The USA vs the Rules Based Order & Australia's preparedness for dealing with it18 oct. 202600:19:38

In this Global Outlook episode, we ask why the National Preparedness discussion is missing the elephant in the room, while covering Trump's purchase of diesel from Russia, the US sanctioning the ICC, and its willingness to livestream an execution.

We look at Trump's purchase of diesel from Russia which does nothing to help US prices but instead helps to fund a war that the USA claims to oppose. Given the Starlink throttling and other recent moves, it should be clear to all that the Trump administration will never help Ukraine. The discussion then turns to the US imposing sanctions on the ICC, which goes against the rules based order that our politicians frequently claim to uphold. Many countries issued statements of support for the ICC yet Australia remained silent.

Another notable issue has been the US cancelling their television coverage of Nidal Hassan's military execution for his heinous crime. The public aspect of this execution has received bipartisan condemnation within the USA and by many other countries. Australia's reaction has been to attempt to attempt to block coverage of the livestream within Australia, yet no official condemnation has been heard, despite Australia doing so when other countries, such as Iran, conduct live executions.

Which brings us back to National Preparedness and how the discussions have been about the situation with China yet not a mention of the USA's transition away from the rules based global order. With the USA now regularly acting against Australia's geopolitical interests, the question must be raised why the government is giving the USA more leverage that can be used against us? This change didn't start with Trump and won't end with Trump, but Australia needs to consider all aspects of preparedness, not just those raised by China.

C-UAS and the importance of sovereign development & data13 oct. 202600:32:55

In this episode, Grant McHerron talks with Ben Westgarth, CEO of Department 13, about detecting and countering uncrewed aerial systems and the importance of sovereign capability.

We begin our discussion by exploring Department 13’s origins in the USA where it was focused on UAS detection, tracking, and electronic warfare capabilities before subsequently relocating to Australia. We then delve into the company's role in developing Counter-UAS technology for civilian and defence uses, and the company's involvement with Land 156 working with Leidos as system integrator to bring its DART system to the program.

The conversation covers how Department 13 counters RF-controlled drones using layered approaches from cyber-level protocol manipulation to more powerful jamming techniques, aiming to reduce the threat's capability or capacity by breaking C2 links or hindering movement. This includes targeting less capable drones first before escalating response levels. We also discuss the critical importance of sovereign development for both hardware and software components in counter-UAS systems, citing supply chain vulnerabilities as a key reason why keeping core IP and capabilities within Australia is non-negotiable.

Finally, we wrap up by considering future developments in drone technology requiring quick adaptation from operators and highlighting the need for local expertise to maintain national security.

Ukraine's Vivaldi, Pakistan hitting the Houthis & South Korea selling fuel to Russia11 oct. 202600:19:26

In this Global Outlook episode, we look at Ukraine halting the Russian advances on Donbas just in time for Putin's 74th birthday, Pakistan attacking the Houthis to help Saudi Arabia, and South Korea selling fuel to Russia while also helping Ukraine.

We start with a look at Ukraine's Operation Vivaldi which has halted Russian plans to take key cities in the Donbas region, which included large UAVs delivering UGVs to cause havoc behind Russian lines. This has effectively defeated the Russian incursions and pushed them back just as the weather changes to reduce ground war options as Winter approaches. Russia's missile and drone attacks on power stations, fuel supplies and civilian targets in Ukraine are now likely to increase even more than has been seen in recent weeks. All of this is occurring at the time of Putin's 74th birthday which raises the question of his health and lack of a nominated successor, and could potentially mobilise opposing factions within Russia that will fight for control.

The discussion then moves to the Middle East where the Saudi's have activated the assistance aspects of their recent agreement with Turkey and Pakistan. As a result, Pakistan are now attacking the Houthis, which may raise questions for India.

The big topic for this episode, though, is the reports that the South Koreans are selling fuel, including Diesel, to Russia via sanctioned vessels, all while being on Ukraine's side. We look at the issue of North Korean POWs that Ukraine is holding, South Korea's previous dealings with Russia, North Korea's closer ties with Russia, and the sinking of a Russian cargo ship near Spain that was taking nuclear reactors to Vladivostok but was likely intended for North Korea. Is supplying fuel to Russia a way for South Korea to establish leverage over them, potentially influencing them to reduce their use of North Korean troops and the military and technical assistance they are providing, including weapons and nuclear reactors? Could the trust and trade disputes between the USA and South Korea be contributing to this? Could the USA leverage their nuclear assistance to South Korea to pressure them to cease supplying the fuel? If the US does use their nuclear technology for leverage, it could show AUKUS' leverage for forcing Australia to support their goals?

BAE Systems' autonomous capabilities on land and in the air07 oct. 202600:31:09

In this episode, Grant McHerron visits BAE Systems Australia to meet with Stuart Bryden, Business Development & Strategy Manager, and Farid Hasan, Program Manager - Autonomy, to discuss the state of autonomous systems.

