Creating a District Snapshot: Essential Steps for Long-Range Educational Planning08 Nov 202100:25:13

Welcome to "Ask the Tech Coach," a podcast for Instructional Coaches and Technology Integration Specialists.

In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan discuss creating a district snapshot and why this is a place to start as you begin to make long-range plans for where your district is heading.

If you would like to be a part of future podcasts and share your thoughts, please contact the podcast. We would love to have you join the show.

Creating A District Snapshot
  • Creating a roadmap for your district employees to follow over the coming years has to begin by deciding who you are at the beginning before you proceed to where you want to be.
  • Think Before Picture & After Picture beginning with the before and your District Snapshot
  • What is a District Snapshot?
  • Document, report, graphic to showcase where a district is at any given time
  • Simple or more complicated as you desire or dependent on the information requested
  • How Does A District Snapshot Work?
  • Self-Assessment tool for looking and analyzing data based on specific criteria
  • Data collected from various stakeholders
  • Clear and easy to understand by all stakeholders
  • Creating A Single Focused Question
  • This is the heart of the district snapshot as it is focused on where the district is and wants to go
  • Examples:
  • What is the overall makeup of our school district?
  • How can we properly redistrict our students due to the increase of low-income housing?
  • How do we want to effectively distribute next year’s budget funds across all our school buildings to meet the needs of our Title I students?
  • Formulating Your Instructional Technology Focus Question
  • Create a broad overview of how technology is used (hardware/software) to support students.
  • Examples:
  • In what areas of my school district is Instructional Technology being used effectively?
  • In what areas of my school district is Instructional Coaching being seen as Successful?
  • Is there a correlation between the amount of technology (hardware) funding provided to a school building and the amount of professional development provided?
  • Who Should the questions be addressed to?
  • Normal coach/teacher interactions; coach/admin interactions
  • Central Office staff
  • Non-school personnel
  • Students
  • Parents
  • How Can Your District Snapshot Support Instructional Coaching?
  • What is Beyond the District Snapshot?

How Do You Determine What Type of Coaching Your Teachers Need?07 Jun 202100:25:45
In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan discuss a question from our Coach’s Network as we explore how coaches determine the type of assistance that teachers need. • Are you a Tech Coach or looking to become one this year?

The TeacherCast Tech Coaches Network, is a brand new Professional Learning Network designed specifically for Tech Coaches and designed to provide weekly support for all Instructional Coaches. Click Here to Join! Tech Coach Question of the Week I am moving into a new Instructional Technology Coach position (part-time) for next year.  We are a rural school district in Maple, WI with two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.  My job description is basically to help teachers use the district issued technology effectively. Now, my question. How on earth did you gauge who and where your support is most needed at the beginning of the year?  I know some people have done survey's and I know most of our staff here at the elementary level well enough to know their tech needs.  Any other ways to gauge how to help teachers at the beginning of the year? I know most of us are focused on closing out our year - I am, too!  I just want to be ready since I only work part-time next year and I want my time here to be beneficial to our teachers! How Do You Determine What Type of Coaching Your Teachers Need? Administrative Conversations Set up frequent conversations with your administrators to learn their goals and what they would like to see happening in the classrooms. Staff Surveys A basic staff survey at the beginning of the year is nice but ... keep it brief and to the point. Classroom Walkthroughs Coaches should be popping into classrooms on a regular basis to see what is happening, lend a hand and build a rapport with both teachers and students. Co-Teaching One of the best ways to help build trust with teachers is to create a lesson that can be taught together. Staying Positive Always remember that the job is not easy and one that is difficult both physically and mentally. Staying Alert Always keep your eyes and ears open for the next situation that might present itself to you. Be available Forming the relationship to assist them with some little things at first in order to build trust and be able to observe what some of the needs might be. Lunchtime / Break-Time conversations  - (Or Sometimes Gripe Sessions) Be an active listener; sometimes gripe sessions can really be a call for help.  “I can’t believe we have to share our lesson plans with the principal” - showing them how to effectively use a Shared Drive or shared folder in google would be a quick and practical way to get your foot in their door. Normal Observation through day-to-day interactions, what comes up in meetings, etc. Keep a private journal of what you see and observe in the classroom. Not Coaching One of the best things you can do is to just be a friend to your teachers.  Sometimes the best coaching opportunities come out of non educational conversastions. Contact the Podcast!

  1. Stay consistent with your teachers.
    • Continue popping your head into classrooms
    • Keep creating Newsletters
    • Ease pain points – curate resources for summer planning

  2. Do more listening than coaching as the year comes to a close
    • Be open to listening to new ideas and teachers’ reflections on how things worked (or didn’t work for them)

  3. Play the long game ... it’s not about this year ... it’s about next year
  4. Keep feeding them relevant tips that they need at the moment – cleaning/archiving files, learning management system, etc. Have it ready for when they ask.
    • Sticky notes
    • Videos re-introducing yourself and what you can do to help them
    • Encourage the teachers to take some risks that they normally wouldn’t take in the regular timeframe of the year and day to day instruction

  5. Keep yourself fresh / refreshed on edtech topics that are relevant to your teachers and school/district. You can’t stay relevant to your teachers if you, yourself, are not up to date!
    • TCOY –Take Care Of Yourself - Digital Learning Playbook

  6. Focus on efficiency – tech to make end of the year paperwork more simplified
  7. Help create memorable end of year activities (portfolios, video montages, etc.)
  8. Provide summer learning opportunities, offer asynchronous opportunities too!
  9. CELEBRATE teachers and leaders wildly – social media, school based emails, YES cards, giveaways, Google Meets where they can just have a space to speak
  10. Continue to co-teach with teachers, offer your time and support for new ideas they wish to try! (VR, Minecraft EDU, etc)
  11. Keep building your team, community, and supports for teachers/leaders

  1. Have a great Title and Description
  2. Know your audience & tailor your presentation to them and not over their heads.
  3. Know your own limitations before signing up for presentations. Do you have time? Do you have something valuable to contribute? Is it the same, normal how-to session or is it something more engaging and innovative?
  4. Be aware of the timeframe and plan accordingly to keep your participants engaged. Lecture/Discussion/Hands-on
  5. Slides / Visual aids should fit the presentation and complement the content, not be the entertainment. Keep in simple and engaging not over the top.
  6. Be willing to share with the audience - slides, handouts, something that they are able to take with them for reference or a template for implementation.
  7. Be confident in what you are doing and in knowing the content you are presenting. Show and demonstrate your experience.
  8. Be familiar with hardware that you will be using and what is being provided.

What does Co-Teaching Look Like from the Teachers Point of View?29 Mar 202100:39:55

In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan welcome guest co-hosts, Sarah Kiefer and Laura Counts to share how they have formed a fantastic working relatsionship in their school building that has led to outstanding student achievement.

Laura is a 4th gr teacher and showed her students a photo of kids sitting around a radio learning back in the early days of polio. This sparked an unplanned activity! Laura asked Sarah to come in and go over pros/cons of various tech tools and then supported a couple of students who chose to do a newscast & needed to use a new program in order to accomplish what they set out to. A very successful co-teaching tech plan.
