ADU 01268: RaceDayQuad vs FAA, ruling out as judge uphelds Remote ID – what next?03 Aug 202200:21:23
Judge uphelds remote id in RaceDayQuad vs FAA ruling. What implications does this have for pilots and the industry? In today's episode we talk about the outcome of the RaceDayQuad vs FAA on Remote ID as judge upheld remote id. We go over the implications of the ruling and what this means to pilots and the industry at large. RaceDayQuads sued the FAA in April early 2021 and filed the arguments on August 4, 2021. After subsequent replies and arguments, The Department of Justice (DOJ) and RaceDayQuads argued in court in front of a judge and a ruling was made by the judge based on the arguments. To know more about history of the case and relevant details listen to our earlier podcast on the topic. Today's episode is brought to you by Drone U mapping events and classes. We talk about some of the new changes we have made to our mapping classes and course curriculum to stay updated with some of the recent trends in the mapping industry such as going over new products for geo-referencing, geo-tagging, GPS and more. Visit our Drone U events page for more details on classes and courses. In today's episode we discuss all the implications of the ruling and how it can potentially impact the pilot and the industry and how we can proceed further in light of the ruling mandating the continued remote id policy. We discuss about compliance and security, the availability of pilot information publicly and if its easy for the average citizen to gather pilot data from drones flying in the area. Tune in today to get all the updates from the ruling and to understand its implications. ADU 01266: How can I fly in clear airspace when DJI has it designated as a red zone?02 Aug 202200:13:34
What options do pilots have if they intend to fly in clear airspace near a designated DJI red zone? Today's question is from John, who is working on a project to conduct flight missions around a prison that is no longer functional yet is classified as a red zone by DJI. John would like to know if Pilots have options to fly in such clear airspace and what they would need to know prior to flying. We start off today's show by discussing 3 options that pilots have to effectively fly over red zone while also discussing the approximate times it would take to seek permission. Our option 1 is to apply to FAA to void a red zone and the steps required to seek clearance while flying over such areas. Drone U members have exclusive access to our step-by-step instruction video on applying to the FAA to void a red zone. Option 2 is to apply for a QEP (Qualified Entities Program). The Qualified Entities Program (QEP) allows Government and Public Safety entities to have their DJI drone's altitude and geo-fencing limitations unlocked and as a certified Part 107 pilot you could seek clearance under the program for conducting flights in red zones. Option 3 is to visit drone-hacks website and navigate through the process of negating geofencing abilities on your drone. Drone-hacks can assist pilots with differing firmware to ensure removal of geofencing abilities. We also discuss an additional option of using drones other than DJI that do not possess geofencing abilities and would allow flights irrespective of DJI's red zone. In summary we discuss the quick and easy steps available for pilots along with the timeline for each option that pilots can pursue to seek permission / unlock the DJI red zone. That's it for this quick podcast episode. Tune in for more great shows to come. ADU 01265: What is the go-to drone since we can’t find the Phantom anymore?29 Jul 202200:27:20
As the Phantom drones near their end of life, what drones are good alternatives for all round performance? We're back to recording podcasts after a hiatus and in this episode we address a long standing question in drone pilots' mind on what drone would replace the Phantom drones, that have captured every domain of the drone industry through it's value for money and performance. Today's question is from Gary, who would like to know what drone is the go-to choice for pilots now that the Phantoms are being phased out and second hand drones are expensive. We start off today's show with why the Phantoms have become renowned for their performance and versatility and the features which make them very suitable for carrying out flights and missions in different domains such as mapping, inspection and overall videography while also discussing its ability to support 3rd party applications. We then discuss why the Mavic 3 is not a good replacement (at least as of today) and what limitations the Mavic 3 has, in comparison to the Phantom. Our suggestion for the go-to drone to replace the Phantom is the Inspire 2 and we delve into the details on why the Inspire 2 is best bang for the buck. We discuss its features and camera options using which pilots can add value to their deliverables. In our last section we go over our recent move to Colorado and appreciate the welcoming nature of the people that live here. ADU 01264: What’s the deal with hand catching drones?25 Jun 202200:16:52
