Greetings and happy May errbody! In this episode, I'm giving you my 2 cents on best practices for being a kickass artistic collaborator.
You'll hear:
Here's the pretty thing I made! I'm relaunching Diamonds in the Dark this week, and anyone who enrolls before Friday at midnight will have access to a LIVE session of the Buttermelt Workshop
What kind of collaborators? 5:00
Big stinky rule #1: 5:30 Please confront your people pleasing tendencies, so you can bring your whole self to the table
Big stinky rule #2: Please learn how to communicate your opinions, either the easy agreeable kind or the dissenting kind 10:25
An example from my life of a collaborator communicating badly, but another collaborator saving the day 13:06
When to give a collaborator the stanky boot 15:00
How to create a realistic timeline 18:00 (it's nice and simple math)
All about seasonality, and a bit of a spicy rant about why we need it so much. As well as me waxing poetic about slutty gardening, candle pouring, and having time that I never wanted (but am actually enjoying).
You'll hear:
Diamonds in the Dark is relaunching next week, I hope you'll join me for the relaunch, it'll be fun! Sign up here for the email list: https://poser.ck.page/profile
Why the 40 hour workweek is a load of shit.
Why I hate charging by the hour and refuse to do it.
If you feel compelled to work more, even if you don't need to work more, whose values are you adhering to?
What does seasonality actually look like in practice? 14:00
Please join me for an hour of the chats with my super cool accountant, the great Sandi York of Fit Money Coach! The older I get, the more I see the consequences of not pursuing financial literacy even though *insert all the reasons it is perfectly horrible to learn financial literacy*. Ways that you can work with Sandi and let her change your life for the better 49:30
As promised to Rachel- a whole bunch of advice on the do's and don't of creating a demo reel! Rachel asked:
" I have a request for a podcast episode, as an "amateur" aerialist who is trying to gig more, I feel comfortable with rates in my local area and am working on getting insurance, but I don't have a demo reel. And all of my footage of performances are kinda shitty phone videos, I am also not financially able to hire a videographer to make me some new footage. Production companies who I've spoken with have asked for demos, and I totally get it, but I'm not sure what to do.
I'm sure I'm not the only one in this pickle, so hoping you could help some cash poor newbies get hired."
What you will hear:
(Unrelated to demo reels) if you want to read a detailed expose of my surgical experience with photos (nothing gory, only cute) you can do that here on the Patreon!
What needs to go on a demo reel 6:31
A very common mistake artists make when sitting down to create a demo reel 8:00
The point of a demo reel 8:30
How long should it be? 9:19 (but also...how long is someone actually going to watch)
11:16 my recommendation for video editing on mobile that I've seen
This episode is brought you to by my friend KT's question: "Honoring the rib ache! It’d be really cool to hear a deep dive on it/your experiences ignoring and following that feeling. I revisited the idea recently when I found myself doing a bunch of random shit I wasn’t enjoying just to make more money."
What you'll hear:

Why platitudes like "follow your bliss" are well intended but meaningless 14:00
How rib aches can become boundaries, and boundaries can become rules...and sometimes rules need to be broken.

Consider this someone asking you: WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR CREATIVE PRACTICE at this time in your life?
The answer I get to that question more than any other: I have no idea because I don't know what's available
Have you just identified your homework? (props to the Maestro for this one!)

A buffet episode is where I take as many questions as I can answer from readers in about 20 minutes. I get a lot of amazing questions that I don't always have 20 minutes of material about, but I still think they are incredibly valuable and I want to address them. Solution? Buffet episode!
This episode is by request from Leasha the Kiwi (thanks babes!) as a follow up to Episode 65: Dealing with Competition in Small Communities. Spoiler- part of my advice was to lean into what sets you apart. Excellent question, let's dive into it.
A fast and amazingly accurate way to discover what sets you apart
How anger is a compass that points back to your value system
Ways that leaning into what sets you apart is good for the entire world (because anything that gives you back more of your humanity is good for the world)
Lil story time about an Audacity Project Alumni who made a very valuable identification about her own work and what sets her apart
Another reminder that YOUR JOY IS AN ACT OF PROTEST!
How we met (we don't remember) and how we became close (because those are different things) by going through The Artist's Way together. Even though we were already friends before that.