We begin our discussion by exploring the company's long-standing involvement in autonomous systems, dating back nearly 40 years from programs like Nulka and ESSM. This history laid the groundwork for modern autonomy capabilities now seen on platforms such as Boeing's Ghost Bat and the Atlas UGV, via BAE Systems Australia’s Vehicle Management System.

Next, we delve into the specifics of these systems, including the vehicle management software developed internally at BAE Systems that handles navigation, system health monitoring, and mission planning for Ghost Bat, Atlas, and a fleet of the Army's M113s armoured personnel carriers. The discussion then shifts to the Atlas program, a large eight-wheel-drive platform with an automated turret designed from scratch to operate autonomously both on and off-road, complementing manned counterparts such as infantry fighting vehicles and tanks.

Furthermore, we examine how BAE Systems collaborates with partners such as TerraSense Analytics to enhance its autonomy suite through software and hardware integration, enabling faster development and deployment of capabilities like automatic target tracking. Finally, we consider the future trajectory of autonomy over the next decade, focusing on replacing humans in high-risk tasks for greater efficiency and asymmetric advantage.

Scaling C-UAS capabilities with Praetorian Aeronautics06 oct. 202600:27:58

In this episode, Grant McHerron talks with Brett Hill, CEO and founder of Praetorian Aeronautics about scaling up counter uncrewed aerial systems capabilities and their partnership with Rheinmetall Defence Australia.

We begin our discussion by exploring the inspiration behind Praetorian's name, which stems from Brett’s fascination with ancient Roman history, specifically the Praetorian Guard who were seen as protectors of democracy during the Republic. We delve into Praetorian's core mission of building counter-UAS capabilities to neutralise enemy drones and protect both military personnel and civil society from threats that would target military bases, power plants, or hospitals.

Brett also introduces the Arrow autonomous interceptor system, now at TRL 7, powered by the Hadrian battle management system which fuses sensor data for situational awareness, and the Cerebrum AI system designed to enable one operator to manage multiple drone threats effectively while minimising collateral damage. We wrap up with a discussion of Praetorian's new partnership with Rheinmetall Defence Australia that is being announced at Land Forces 2026.

Global Outlook: Bond pressure, Ethiopia & the New Polar Contest04 oct. 202600:17:53

In our latest Global Outlook, we revisit the bond market, look at the aftermath of Xi's visit to Washington, consider the implications of the war in Ethiopia's Tigray region, and what the US deal on Greenland could mean for Australia's Antarctic holdings.

Yields increasing on the US bond markets increases cost of their borrowing which makes it hard to spend as much as they want on their military and other discretionary spending. As has been seen many times, the bond markets have the power to make leaders hesitate and, in some cases, to end their careers. Following Xi Jinping's visit to Washington it seems that there was a lot of pomp and pagentry for no significant outcomes aside from further delaying decisions.

The Horn of Africa is once again in the news as a civil war within Ethiopia's Tigray province which is introducing problems on the Western side of the Red Sea. Further compounding the issue is their need to route shipping via Djbouti as the formation of Eritrea removed Ethiopia's access to the ocean. Ethiopia also claims Egypt and Sudan are funding the rebels along with Eritrea. It gets even more complicated when you consider that all of the main forces in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Israel and more have stakes in this region along with many other countries. This is a very complicated situation that's only getting worse.

Finally, we look at the USA's recent agreement with Greenland that doesn't get them anything more than they already had aside from a veto of other foreign powers building in Greenland, which Denmark had been blocking anyhow. This approach by the USA to block foreign powers from building there has implications for Antarctica where China is building yet another research base. It is not inconceivable that the USA could pressure Australia to remove China's bases, some of which are on areas of Antarctica claimed by Australia.

ADM Looks At: Land 8710 (Army's watercraft for littoral manoeuvre capability)01 oct. 202600:12:23

Ewen Levick and Nigel Pittaway discuss program Land 8710 which is covering the build of Medium and Heavy Landing Craft plus an amphibious vehicle.

We start with an overview of the two classes of landing craft vessels, the small amphibious vehicle, and the programs indicated time frames, covering how the two landing craft compliment each other in their operational use cases given areas they're intended to work in and ranges they can cover. Next we look at Army's structure changes as documented in the 2024 and 2026 National Defence Strategy documents, changes that started as far back as 2023. These cover four major areas including Command & Control, emerging concepts, required capabilities, and the culture of Army itself, while also standing up three littoral manoeuvre units in Darwin, Townsville and Brisbane.

The discussion moves onto the difference between amphibious operations and littoral operations, while also considering the changes in Army which includes long range strike to support the littoral units. This will mean HiMARS and PrSM, NASAMS for Short Range Air Defence, and the as yet undecided Medium Range Air Defence capability. The latter is under Land 6504 and has been in & out of scope for some years now, despite medium range being just as important as short range in a layered air defence model. Meanwhile, Land 156 is likely to be involved for its Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems capabilities.

We wrap up with a discussion of Army Innovation Day which is happening with Chief of Army Day at Land Forces 2026 and will be focused on the littoral environment. This leads to Army's recent training soldiers in seacraft with Navy, changes in Army's involvement with Talisman Sabre 2027, and the observation that once the transition is completed, Army will be one of the largest littoral forces in the Western world.

