Another weekend down and a new race in the books. We were at the Summer Sizzle 15k. Yes, a 15k. We're going to break the race down. Then we are going to tackle a listener requested topic. We'll talk about races and how we pick them. How do you pick the races you run. Sometimes it's a no brainer, but sometimes it can actually be due to a number of factors. Let's discuss! 

We were falling a little behind on race reviews, so we are getting caught up today! We've had three great races all in a row. Let's talk about them. We ran the Run to Bless 5k, Rexy Run 5k, and Hearts for RMHC 10k recently. We got to see most of you there! Let's break them down and then look at what's coming up for all of us race addicts! 

It was a double dip, double hot, double humid, double hilly, double half marathon weekend! We went back to back with the Clinton Historic Half Marathon and the Hometown Half Marathon. Both were some tough courses. The head didn't help matters much either. We will talk about them both in depth in this weeks episode. Come on in for this warm and fuzzy edition!

The running world is often divided into two. The front of the pack and the back of the pack. More often than not, we get along famously. There is usually nothing but love for each other at all the races. Sometimes though, you get an article released blasting those of us in the back. These articles don't sit well with me. Let's talk about the front of the pack vs the back of the pack. Let's go ahead and blow away the notion that one is better than the other. Because ultimately we are all runners.

It was a huge week in the world of the BIG races. Ballot updates were available for London, New York, and Big Sir. Information about the next Boston Marathon came hot and heavy as well. We'll update you on when and how to register for these events. We will also get caught up on some of the local races we have been at. You'll get a story and some incoherent host ramblings.

This week we wanted to address a listener requested topic. We are going to do Memorable Races! In this episode I cover all the Full marathons I've done. Some were great and some were awful! Every race is a unique experience. We can only imagine all the different marathon tales out there! I'd love to hear them, but for now, here's mine.

Injuries happen to us all. They stink. When they cost you your Fall Marathon though.....That's when it gets really bad! The unfortunate truth is that injuries will affect us all. We have to be smart and not stubborn. Let's talk about race deferrals and injuries. Let's talk about being smart and coming back stronger. We stubborn runners need reminding sometimes that we need to shut it down so we can live to run another day!

Join us for another Beyond the Finish Line Episode! This week we welcome in Erica and Kristina from Baby Jay's Legacy of Hope. A group in Lawrence Kansas is doing all they can to help the families of children who are currently undergoing cancer treatment. Baby Jay's was set up in honor of Jayden who received her Angel wings at the age of five after a two-year battle against cancer. We want to raise awareness, which as you'll hear, is a much-needed tool in this fight against childhood cancer.

It's time to tell the tale. On the sixth anniversary of my open heart procedure, let's talk about how things went down for me. As rough as it was, it's still a story of triumph. We all have setbacks. Some worse than others, but we all have them. How do you respond to them? Let's talk about the things that knock us down and how we get back up!

We are so fortunate to be joined this week by the Race Director for the Garmin Kansas City Marathon! Dave Borchardt is here to talk about the race, being a race director, the Boston Marathon, and even some World Cup Soccer coming to Kansas City! Dave has had his finger on the pulse of Kansas City sports for a long time, and he's here to talk to us about it all. Join us for this great interview with an excellent guest!

Another race weekend is in the books. A first for the podcast as we had a table at the Gardner PD Law Dog 5k/10k. We got to meet new people and even sold a shirt! Exciting times! The Back of the Packettes ran their first 10k at this race. Both placed first in their age divisions. This made us think a bit about kids and running. When is too early? What is too much? When should you back off? These are all questions to answer. Join us for this and a very special announcement for next week's show!

A two-race weekend is in the books. It was HOT out there. The best part of long runs is letting your mind wander though. Mine went to the lessons running teaches us. I found some info from a fellow runner to share and then I wanted to give my opinion on my running lessons as it relates to the Fourth of July. Summer just began. We are entering the hottest part of the year. What does that mean? Fall training programs have begun! Yes! It's hot, but the cooler days and long races are just 12 - 16 weeks away. Let's talk about the importance of training plans when it comes to our long runs. The training, the nutrition, and the mental challenges that all come together to effect our runs. It's time to ramp up the miles along with the heat. All for Fall Glory!

Happy Fathers Day everyone! It was a two-race weekend for the Back of the Pack Podcast. Two races and it isn't exactly cool outside. Fun right? No? Let's take a closer look at Fun! Seems a fun topic. Did you know there are multiple levels of fun? Well, you do now! Come listen as we talk races and fun all at the same time!

We welcome two special guests to the show this week. Deliece and William join us to talk about Braden's Hope for Childhood Cancer. A non-profit in Kansas City raising funds for childhood cancer research. Childhood Cancer research is grossly underfunded. More awareness needs to be raised. They host the Hope on the Hill 5k/10k in September. We want to give them a platform to get the word out, and we want EVERYONE to register for this race!