What gives you the AUDACITY?
Considering the impact you wish to make on the world

The Audacity Project Cycle 26 waitlist is open now! 8 weeks of targeted group coaching for artists and creative entrepreneurs to get their shit together. We're enrolling in late February, and this waitlist is definitely the place to be.
Tension arises between organizations in a small community when they have differing value systems.
Are you the problem? Two questions you can ask yourself.
If you aren't paying yourself because you don't need the money, you don't have a sustainable business- you have a luxury passion project. I'll tell you why that can have devastating effects on your community if you're unaware of it.
What happens if you get tired of fighting for high standards?
What to do if you are competing with another organization who is problematic (spoiler alert, lean WAY IN to what makes you stand out)
Enrollment for The Audacity Project, Cycle 26 starts in just a few weeks- if you wanna get ahead of all this shit and build something gorgeous for yourself, hop on the waitlist to be the first to know!
My own thoughts and rituals surrounding pre and post-show rituals, and ways I keep my performance the primary function of my day (spoiler alert: it's not by doing more things).
I'll throw out some suggestions for keeping your nervous system nice and tidy- including foods to eat and when to eat them. And don't forget to bring food with you please!
Personally, I have one singular non-negotiable pre-show ritual, and I'm pretty neurotic about it. Whatever rituals you construct for yourself, I hope they are in service of your own capacity to ENJOY YOUR WORK.
Happy New Year and welcome to the FIRST EVER guest episode! It is my distinct pleasure to bring on Dr. Shante Cofield, aka the Movement Maestro, who has been and continues to be a massively positive influence in my life. A PT by trade and a coach and online biz owner by choice, Shante uses her platform to inspire coaches and business owners to do the damn thing using savvy strategy, lived experience, and her trademark approach of unapologetic authenticity.
Welcome to the Land Outside of Time, that weird week between Crimmas and NYE where nothing gets done, and that's a Good Thing. I hope you're enjoying it.
First off, you have ONE WEEK to get on the mailing list for January's Woo Corner! Coming out 1/4/24, join here, it's good for your health: https://rachelstricklandcreative.ck.page/
This episode starts out with some of my favorite year-in-review exercises, and some insights I've had because of them. These exercises include:
Dreaming up the new year- a dreamy little workbook that was SO MUCH FUN to do for me. By the great Kasia Urbaniak
If all you want is the meat of the episode for things you need to create an artistic film, skip to 11:00 in. Examples of films I've made include: The Tower and Midas is King
You'll hear:
The three things you need to create anything: Vision, Resources, and Skill
When to do things yourself, and when to bring other people into the project like a videographer, editor, support staff, or a musician(s)
Other considerations for your film such as the background score
Shout out to the amazing Tyler Parks of Big Pants Productions for editing both of my films so beautifully
What is ambient performance, and how long should a set be? How many sets are enough? How many are too many? And how long can we really expect one person to do slow moving splits on the fabric in one evening?
And who actually wants to see that for hours and hours at a time?
defining ambient performance, especially in terms of aerial performance
my own spicy opinions based on my lived experience in the industry for 16+ years
science-backed components to consider for the length of ambient sets
And because today's episode is about Instagram, if you're not already following the great Shante Colefield then look no further, she's the GOAT for all things Instagram related. Check her out here: https://www.instagram.com/themovementmaestro/
The meat of today's episode is by listener request: If you don't want to share the new work you're developing on the Gram, what do you share?? The answer: literally everything. Photos Video snippets of old performances Asking questions Posting quotes Giving your opinion Bits of things you've been doing for literally years, it's always new to someone Stories behind/the history of a skill Take a moment of something new and either speed it way up or slow it way down so it's unrecognizable, but still shareable without inventing new material Repost something old (an actual post can be posted again, omg magic I love it)
This episode is dedicated to anyone who ever got their wish...then realized, "this kind of sucks." It's my belief that this is actually a tremendously positive thing, dressed in a very disappointing outfit. Here's my advice on what to do when you're ready to acknowledge something isn't compatible with your happiness- be it an artistic project or a job.
Ever felt an overwhelming sense of exhaustion creeping in, making your day-to-day coaching job seem like an uphill battle? I know the name of that tune. In this episode I share my own experience with burnout, and outline three ways to change your coaching practice so it works for you and not the other way around.