RAAF F-35 parts wind up in China, Xi Jinping in USA, & Russia testing NATO?28 sept. 202600:19:30

This is another of our Global Outlook series where we discuss the latest global geopolitical developments that we're keeping an eye on.

We start with the developing story of RAAF F-35 parts being shipped to USA for servicing being diverted to Hong Kong and winding up in Chinese hands, including a canopy which could provide China with classified information. We also look at Xi Jinping's visit to the USA for a summit with President Trump, including whether trade will be impacted, the US$14bn arms sale to Taiwan that Trump is delaying, and the continuing mutual deterrence that is providing some form of strategic stability.

Xi Jinping is in the USA to meet with Trump. Will the supply of rare earths continue as per South Korean agreement? Multual deterrance giving some strategic stability. Will the US continue with the $14bn arms sale to Taiwan or use it as a bargaining chip?

We wrap with a look at recent Russian manoeuvring near Estonia and the potential for the border township of Narva to become a point where Russia tests a weakened NATO's resolve over Article 5. Infiltrating Russian special forces into a Russian speaking town on the border to then act as separatists seeking independence is a move from Russia's playbook that we've seen occur in Crimea and in Ukraine.

We open with the news that DroneShield are working with AIM Defence to include their Fractl laser based C-UAS product in DroneShield's ecosystem of detectors, jammers and C2 products. We also note their DroneSentry-X Mk2 product is being used in the USA. The discussion then moves on to news relating to AUKUS, including the US GAO's report showing that, to the end of 2025, US nuclear submarines had a very large number of "inactive" days across the fleet, either waiting for maintenance or waiting to be decommissioned, during which time they were required to be crewed while tied up at a pier.

On further AUKUS news, we also look at the UK government delaying their purchase of new attack submarines plus the indication that design work is only half way completed, which tends to cast doubt on a previous statement a few years ago from our Navy that the design was 70% complete. We also discuss a UK report on issues with production of the nuclear reactors required for the Dreadnaught and SSN AUKUS submarines, which could further delay SSN AUKUS production for Australia. Both the US and UK reports highlight the need for government watchdogs to be able to publically identify issues and hold governments and militaries to task about their ability to deliver on major projects.

We wrap with feedback from our previous News Review episode which confirmed that the StrikeMaster vehicle used in the NATO exercise had a right hand drive configuration.

Nuclear subs can't solve everything & Houthis help Iran further influence global oil supply21 sept. 202600:19:55

This is another of our Global Outlook series where we discuss the latest global geopolitical developments that we're keeping an eye on.

We start by quickly noting that Canada is seeking to become an associate member of the EU in order to balance against threats from the United States, while there are rumours of Xi Jinping's possible health issues which, true or not, highlight the impacts to China's leadership if he should pass without an heir. A situation which would also apply to Russia should Putin's health give out.

Moving on we look at Kevin Rudd's recent speach at the Australian Institute of International Affairs where he highlighted the size of our coastline and our dependence on trade to justify the need for a World Class Navy and nuclear attack submarines. While we do not disagree about the need for a world class navy, we note our concerns at the number of maritime and joint capabilities that have been cancelled or reduced in order to fund AUKUS. The list is long and that's not even including purely Army or Air Force capabilities. We also note that Canada has a longer coastline than Australia and they have purchased advanced diesel electric submarines from TKMS, not nuclear boats. We also note that if we want to protect trade, our largest trade partner is China, but we are justifying AUKUS as defence against China. Our concern is that we will not have a world class Navy if we keep defunding new and updated capabilities while not funding sustainment to the levels our current Navy requires.

Next up is, of course, the Houthis taking control of Western Yemen and being in the perfect position to deny Saudi vessels access to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. We note that the Saudi's lack of embedded officers with the Yemenis to coordinate strikes from long range fires or aircraft meant that there were no airstrikes on the Houthis. We also discuss the USA declining to support the Saudis and that Iran now has some level of control over two critical oil routes.

From there we look at Stephen Miller's claims that rule of power and might is now the way of the world, as it previous has been, ignoring the evidence that demonstrates the fallacy of this argument: Iran hasn't capitulated and Greenland hasn't been invaded. If anything this reinforces the power of the bond market and how the USA remains tied to NATO as the USA's senior leadership becomes an echo chamber following the loss of so many experienced staff from the State Department and Department of Defence.

We wrap by returning to nuclear attack submarines and note that, while they are incredible and powerful elements of a world class navy, they are not the solution to everything. A balanced force is required for a world class Navy and Australia is not committing the funds required to ensure it has one.

Global Outlook on the Falklands, the bond market, and Israel vs Turkey13 sept. 202600:19:06

This is the first of our new Global Outlook series where we discuss the latest global geopolitical developments that we're keeping an eye on.