After a few years away, we make our triumphant return to Hospital Hill. Voted one of the most difficult races in the area and in the country, this half marathon is not for the faint of heart. It lives up to its name as "Hospital Hill" After the hills, you might need that hospital! We'll discuss the race and how we back of the pack folk can push through something so hard all the way to the finish line!

Join us for this special episode. We welcome our show's first guest, Libby Davis from the Fighting Fentanyl 5k. Libby shares her story as to why this race is so much more than just a race. There is an epidemic happening right under our noses and the best way to combat it is through awareness. Join us as we talk about Fentanyl and the opioid epidemic in this country.

Is "Hitting the Wall" a real thing? You bet it is! It can happen to all of us and believe it or not, there is actual physical science behind it! So it is going to happen. How do we cope with it when it does? There are a few ways to look at it, so join us as we talk about the dreaded wall and how to handle it when we go splat!

Running with the Cows is in the books. Mother Nature sure had her say in how this race went down. Mistakes were made and a horrible race for Kyle was run. We get a little raw in this episode. If you can't learn from your mistakes though, you are doomed to repeat them!

Mother Nature is done with Spring! Here in our area, the heat is on its way! Let's break down this warm weather running stuff. If we aren't careful, the heat can derail our runs, training, and races before we even knew what hit us! Preparation is key, so let's discuss what it is to run in the heat!

If you are a runner with any races under your belt, then you've had that "bad race". The race where nothing goes right. You're off, the race is off, your finish is bad, just throw your running shoes away! We've been there. There is a way back though! Let's talk about the bad race and see how we move on from one. They happen, but they do not defeat us! We learn and Grow, so Let's GO!

Two Races. One Weekend. Glutton for punishment? Maybe! This weekend we found ourselves out at not one but two 5k's. We'll talk about the Accept Zero 5k and Noah's Bandage Project. We will also discuss how you do two runs in a weekend. Can you just go out there and do it? Sure, but you better be ready for it! Listen in and get the tips you need to run that split day 10k!

It's a special Patriots Day episode of Back of the Pack! The Boston Marathon just finished up. Winners are crowned. The women's race came down to the wire! Those runners were rockin and rolling out there! That leads us to today. We cover a listener-requested topic in this week's episode and to cover that, we need to jam! The Fargo Marathon is now in the rearview mirror! We had a wonderful weekend up in North Dakota. This was full marathon number thirteen for the podcast. It was a great weekend of friends and running! Listen in as we talk all about the 2024 Fargo Marathon, Mark Knutson 5k, and the Go Far Challenge.

Another half marathon in the books! The second half marathon of this young running season. While the result was decent, there were mistakes made. Race day mistakes are something we all make. We may not even know we're doing them, and we do them anyway. Let's talk about this second half marathon of the year and then all the dumb things we do on race day. We're a week out from the next half marathon. What do you even do a week before a race. You can't run, but you can't eat. The week before is just the strangest time before a race. We'll talk about how to handle that. Upcoming races, and some really fun future plans! Join us!

We are ready for another year of Running with the Cows! The half marathon held in Bucyrus, KS is a historically tough race that was can never say NO to! We'll talk about the race, continue on with our Mental Health talk for the month of May, and end with a t-shirt update. Join in for all the Fun. Mooooove it along!

We're back from another road trip. This week we were in Lincon Nebraska for the Lincoln Half Marathon. An excellent course on an excellent weekend! A good time was had by all. We will break down the race and also dive a little bit into the Month of May. May is mental health awareness month. Good Mental Health and running go hand in hand. Let's talk about it!

For the second year in a row, we had a great weekend in Topeka, KS at the Top City Half Marathon! In this episode we talk all about the race. We will also touch on some injury issues as well as an update on the London Marathon that you might find a little surprising! Congrats to all the Top City finishers. That race was no joke in 2024!

Another weekend down in the busy Spring running season of 2024. The Garmin Land of Oz Half Marathon is in the books. Another beautiful morning for running! We'll talk a little about the race, then let's dive into some of our mental issues as we continue on in this Spring running season. By now we've had good races and bad races. We can't let the downs outnumber the ups! Let's talk about being our best motivators. Our best cheerleaders!

We are back from South Carolina! The 2slow4Boston Marathon is in the books. We had a fantastic weekend on the road covering this race! Tune in and hear all about it. The Liberty Half is always the big start to the running season and this year we had a little help in all of us getting across that finish line. We did it for Scott. Our last "easy" weekend for the next few months is behind us. Sprint running season escalates quickly now! We have the Liberty Half Marathon on the horizon and many, MANY more long distance races coming up after that. Let's look at where we are going and also be mindful of what can meet us along the way. You can run too much! Let's see what that looks like before we lace up the shows for another run.

Sometimes you can go from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the barrell. While the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bow, the running word lost one of the absolute best to lace up the shoes.