But first Imma overshare about my personal life a little bit, for shits and giggles.
This episode is an exploration of the surprising power that comes from harnessing creativity in isolation, and how to stop being so damned isolated if you're tired of it.
This episode of Audacity Works pulls back the curtain on the often obscured challenges artists face, especially when venturing into unrestricted creative opportunities like residencies. From the weight of high expectations to the struggle to connect with their inspiration, we delve into the deep dark nasty of art-making. The episode was inspired by the journey of a young artist I mentored during her residency, with her blessing.
We'll touch on the importance of surrender and humility in the process of art-making, the oft-unspoken acceptance of unexpected twists and turns, and the normalcy of emotions like grief and confusion that permeate the creative process. I'll tell you about a particularly challenging residency of my own, sharing how I had to confront and process a garbage fire of emotional baggage before I could do a single damn productive thing. This episode is a sincere and thought-provoking discourse on art-making and creativity, urging artists to embrace the entirety of their journey, including the shadows.
I'm on a quest to understand the critical difference between passive pleasures like binge-watching your favorite series and active pleasures that require your energy and focus. This episode aims to give you some tools to help you steer clear of burnout. We dig deep into the difference between pleasure and restorative activities, sharing our collective experiences with a comprehensive list of over 200 pleasures and almost 50 unique restorative practices (crowd-sourced!).
Who knew the potency of voicing thoughts aloud or the power hidden in a voice? We did. In this anniversary episode, I reminisce about my experiences, the surprises, the lessons learned, and the growth that has marked this year long experiment.
If you've ever been curious about the nuts and bolts of creating a podcast, this episode pulls back the curtain on the tools, resources, and platforms I use. Plus, we're opening up the discussion about future guests on the show, waiting to hear from you about who you'd love to hear. All of your actions have ripples. Don't go back to sleep. xo
Welcome to a conversation with myself about the purpose of submitting your work to film festivals. We kick off by rewinding to my aerial dance film, 'Midas Is King', which was hailed at four festivals and bagged two awards at the Women's International Film Festival. But is this all merely a quest for recognition and new audiences, or is there a grander scheme at play?
Our discussion takes a turn towards the contentious issue of artist compensation in the domain of fine and performance art. Drawing upon my experience with 'Blood Meal', a collaborative piece with digital artist Katina Bitsicas, we delve into the challenges of national showings and installations. Simultaneously, I'll troll societal norms that stigmatize artists for pursuing compensation for their work.
Should our art exist solely for its own sake, unburdened by the shackles of awards and publications? This is an invitation for all artists to introspect: is mere existence of your work enough for you? As you navigate your own artistic path, we encourage you to contemplate: what is your 'enough'?

Ready to step up your performing arts game? Here's your golden ticket! Join me as I peel back the curtains and share a treasure trove of performing arts tips and tricks. Imagine never having to worry about your fishnet stockings looking ridiculous or skin irritation from wearing them. That's right! I'll guide you through modifying fishnets and let you in on a skin-saving secret - pantyh
Profit first calculator example- this is the system I use (thanks, Sandi!) for allocating my income into different accounts to keep my life running smoothly. This is also why, when I ran out of money this summer, I still HAD money in different places to use.
Sandi York, Fit Money Coach- fantastic free resources here on her Instagram! 10/10 recommend working with Sandi if you get a chance.
Creatrix: unleash the Muse- mark your calendars! Applications open for Creatrix, the retreat experience, Friday Oct. 13th (Friday Oct. 6th for patrons!) Follow this link for details!
Ever had one of those summers where you just felt like not working? Yeah, so did I and guess what, the results are in. Amidst the Halloween frenzy, I'll be reminding you about the importance of double-checking those gig contracts. Remember, never assume that fundraisers and nonprofits are meant to be donated performances.
Speaking of value, let's dive into a topic often side-stepped by us creatives - finance. I once feared the mere sight of QuickBooks, until I met Sandy York, my accountant. She unveiled the world of self-education in finance, and how empowering it can be. We delve into this crucial topic, busting the myth that artists can't manage money. Also on the roster is an exciting update on the launch of Creatrix applications for patrons.