We start with the situation between the UK, Argentina and the USA over the contentious issue of the Falkland Islands where oil reserves have been discovered. While Argentina's capabilities have reduced and the UK has increased its protection of the islands, Argentina continues to claim the islands and the USA is willing to use this dispute against its own ally. If they're willing to do this against the UK, along with their approach to Canada, clearly they would do the same to Australia if they wanted to claim their bases in Australia as sovereign US territory.

We then move onto the one thing in the world that could change the Trump administration's course and that's the global bond market, which has toppled a UK Prime Minister and already made the administration blink early in their current tenure. After this, we turn to the Middle East where Israel and Turkey are starting to posture and position against each other, which is also impacting Greece which has improved relationships with Israel. As this develops, all eyes will be on the USA to see how they react if the situation between three of their allies deteriorates significantly.

US to increase military presence in Australia, StrikeMaster success, and Indonesia's carrier07 sept. 202600:11:46

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Nigel Pittaway and Kirra Davey discuss a few recent news items of interest.

We start with the news that Defence Minister Marles has met with the US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to discuss increasing US military presence in Australia, with more details expected after the next AUSMIN meetings expected before the end of 2026. The discussion moves on to the news that the StrikeMaster has been involved in NATO exercises in Europe, with Kongsberg and Thales referring to the capability as ready to go now, thanks to the NSM and Bushmaster being in production. Meanwhile, the PrSM increment 2 missile with the ability to hit moving targets remains in development.

Finally, we look at a former Italian aircraft carrier being donated to Indonesia on the proviso that Indonesia funds any refurbishment it may require. We wrap with a discussion regarding ADM's presence at Land Forces and the WA Defence Summit next month plus note that the next issue of the magazine will be delivered in time for distribution at both events.

Women in Defence: Supporting the spouses and families of members and industry staff26 août 202601:17:01

In this episode we present the audio from ADM's Women In Defence Network and Women in Defence UK webinar held on the 24th of June. The panelists were Kelly Hopkins, Director of Defence at Hays, Natalie Desty, the founder and director of STEM Returners, Hayley Boswell, founder of Defence Kids, and Helen Callis, director of Recruit for Spouses. The moderator was Kathryn Essex, Head of Defence and Security Industry or Australia and New Zealand at the British High Commission in Canberra.

The episode commences with an overview of the issue from Kylie Leonard, ADM's Associate Publisher, who also tells us about the Women in Defence Networks coming up during the year. Next up, Kathryn Essex introduces the panelists and opens the session with the first topic, which was to identify one structural change defence organisations could make to help retain spouses and families over the long term. This leads to the next topic which was how organisations can make use of carers returning to the workforce rather than treating them as a risk.

Next up we review the work of Defence Kids and the importance of supporting children through their parent's deployments and relocations. This leads to a discussion of how best to position military spouses as part of the future talent pipeline for AUKUS.

We wrap up with a series of questions from the audience and also reflecting on each country's unique approach can benefit others through shared knowledge and coordinated efforts.

South Korean exercise cancelled, balance of power impacts, and our ground based air defence23 août 202600:25:52

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron and Ewen Levick discuss a couple of topical subjects and their implications for Australia.

With the Strait of Hormuz becoming a forever war, there's not much new to mention there so we start with a discussion about Donald Trump dramatically scaling back joint military exercises with South Korea and other countries, incuding Australia, due to cost and not wanting to appear hostile to North Korea. Meanwhile, North Korea is sending troops to Russia to help with Ukraine while Russia is sending them their latest military technology, disrupting the balance of power on the Korean peninsula. How does this development align with Australia's views of Korea and peace in the Asian region?

We also discuss President Trump's executive order telling the Pentagon to investigate going back to steam catapults for the new Ford class aircraft carriers and to also move the superstructure (aka "The Island") further forward to improve its looks. What implications could this have to the AUKUS program, SSN AUKUS, and US expectations of Australia's supply of funds to the US coffers.

Meanwhile, Australia appears to have recognised the need for Ground Based Air Defence systems that has been demonstrated in the Iran conflict. We discuss our current defensive capability against aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, then assess progress to date on the various projects to field Medium Range GBAD including 6502 and 6503 being folded into 6500 then defunded. We look at the reasons for the pause in 2024 and how current efforts reflect against those justifications.

Hormuz, Saronic's Corsair, and the Middle Powers "distraction"19 juil. 202600:25:02

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence.

We open with a discussion of the Hormuz Strait being closed once again which leads to the topic of Uncrewed Surface Vessels being used as weapons, indicating a new phase of naval warfare is beginning. This segways into a discussion about Saronic's Corsair USV which is currently being pitched to our Navy. The Corsair has recently been in the news as one was used to rescue the crew of an Apache that had crashed into the water, then a few weeks later a team of Corsairs were used to destroy an Iranian midget submarine that was docked in harbour.

Next up is a discussion on Elbridge Colby's recent set of tweets calling the "Middle Powers" strategy a distraction and stating that the USA are "flexible realists." We note that the countries in question are the realists who are reacting to the USA becoming a less reliable ally, discussing the geopolitical situation and the factors that are driving the rise of the middle powers concept.

