The Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-Being and Success with Marc Brackett18 Nov 202100:57:08

For the past 25 years Marc Brackett, Ph.D has been researching and writing about emotions and running around the world talking to people about their feelings.

Marc Brackett, Ph.D., is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University.

“Our emotional state is one of the most important aspects of our lives. It rules everything else. Its influence is pervasive. Yet it is also the thing we steer around most carefully. Our inner lives are uncharted territory even to us, a risky place to explore.

Our lives are saturated with emotions-sadness, disappointment, anxiety, irritation, enthusiasm and even tranquility. Sometimes-often-those feelings are inconvenient.

The irony, though, is when we ignore our feelings, or suppress them, they only become stronger. "

Key poiints:

  • Why emotions matter? (5 key areas)
  • The differnce between emotions and feelings
  • Incidental feelings vs integral
  • Charecterisitics of an emotion scientisit
  • The RULER
  • What's a Mood Meter

Buddhism Meets Psychotherapy on the Path of Liberation05 Nov 202101:15:25

The core struggle for most of us is we want things to be different than they are. How can we free ourselves from unnecessary suffering and experience freedom that is already present in our lives.

Ask yourself, what am I feeling right now that I don’t want to feel? And is that a problem?

Often we look outside ourselves either for problems or solutions. Couples blame one another-you should change so that I won’t feel disturbed. By placing the cause of our disturbance outside of ourselves they miss the opportunity to develop a capacity to deal with our own disturbance.

What is our tendency? We avoid feeling discomfort. We get wrapped up in stories and interpretations. Our normal way of operating is to relate to our embodied sensation from the perspective of our interpretations.

According to my guest-Bruce Tift, the author of Already Free, the more we stay embodied with our moment to moment experience, the more confidence we have that we can work with whatever arises.

The Voice in Your Head and How To Harness It21 Oct 202100:59:16

We all have an inner voice and how it manifests differs from person to person.

How well do you know your inner voice?

Rather than silencing the negative self-talk-the chatter, we need to learn how to harness it. This is the central question of my guest’s brand new book Chatter: The Voice In Our Head, Why It Matters and How To Harness It.

Ethan Kross, Ph.D  is an award-winning professor and bestselling author in the University of Michigan’s top ranked Psychology Department and its Ross School of Business. He has participated in policy discussion at the White House and has been interviewed on CBS Evening News, Good Morning America, and NPR’s Morning Edition. His pioneering research has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Harvard Business Review, USA Today, The Economist, The Atlantic, Forbes, and Time.

In this interview Ethan reveals the hidden power of our inner voice and shows how we can harness it to live a healthier, more satisfying and more productive life.

The good news is we are already equipped with the tools we need to make our inner voice work in our favor. Yes, that inner critic can become your inner coach.

Key points:

  • When do we first become aware of our inner voice?
  • How does harmful mental chatter influence people’s emotional health and physical health?
  • Does venting emotions reduce harmful mental chatter?
  • And so much more

Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness08 Oct 202101:16:45

There are so many therapeutic methods and healing modalities available these days.

One of them is IFS, or parts work.

I have the honor of  speaking with the creator of IFS, Dr. Rick Schwartz.

He's the creator of Internal Family Systems, IFS, a highly effective evidence-based therapeutic model. It provides a non-pathologizing, optimistic, and empowering perspective and a

practical and effective set of techniques for working with individuals, couples, families, and more recently, corporations and classrooms.

In this episode we talked about:

  • The myth of the mono mind
  • The goal and the 4 main benefits of IFS
  • It’s origin, growth and milestones
  • Then Dr. Schwartz describes the parts and their roles
  • We do a live demo

We all have different parts. Think of an inner critic, for example, as one part. They all serve a purpose, even the most destructive ones have protective intentions.

Parts are often frozen in past traumas when their extreme rules are needed

When they trust it's safe to step out of their roles, they are highly valuable to the system.

Alarmed Aloneness30 Sep 202100:58:24

Did you know that when we name our feelings the activity in the amygdala decreases? My guest Sarah Peyton and I start today’s conversation with this topic. She mentions Matthew Liberman’s research

She talks about the panic-grief circuit of the mammalian brain and explains the phenomenon of alarmed aloneness.

