man Behind the Myth: Jason Paige (Pokémon, Michael Jackson, & The Art of the Jingle)18 Dec 202500:53:17

Send us Fan Mail

You’ve heard this voice a hundred times… but chances are, you’ve never heard him.

Jason Paige is the voice of the original Pokémon anthem—a song that defined a global generation. But that’s just the cover. Peel it back, and you find a working artist with an astonishing body of work that you've probably never connected to his name.

From singing background for Michael Jackson to creating the earworm responsible for curing your heartburn ("Nausea, heartburn, indigestion..."), Jason has been the invisible soundtrack to your life for decades.

In this episode, we sit down to talk about the man behind the voice. We strip away the nostalgia to discuss the "invisible work" of a session singer, the pressure of carrying a cultural legacy, and what happens when your voice becomes more famous than your name.

In this episode, we cover:

• The Origin Story: How Jason realized his voice was a tool, not just a talent.

• The Pokémon Phenomenon: The true story behind that 4-hour recording session and how he handles the weight of a billion childhood memories.

• The Commercial King: How to approach a Pepto Bismol jingle with the same artistic integrity as a pop ballad.

• The Legend: What it was really like to stand in the orbit of Michael Jackson.

⏳ Episode Chapters:

• (02:00) The Seed: First notes and realizing the power of the voice.

• (17:00) The Peel: The truth behind the Pokémon theme song session.

• (35:00) The Juice: The invisible work (Pepto Bismol, Mountain Dew, and MJ).

Ep: 55 A Love Letter To Saturday Morning 04 Dec 202501:18:07

Send us Fan Mail

The Architect of Childhood - Margaret Loesch on  Saturday Mornings , X-Men, Power Rangers, and the Fox Kids Revolution

Margaret Loesch didn’t just give us shows. She gave us identity.

Before the MCU, before the streaming wars, Margaret Loesch was the driving force behind the greatest Saturday Morning and syndicated children's programming of the 1980s and 1990s.

As the President of Marvel Productions (Dungeons & Dragons, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Jem) and under her leadership at Fox Kids came (X-Men: The Animated Series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), her non-negotiable vision was to give kids serialized, emotional, and complex stories.

In this powerful, feature-length conversation, Margaret walks us through her entire career:

• The Origin Story: Her early years at ABC/NBC and what she learned about the potential of children's programming.

• The Dream Factory: Pushing for deeper narratives at Hanna-Barbera.

• The Marvel Years: Why she believed kids were ready for the deeper stories and the tragedy of Optimus Prime’s death in The Transformers: The Movie.

• Her Thoughts on Pryde Of The X-Men

• The Revolution: Building Fox Kids from the ground up, fighting for X-Men '92 (tackling prejudice, trauma, and identity), and the biggest gamble that paid off: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

• A Love Letter: What she wants the millions of adults who grew up on her worlds to know today.

This is an essential history lesson, a vibrant homage, and a deeply moving thank you to the woman who shaped millions of imaginations.

EP: 48 A Conversation w/ Mike Vosburg: From Underground Comics to Emmy Gold16 Oct 202501:08:48

# Mike Vosburg: From Underground Comics to Emmy Gold

What happens when a 15-year-old comic fanboy launches his own fanzine and never stops creating? You get Mike Vosburg—a legendary artist whose pen has shaped everything from underground comics and Marvel’s GI Joe to HBO’s iconic Tales from the Crypt and Emmy-winning animation.

In this episode, we trace Mike’s extraordinary journey through five decades of pop culture. Starting with his DIY fanzine Masquerader in 1962, Mike rode the wave of underground comics in the ’70s before breaking into mainstream Marvel with GI Joe: A Real American Hero, where he both penciled classic issues and storyboarded for the animated series.

But Mike’s most haunting legacy might be his work on Tales from the Crypt, where he illustrated 92 of the 93 covers and storyboarded the show’s wraparound sequences, bringing EC Comics’ horror tradition to a new generation. His talent for visual storytelling earned him an Emmy for directing HBO’s Spawn series, proving he could master both the page and the screen.

We also explore his feminist fantasy epic Sisterhood of Steel, his storyboard work on iconic music videos like Eminem’s “Stan” and Eve’s “Let Me Blow Ya Mind,” and what it takes to build a career that seamlessly moves between comics, television, animation, and film.

**In This Episode:**

- Launching a fanzine at 15 and breaking into underground comics
- Inside Marvel’s GI Joe empire: penciling and storyboarding
- Creating 92 spine-chilling covers for Tales from the Crypt
- Winning an Emmy for directing Spawn
- Storyboarding hip-hop’s most memorable music videos
- The story behind Sisterhood of Steel and taking control of publishing
- Hard-earned lessons on visual storytelling across mediums

Whether you grew up reading GI Joe, got nightmares from the Crypt Keeper, or marvel at the craft behind your favorite music videos, Mike Vosburg’s story is a masterclass in creative versatility and artistic longevity.