We wrap with a quick look at Exercise Pitch Black 2026 which is starting flight operations with multiple nations bringing aircraft, aircrew and support teams, some of which will be appearing for the first time this year.

Defence Delivery Agency transition and JORN capability sale to Canada05 juil. 202600:17:58

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence.

We open with a discussion of the new Defence Delivery Group that started on 1st July and will transition to being the Defence Delivery Agency on 1st July 2027. There are many ways that this could become another failed attempt at changing Defence but there is hope and only time will tell.

After that, we look at the sale of the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) Over the Horizon Radar (OTHR) to Canada that was signed late in June. It is cutting edge technology, a great export opportunity for Australia, and will be interesting to see how it operates in a polar environment with different ionospheric characteristics and behaviours to those JORN experiences in Australia and to our north. Balancing sovereignty with local production capability01 juil. 202600:32:21

In this episode, Grant McHerron talks with Christopher Rule, the General Manager for Defence, Security and Resilience at GME, about navigating the defence industry landscape and the government's push for support sovereign capability .

We begin our discussion by exploring GME’s products, services, and clients, including their three-pillar business model of engineering and advanced manufacturing services, partnerships with US-based cybersecurity firms, and acquisition of Eylex for defence capabilities. We examine the sourcing of their components, noting that strict requirements often necessitate international suppliers despite Australia's sovereign manufacturing focus. Our discussion also explores government initiatives supporting this goal, such as Defence Industrial Grants helping diversification into defence, and the Advanced Capability Investment Fund (ACIF) encouraging private investment.

We wrap up by assessing the gap that medium-sized companies experience when trying to break into the defence industrial base, and the type of support they need to do so.

The RAAHC's Firepower Series: Learning from history to improve readiness for future conflict23 juin 202600:22:51

In this episode, Grant McHerron talks with Nick Floyd and James Eling of the Royal Australian Artillery Historical Company (RAAHC) regarding the RAAHC and the Firepower seminars being conducted this year around Australia.

We begin our discussion by exploring the history and purpose of RAAHC, including its formation in 1981 as a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving Australian artillery heritage . We then delve into the Firepower seminar series, which has previously examined World War I and II artillery experiences, and the topics for this year's presentations which are reviewing Australia's mobilization challenges during the buildup to WWII and the similar issues being faced in today's geopolitical environment. The seminars cover key topics including building sovereign industrial capability, continental defense against Japanese threats in WWII and adaptation to joint operations in littoral environments.

We wrap up by assessing how these historical insights inform the Australian Army's future development, emphasizing agility and learning from past mistakes due to rapid technological change.

Moving sustainment into the foreground16 juin 202600:33:11

In this episode, Grant McHerron and Neill Morgan, the partner for maritime sustainment at Coras, discuss the importance of sustainment for Defence.

Our discussion starts by exploring the importance of including sustainment in defence acquisition processes early on. We delve into blind spots such as industry's tendency to treat sustainment as an afterthought, often overlooking risks like poor technical documentation or unclear data rights that stem from this delay and how predictable risks (e.g., obsolescence and funding gaps) which are frequently underestimated due to inadequate upfront planning.

We conclude with the necessity of proper mobilisation to ensure the right people, access, and resources are present for a smooth transition, and better governance structures in sustainment contracts.

Ghost Bat in Berlin, PMB Defence with TKMS, & impacts of the UK Defence Secretary's resignation14 juin 202600:16:09

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence.

We start the episode discussing Boeing's MQ-28A Ghost Bat which is being displayed at the ILA Berlin Air Show as it's in consideration for Germany's Collaborative Combat Aircraft role. Boeing announced at the event a series of upgraded capabilities for the MQ-28 along with the addition of Diehl Defence and Rohde & Schwarz to the Ghost Bat industry team. From there we move on to the announcement that PMB Defence and TKMS have partnered on the Canadian submarine bid which, if successful, will see PMB supplying batteries for each boat.

After those news items, it's over to the UK where the British Defence Secretary has abruptly resigned in protest of the government's failure to spend sufficient funds on Defence. In addition to throwing a spanner in the plans for Richard Marles and Penny Wong who are there for the AUKMIN meetings, this also raises the question of what effect are the billions of dollars Australia is sending to the UK Defence Industry actually having? Also, the UK's Defence spend as % GDP is higher than Australia's yet so if the UK's can be considered insufficient, what are the implications for Australia?

We wrap up with a look at the need for a bridging submarine capability that could be done instead of Collins LOTE, given that program is doing less and costing more than planned. With the very real chance of delays, both in receiving Virginia class submarines and production of SSN AUKUS, it is becoming clearer that extending the aging Collins class into the 2040s may not be the best solution.

Women in Defence: Institutional Change Under Pressure: Progress, Procurement and Power09 juin 202600:53:52

In this episode we present the audio from the recent online event organised by ADM Women in Defence and National Security and the Women in Defence UK organisation. The event commenced with an introduction from the Hon Pat Conroy MP, Minister for Defence Industry and Minister for Pacific Island Affairs.