Why she prefers the expression alarmed loneliness as opposed to separation anxiety and abandonment

Some key points:

  • The signs of alarmed aloneness
  • Unconscious contracts what we make with ourselves and how can we release ourselves from those harmful agreements and live freely,
  • The hippocampus and the amygdala in forming traumatic memories
  • How do we show up for other people who show us that they need accompaniment? Of course our tendency is to offer advice and solutions. We all yearn for accompaniment, attunement, resonance.
  • The difference between empathy and resonance
Sarah’s first book, Your Resonant Self, includes the foundational neuroscience concepts and client stories that help the reader pave a resonant practice path to self-compassion. Your Resonant Self Workbook builds onto the first book by adding the neuroscience of unconscious contracts, which supports an even deeper movement into self-warmth.

The Complicated Mother-Daughter Relationship23 Sep 202101:05:00

The mother-daughter relationship is one of the most important—and complicated in the lives of most adult women.

Helping my patients understand their mothers has helped me become familiar with parts of myself - and my mother - I might have never known if not for the stories I've heard, says Judith Rabinor, PhD,

We don't choose our mothers but as an adult you always have an opportunity to choose new pathways. It's never too late to let go of frustrated expectations and celebrate the connection you might have thought was doomed to disappointment and hurt.

Your mother is the most important woman you have ever known.

I’d love to suggest some books that I have found helpful:

  1. Motherless Daughters: The legacy of loss by Hope Edelman
  2. Motherless Mothers: How mother loss shapes the parents we become by Hope Edelman
  3. The Emotionally Absent Mother,: How to Recognize and Heal the Invisible Effects of Childhood Emotional Neglect
  4. The Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller
  5. Mothers Who Can’t Love by Susan Forward

Mind-Body Tools to Develop Stress Resilience16 Sep 202101:28:22

Stress is part of life. When stress becomes too intense, too much and too frequent it overwhelms our nervous system, and awakens stress imprints from our past and we lose the ability to effectively recover from it. And for the past year-and-a-half we have been all pushed to our limits and stress and overwhelm have been ever more present in our lives. With stress activation unhealed and unprocessed, we can go through life almost on autopilot. Listen to this fantastic conversation as Rebekkah LaDyne talks about developing mind-body tools for stress resilience.

Key Points:

  • How parenting is an emotional experience and can place tremendous stress on our mind and body, especially if we have trauma history
  • How there is beginning, middle and end to stress and how we often don’t allow ourselves to experience the end, and new stresses over lapse causing more overwhelm
  • How we can develop resilience by daily mind-body practices and there is no quick fix
  • Why the key to well-being and resilience lies in befriending our body

How To Be a Feminist Dad05 Aug 202101:23:50

How feminism liberates everyone, not just women. How patriarchy is hurting men too and the 4 tenets of a feminist dad with Jordan Shapiro, author of Father Figure: how to Be a Feminist Dad.

Here are the 4 principles of a feminist dad:

  • Critical consciousness
  • Responsive fathering
  • Anti-gender essentialism
  • Rigorous inclusivity

Jordan's favorite definition of feminism comes from bell hooks — acclaimed author, theorist, professor, and social activist. In Feminism Is for Everybody: Passionate Politics, she wrote, “Simply put, feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.”

Hard Truth About Parenting the Conscious Way22 Jul 202101:14:57

In our performance, achievement, good grades and behavior oriented culture, we get stuck in unhelpful, old and deeply entrenched patterns. We repeat what we don’t heal. It takes courage, willingness, commitment and hard work (and a whole lot of self-compassion) to parent differently than our parents.

It’s all about deepening our awareness on a daily basis, learning new skills and adapting a process oriented mindset as opposed to result oriented. That's the path to growth and positive change. And change doesn't happen overnight.

If you are like most of us then probably you sometimes question whether or not you're doing a good job as a parent. What we share might surprise you. On this episode with Ellen Gottlieb, author of How to Raise a Parent.

When Kids Don't Listen with Anna Seewald08 Jul 202100:32:04

"We are really struggling with kiddos not listening right now…I’m struggling to be patient and to show up as the parent I would like to be."

In this solo podcast episode I answer some of your parenting questions (posted recently in our FB group).

"We are struggling with our 6.5 year old teasing his brother and yelling at him. My little one is about to turn 3. My boys are whining and struggling to listen. It’s feels like there’s a lot of conflict going."

"How to respond to my 6 yr old's frequent, explosive (& sometimes violent) tantrums - he has several a day over minor frustrations and not getting his way (even in response to long-established rules like no snacks in the hour before dinner)."

I pulled common threads:

  • kids not listening = not cooperating
  • kids having tantrums and whining = exhibiting emotion regulation and impulse control challenges

When it comes to kids not listening-cooperating, there are 2 emotional needs that we need to pay attention to:

  1. Attachment-connection
  2. Autonomy

I can suggest 3 ways to elicit cooperation:

  1. Strengthen connection
  2. Honor and give more autonomy (in what areas you can give more autonomy?)
  3. Decrease control (how can you do that?)