Join me as I recount the trials of an extreme bodybuilder's diet I once adopted in the pursuit of visual perfection for a performance. The resulting dehydration wasn't just scary - it nearly sabotaged the show. Note to self- the objective for a bodybuilder is. not. the. objective. for a high-yield athletic aerial act. Seems obvious in retrospect, I was blind to it in the moment.
In episode 47 of Audacity Works, we're going to challenge the status quo, examining the loaded implications and the undeserved hierarchy the labels of "professional" and "amateur" have built in our world. Let's shed light on why these labels are less stigmatizing in sectors like sports, and come to our own conclusions. I also wanna take a second to decouple 'professional' from its accrued connotations of moral superiority, technical skill, and commitment.
I'd also like to celebrate the amateur artist, hobbyist and the recreational artist, acknowledging their immense contribution to the arts spectrum. This episode is an invitation for us to redefine these labels autonomously, eroding their oppressive power and recognizing the inherent value in all forms of artistic expression.
Welcome to my second Buffet episode! When I get great questions I want to answer but I don't have necessarily 20 minutes to devote a whole episode to each topic, we get a Buffet.
Today's Buffet includes: - Ageism in circus, and what to do when you're at the top of your game but are still hungry for something more - Flow state, and accessing this state during an injury - The episode concludes with a surprising twist as my friend Chris pitches in an unexpected question about witchy stuff
The episode: For anyone who has contemplated pivoting away from a conventional career path and stepping into the realm of full time freelance weirdo, feeling judged AF can come with the territory. I want to dive in to this head on, on the request of a very Audacious alumni who is experiencing this now.
We'll unpack what's happening and offer some alternative ways of looking at the conundrum, as well as giving you some actionable advice for when you're navigating judgment from others.
In the course of this episode, we plunge into the emotional whirlpool that accompanies physical injuries. It's not just the body that needs time and care to heal, the mind wrestles its own battles. Often, the emotional struggle of feeling ‘less than’ before an injury outweighs the physical ones.
I'll give you some suggestions for altering your perspective during these little jaunts through Mordor, I hope they serve you well.
Currently right in the middle of ho-hosting the Aerial Serpent retreat with Kristina Canizares at Sweet Retreats, Mexico- so sustainability is on our minds a lot
Kristina's goal exercise rating the access we had to time, energy, community, and facilities 6:30
When we are consistently failing to live up to our expectations, we create a hostile relationship with our creative practice 8:00
Sustainability is boring. No wonder we prefer to set spectacular spectacular goals for ourselves, that's more exciting- buuuuuut 9:00
"Expectation is resentment under construction" -Al Anon quote 15:12
Are your goals humane enough that you can operate inside of them with grace, even when circumstances are not the best case scenario?
If you're constantly failing to meet the mark, your efforts might not be the problem. The mark might be the problem. 17:00
Are you selling yourself short as an artist? Are you pricing yourself out of your market? So many questions, so few actual numbers. We're faced with this hard-hitting question in today’s episode. We confront the discomfort and spill the truth on the controversial issue of performing for free or at a low cost, a plight all too familiar to many artists. Unpack the potential harm of underpriced performances, why it's pivotal to understand industry nuances, and empower yourself with the right questions to ask.
Navigating gig life and differentiating between community, regular, and private events can be daunting, but understanding these nuances is instrumental in setting an appropriate fee.
Can morning pages be done in the afternoon, or even at night? Can you do them incorrectly?
Drawing from my own experiences with morning pages, a journaling exercise introduced by author Julia Cameron in her acclaimed book The Artist's Way, welcome to my soap box about the flexibility of this practice—it doesn't have to be a morning ritual for everyone, and there's absolutely no one-size-fits-all approach. We delve into my journaling adventures, from how I create an inspiring ambience for writing, to choosing a pen that sparks joy. We'll tackle the common ennui that occasionally strikes during morning pages. Uncover creative strategies to reignite your interest for this practice, from altering your writing schedule to penning letters from different perspectives— even from your own body parts.
Some tales from the trail on DIY fundraising, and different ways to get funding for your creative work. You need three things to create work: vision, resources, and skill, and it's my opinion that the work is best served when it's approached in that order.
Funding belongs the 2nd of those three facets. We know we need it, we know when we don't have it, so how do we approach going for it without feeling like a douchebag?