The event's MC was Angela Owen OBE, founder of Women in Defence UK, and the discussion panel consisted of Karin Vosmansky, Executive Director at Mack Valves Pty Ltd, Kisa Christensen, Director for Integrated Defence and Autonomy Systems (IDAS) at BAE, Donna Sinnick, Chief Delivery Officer at Babcock International Group, and Pete Burden, CEO of KDC Products.

The discussion begins with a focus on the collaboration between Australia and the UK defence industries, highlighting initiatives like AUKUS Pillar 2. It explores how companies are adapting to a rapidly changing strategic environment characterised by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA). It also covers Nova Systems' evolution from test and evaluation into broader mission integration and assurance.

We get an insight into the ongoing challenge of attracting and retaining women in defence roles, particularly engineering. Panelists stress the need to start recruitment early, combat stereotypes, enhance work-life balance flexibility, and foster a supportive culture within both Defence and industry partners like Babcock International Group, who actively promote female representation on boards and executive committees. The panel also touches upon leveraging dual-use technology for national resilience beyond defence alone and pathways into careers via secondments or diverse roles.

Interviews from the Indian Ocean Defence and Security 2026 event03 juin 202600:57:12

This episode is a compilation of interviews we recorded at the Indian Ocean Defence and Security 2026 event held in Perth in May. During the show, Kirra and Grant were able to catch up with Senator James Paterson, then Grant recorded a number of interviews with Ocius, Greenroom Robotics, Hyperion, Ausco Group, GlenAir, and Quantum Systems Australia. We hope you enjoy this compilation of content from IODS 2026.

=—-=

Senator James Paterson confirms his advocacy for AUKUS and recommends that a supplementary capability be established in place of Collins LOTE to bridge the gap to obtaining nuclear submarines. He also notes his concerns about transparency within the Integrated Investment Plan (IIP), and contrasting government versus private finance roles in sustaining critical infrastructure. He also discusses the proposed retirement of the C-27J Spartan aircraft and calls for thorough evaluation before retiring established non-combat capabilities.

=—-=

We then explore Robert Dane's review of Bluebottle technology development, the company's collaboration with the RAN and their 24/7 deployment from Darwin monitoring northern approaches. We also discuss renewable energy benefits, including minimal mobilization costs due to rechargeable batteries at sea, current vessel deployments averaging two and a half months each, and future developments for Ocius' autonomous systems capabilities.

=—-=

Next up, we talk with Harry Hubbert of Greenroom Robotics to discuss the company's rapid scaling across multiple countries, collaborations with SMEs like Hyperion Systems, and their focus on providing intelligence for 3D printed vessels using containerized tech to reduce costs and supply chain risks. We then look at addressing vulnerabilities being raised by the current Hormuz situation through the addition of autonomous capabilities to existing vessels for logistics support before discussing the new people who have joined the company and contemplating all that may be announced before or at Land Forces later this year.

=—-=

Following on from Greenroom, we talk with Josh Wigley from Hyperion about their Astra platform of boats that are built using additive manufacturing and including Greenroom Robotics' autonomy systems. Josh outlines the comapny's three-pillar approach (machines, products, feedstock) and how they are leveraging 3D printing to rapidly build flexible boats addressing supply chain needs in Australia via local material recycling and micro-factory deployment. We consider the benefits HDPE material provides for boat hulls compared to traditional materials, leading to a discussion of Hyperion's own materials testing lab for certification (AMSA) and how the company is actively raising capital.

=—-=

Keeping to the Maritime focus, Alex Murphy outlines his role at Ausco Group and the organisation's maritime autonomous systems, exploring their background (Ausco Marine & Products), key products like Gannett Dive LRX launch/recovery system, AMAS intelligent buoy for surface-based ISR and seabed sensors, sea-floor battery systems enabling underwater operation without surface power, and assessing the capabilities of these technologies in defence.

=—-=

Next up, we talk with Greg Cameron about Glenair's role in defence/aerospace connectors, their high-reliability expertise, and their engineering philosophy driving reliability across diverse applications like military vehicles and soldier kits. Specific product examples are discussed including power/data hubs and vehicle-mounted systems, before we move on to ensuring performance standards via an independent test lab, and look at future directions and their Australian based team.

Hormuz remains closed & the Collins LOTE's scope changes again24 mai 202600:21:52

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence.

We start by welcoming back Ewen and noting that in the eight weeks or so that he's been away the Strait of Hormuz remains closed with the US Navy unable to re-open it. We look at what this means for military engagements going forward, and the issues associated with keeping the very important sea lanes open in the straits to our North. The Middle East situation and the recent Venezuelan raid demonstrate that the US military is tactically incredible and practically unbeatable, but it doesn't seem to have the political force required to win the war overall. We finish the Hormuz review by observing that many apabilities that were previously being demonstrated and tested are now combat proven.