Coping with Loss with Anna Seewald15 Apr 202101:06:15

Warning:

Because of the subject matter: death, loss, grief and the emotional nature of the conversation, this episode might be potentially triggering.

Please assess your own physiological state, if you're ready to consume such content and be gentle to yourself.

Listener description is advised.

In this episode Anna talks about the sudden death of her only living parent, her dad.

Kristy Lauricella, who is Anna’s dear friend and a palliative care social worker, held space for her so that she can share the news of the passing of her dad with you, what she is going through right now and how she is copying with her loss and what she is thinking about end of life as an adult.

As well as, what an influential person her dad was for her in becoming her authentic self and doing the work she is doing today.

Kristy was one of the facilitators at the Authentic Parenting LIVE event in 2019 and she has also appeared on the podcast.

Check out her thought-provoking conversation with Anna called Why We Need to Connect More, which striked a chord with many.

Some key points in this conversation:

  • Grief needs to be witnessed
  • Grieving is an individual process
  • Having a social support is vital in healing
  • Allow feelings to be, feel them, stay with them, and move through them whenever they arise
  • Taking care of yourself will go along the way
  • Tips for talking to kids about death and losing loved ones, no BS
  • Embrace the mystery of life, live your life well to honor the dead and legacy

We hope by hearing her personal story you can find universal themes and value for yourself as loss and grief for many have been real issues in the past year.

Forgiveness with Dr. Fred Luskin18 Mar 202100:57:24

World's foremost expert on forgiveness, Fred Luskin, Ph.D talks about that it takes a willingness to practice forgiveness day after day to see its profound benefits to physical and emotional well-being and to our relationships. He discusses why forgiveness can be so hard to practice and explains:

  • The connection between grief and forgiveness. That before you can forgive, you have to grieve.

The Power of Discord with Ed Tronick, PhD and Glaudia Gold, MD04 Mar 202101:15:30

Did you know that working through the messiness in relationships is the key to connection, trust and resilience?

You might think that perfect harmony is the defining characteristic of healthy relationships yet the truth is that conflict and messiness are not only OK but crucial to our social and emotional development to growth and intimacy.

We need mismatch because without it we can’t experience repair. It turned out on average 70% of the interactions were out of sync. And the repair where the action was. So the most important part was not the mismatch but the repair.

Do you set and hold effective limits with ease, kindness or you have difficulties like many of us? How do you feel when your boundary gets violated? How do you deal with boundary pushers?

  • What is a boundary
  • Types of boundaries
  • The 3 steps to setting boundaries
  • Facing our own feelings
  • Dealing with others’ feeling after boundaries have been set
  • Setting firm and kind limits with kids

{Coaching} 3 Ways to Improve Your Confidence as Parent04 Feb 202101:13:14

What do you do with so much information and advice that is out there? Do you often doubt yourself as a parent whether you are doing it right?

On today's on-air coaching call I'm helping Cara, mom of a one year old girl.

When is the right age for sending a toddler to daycare? When should she wean her baby from breastfeeding? Is it ok to pick up babies when they cry or wait 15 min before responding?

Cara is also faced with a dilemma. To return to work or to stay home with her baby. It turns out this is an emotional territory for her.

When Your Needs Are Not Met with Yvette Erasmus, PsyD28 Jan 202101:20:13

Yvette Erasmus on what happens when your needs are not fulfilled, the difference between needs and feelings, choicefulness, taking responsibility, stopping playing the victim and much more.

Effective communication is at the heart of strong relationships.

A critical aspect of effective communication is learning how to express our needs. But in order to learn to express first we need to get in touch with our needs.

Communication can come into conflict when needs are unfulfilled. Unmet needs can lead to feelings of anger, confusion, disappointment, frustration, hopelessness, irritation, sadness, loneliness and embarrassment, to name only a few.

Fully understanding what we need makes the next step in our communication easier–asking for what we need to enrich life. But it’s not as easy as it sounds.

Dr. Joan Rosenberg is a cutting-edge psychologist, speaker and trainer. She is a two-time TEDx speaker and the author of 90 Seconds to a LIfe You Love.

Most of us are not comfortable with our unpleasant feelings. We tend to avoid, numb out or distract ourselves from feeling their discomfort.

Knowing how to deal with intense, overwhelming and uncomfortable feelings is essential to building confidence, resilience and authenticity. Yet when we disconnect or distract from these feelings we move away from confidence, health, desired pursuits ultimately undermining our ability to fully realize our ambitions.