Next up, Kirra attended the recent Axon Tech Summit in Sydney which focused on the use of rones and counter-UAS systems for public safety, while Grant attended the opening of Corvus Technology Solutions' new factory in Melbourne, catching up with Minister Collin Brooks who has now taken on the role of Victoria's first Defence Industry Minister. So far it seems that WA, SA & VIC are the states with ministerial portfolios for Defence.

Sentinel Boats have sold their 830R-SPOL to the ADF's Special Operations Forces, which is great to see them achieve a military sale in Australia in addition to their contact with the NZDF. Kirra recounts her experience with the 830R during a demo on Sydney Harbour prior to IndoPac 2026.

We wrap the episode by looking at the Collins Class submarine Life Of Type Extension program's scope changing yet again, with $11 billion allocated towards keeping the boats operational into the 2040s. Given they were delivered in the 90s and due to be retired in the 20s, this begs the question of whether they can be kept operational and effective for another 20 years. This highlights the lack of "Plan B" for AUKUS and perhaps it's time for some political leadership to demand a bridging capability, much as occurred when the Super Hornets were ordered to bridge the gap to the RAAF's F-35s arriving and becoming operational.

Securing a trusted workforce to tackle project bottlenecks12 mai 202600:31:28

In this episode, Grant McHerron talks with Matt Kirk, the Director of Trusted Workforce at Worksec, and we’ll be discussing the importance of a trusted workforce.

We begin our discussion by exploring the current workforce issue in defence and government sectors, focusing on the bottleneck caused by trust concerns rather than technological limitations. We examine how projects can be delayed due to personnel clearance issues, with companies often finding themselves unable to proceed because they lack cleared staff at critical stages like tendering. The conversation delves into why this issue hasn't been fixed yet, highlighting factors such as supply chain competition and sovereignty concerns. There's a significant backlog of clearances needed for defense projects globally. We also assess the threats posed by an unvetted workforce, particularly insider risk when working with sensitive information or classified positions. The ability to vet humans remains one of the biggest challenges in security clearance processes.

We wrap up by discussing how WorkSec helps resolve these workforce trust issues through their 'Security Officer as a Service' offering, allowing companies to outsource governance and compliance tasks entirely while still meeting mandatory requirements like DISP membership criteria.

Different shades of sovereignty with Corvo X, PrSM Increment 2 & solid rocket motors10 mai 202600:13:38

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence.

We start with traffic still not clearing the Hormuz Strait and the implications it has for farmers, fuel reserves and Defence capability. Fortunately the NDS & IIP are calling out improvements to our on-shore fuel storage.

Next up we congratulate SYPAQ Sustems' Corvo X small UAS entering into service, including on-going innovation and updates being included in the sustainment agreement. From there we look at the Land 8113 Phase 2 announcement for land based maritime strike going to Lockheed Martin with HiMARS and PrSM Increment 2, despite that missile not being in production as yet. We note that we already have HiMARS with GMLRS and have an agreement with the USA to assist with PrSM development and local production. That said, the question must be asked about why Kongsberg's StrikeMaster wasn't selected given Bushmasters are already produced in Australia and the NSM will be in production here from early 2027.

We wrap by looking at the recent announcement of the government signing an agreement with Northrup Grumman towards establishing a sovereign Solid Rocket Motor production facility in Australia. It's targeting the early 2030s for production but is starting with exploration, discussions and clarification of potential requirements and processes. The announcement noted this would build on DSTG's Australian designed and built DRACO SRM which was static fired at Woomera in Feb, bringing NG's 70+ years of SRM experience while also including collaboration with Australian companies DefendTex, Black Sky Industries and Anduril Australia to “explore their novel manufacturing methods.”

Reading the NDS & IIP tea leaves while the Mogami contract is signed21 avr. 202600:18:51

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Nigel Pittaway and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence.

The big news is, of course, that the NDS and IIP have been released so we've been working through them to look for any surprises or concerns. There's plenty of missiles and provision for upgrades to the E-7A Wedgetail, BAE Hawk, and Hobart class Air Warfare Destroyers, which all are then to be replaced before the end of the ten year coverage of the IIP. Virginia class subs are still showing as happening when expected but mine counter measures barely gets a reference, being buried in a secondary maritime category. While there will likely be cuts to a number of programs to support all the spending, even with the stated increase to the Defence budget, the only program that gets called out is the C-27J capability which is to be wound down as it's not lived up to its promise as a tactical, battlefield air lifter.

We wrap up with the news that the Mogami contract has been signed for the first three General Purpose Frigates to be built in Japan, but we note the elephant in the room which is the Henderson Precinct's readiness to start building subsequent ships in WA from 2029.

ADM Looks At: The Hunter Class Frigate Program29 mars 202600:14:00

Ewen Levick and Nigel Pittaway discuss the Hunter Class Frigate Program, with build of the first three ships well under way and more information being supplied about the ship design and the program itself.

After discussing the current status, we consider the ship's design which is based on the UK's Type 26 Frigate, itself a replacement for their Type 23, noting the complexity of the design, its need to run as quietly as possible, and the differences Australia has introduced to the baseline. We also note that while Norway is buying the identical ship to the UK's design, the Canadians have also elected to modify the design for their River Class Frigates.

We also address the issues raised in the mainstream media regarding the Hunter being overweight, over budget and late. While the Australian changes have added 500 tonnes to the design and increased the beam, the 2% performance impact against the Type 26 is considered within margins, especially given the increased capability it will have given the CEA radar and Aegis installation. It is acknowledged that the original budget of $35bn has increased to $44bn, however this appears to cover infrastructure build at Osborne in addition to the ship build itself. BAE Systems state that their $11.9bn contract for the first three ships is very close to their original estimate supplied to the government.

The original schedule from 2019 has been delayed by 18 months due to COVID, the Type 26 design not being as mature as epxected, and delays from Australian design changes. The rebaselined schedule is currently being followed and the first ship is expected to be delivered in 2031. We wrap by noting the Australian industry that's already involved in the Hunter program and the opportunities for exports into the Global Combat Ship program which covers all four countries that will operate the Type 26.

Vale the Defence Major Projects Report, good StrikeMaster news, and the Iran situation22 mars 202600:25:15

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron and Ewen Levick review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence.

We open with a discussion about the Defence Major Projects Report coming to an end, which is reducing the public's access to how Defence is spending billions of dollars, including project delays, major issues, and more. Previous ANAO reports have helped identify significant deficiencies in LHD sustainment and more, so given the volumes of money involved in these projects, the secrecy now being established is of great concern.

We move on to Kongsberg's StrikeMaster demonstration vehicle remaining in Europe for demonstrations to interested countries in the area while also noting the recent test flight of the PrSM Increment 2 missile. We then discuss the current situation in Iran and the impacts of the closure of the Straits of Hormuz, which go well beyond delays in supplying crude oil and liquefied natural gas. Other raw products are also being blocked which will have major impacts on production of components for radars, fighters and more, not to mention the impacts on fertilisers and other products required to support agriculture and other industries.

We wrap it up by noting that the next ADM Looks At episode is coming soon and the topic is the Hunter Class Frigate, that the 30 Under 30 winners have been announced, and that the next ADM Women in Defence Network event is coming up, and this time it's an online event with participants in Australia and the UK.

Developing uncrewed vehicles for air, land, and sea domains17 mars 202600:22:26

In this episode, Grant McHerron talks with Sam Vye, founder and CEO of SYOS Aerospace, about its recent contract with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) to supply uncrewed vehicles across air, land, and sea domains.

We explore SYOS’s history and the benefits of contracting to a sovereign provider, then delve into how these systems are designed for experimentation in current conflict environments. Our discussion also examines the importance of operational testing versus simulation, highlighting real world lessons from deployments like those in Ukraine.

We wrap up by assessing SYOS's role as a sovereign capability provider to the NZDF and their involvement with the UK's Project NYX which will pair autonomous uncrewed systems with the Army's Apache helicopters.

ADM Looks at: MQ-28A Ghost Bat08 mars 202600:18:27

Ewen Levick and Nigel Pittaway discuss Boeing's MQ-28 Ghost Bat, the first aircraft designed and built in Australia in over 50 years. Originally referred to as the Boeing Airpower Teaming System under the Loyal Wingman Advanced Development Program, the first flight of the uncrewed system was on 27th February 2021 and it was officially named the MQ-28A Ghost Bat on 21st March 2022.

Following a summary of the product's history, we then look at the differences between the Block 1, 2 & 3 versions, and the reporting by some media that Ghost Bat wouldn't be armed. The discussion also covers Boeing's new production facility at Wellcamp airport, the project's transition from DEF6014 to AIR6015, the likely number being produced and the importance of having combat mass.

We also talk about Exercise Carlsbad where the Ghost Bat was exercised through a series of trials that culminated in a missile shoot against a target drone, including a look at relative lack of commands required to generate the flight and missile shot, We wrap up by noting the proliferation of Collaborative Combat Aircraft programs, how a crowded market could be a good thing, and why it may be that we're seeing more autonomy activity in the air and sea domains than on land.

Iran, the co-investment fund, Hypersonix passes Mach 5, and 125 years of Army & Navy04 mars 202600:15:33

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick, Nigel Pittaway and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence.

We start with the current military operations over Iran and the Middle East, which Ewen notes can be traced from the 2020 assassination of Iran's General Qasem Soleimani through Hamas' attack on October 7th, 2023, and the collapses since then. We then talk about ADM Congress and the Women in Defence and National Security breakfast session held on the same day, before reviewing the government's Co-Investment Fund that was announced at Congress. The fund is a recognition that government can't fund all of Defence, of the need for certainty to help industry, and that many private investments are in dual use infrastructure.

We move onto the topic of Hypersonix' Dart AE completing its first flight, during which it achieved speeds greater than Mach 5 following a boost from Rocket Lab's Haste launch vehicle operating from NASA's Wallops Island range. Following this, we wrap by noting that Army & Navy are celebrating 125 years in 2026 and that Navy's celebrations include a Fleet Review in Sydney harbour on March 21st.