Should you perform hand catching of drones? Are there practical benefits to it? Or does hand catching just amount to inviting unwarranted injuries? Hand catching a drone - You've possibly seen pilots doing this or seen a social media post of a horrific injury while performing the act but is hand catching really required? Should pilots follow them or is it an unsafe practice that should be avoided? Today, we answer everything we know about hand catching a drone and we would like to thank Tom who's question today is all about hand catching and if there are any benefits to performing them? Today's question is brought to you by the PROPS program, a program specifically designed, and caters to the needs of groups of pilots. It is ideally meant for team of pilots, and organizations that want multiple pilots to progress through their learning curve together. Props allows teams to monitor progress, manage and document learning and ensure a larger audience are progressing together. We start off today's show discussing why hand catching is a practical and effective process for drone pilots to follow and what process should pilots follow for performing hand catching. We discuss how hand catching can be very effective in certain flying conditions and environments and how drone pilots can perform hand catching. We then discuss details of principles that are involved with hand catching. Commonly called the 90 degree rule, we discuss the relevance of rotating a drone by 90 degree and expected outcome of such practices. Next we discuss if hand catching is pertinent to all drones and if all drones behave similarly to hand catching process and how newer drones have different firmware that can cause a different reaction to hand catching practice. Lastly we discuss about safety incidents arising from hand catching and how pilots can steer clear off them by following simple safety precautions. Towards the end of the podcast, we new courses and classes coming up for Drone U members and the new learning that pilots can obtain from these courses. ADU 01263: How to handle situations where I am told I am flying illegally?25 Jun 202200:16:13
When approached by a government official claiming that I am flying illegally how do I explain myself? What precautions should I be taking to address such scenarios? Today's podcasts is flight regulations and airspace approvals. Our question for today is from Frank who was questioned by a government employee who claimed Frank was flying illegally around a lake and dam. Frank had used all FAA's tools and ensured he was well within the law but Frank would like to know how pilots can address such scenarios and what are the best practices for Pilots to follow to stay within legal requirements of drone flights. We answer Frank's question by first addressing the ambiguity of whether drone regulations can be enforced by local governing bodies and what current Drone laws state. A strong emphasis in our response is on the recent status of drone regulations across the US and how laws are being enforced. We discuss the role of local agencies and responsibilities that Drone pilots should be aware of to steer clear of drone law enforcement. We then discuss if it's a good idea for pilots to fly around lakes and dams, discussing the laws that surround VLOS and its relevance to drone flights and how pilots need to embrace VLOS requirements for conducting safe flights. We also discuss the specifics of what constitutes critical infrastructure in the US and how agencies can work together to define and regulate laws around critical infrastructure. ADU 01244: How can I determine the pain points/needs of an industry?11 Feb 202200:22:36
As pilots what are some of the best ways to know a market and understand its pain points? Today's show is about all the efforts that pilots need to put in to understand an industry better so to allow them to provide better service to their customers and increase their overall effectiveness for their business. Today's question for the day is from Robert who would like to know some ways by which he can enhance his knowledge about an industry and stay better informed about the problems faced by the customer. We discuss if there is one single way to understand an industry or domain in the drone industry and if pilots can actually use one common methodology to identify customer pain points. While we do agree there is no secret sauce to do this, we address today's question by what it really means to understand customer pain points and how pilots can go about doing this. An integral component of understanding customer pain points involves actually having conversations with customer and we address how pilots can effectively performing this action in a domain of their choice while also highlighting how these help an individual better their skills, their business and their overall outlook in front of their customers. We then provide Paul's experience of interacting with an inquisitive individual who came across on the field to enquire about the drone industry and we also share Drone U's Kevin who started his drone business and how he was able to scale up to taking up projects for Amazon just by interacting and learning from his customers. ADU 01241: Do I really need to use sophisticated GCP’s02 Feb 202200:17:42
What benefits does using sophisticated GCPs bring? Can naturally occurring markers replace them? Today's show is all about understanding the use and importance of sophisticated GCPs and their importance in ensuring quality deliverables. Our question for today, from DeWayne, is about using sophisticated GCPs. DeWayne is observing his co-workers and team rely more on naturally occurring markers to make do with their mapping missions. He would like to know if they are indeed effective and if pilots can get away using naturally occurring markers or stand-in markers such as paints and pinstripes A very valid question and we answer the question by first addressing the need for conducting effective geo-referencing in mapping projects. We then dig deep into the use of sophisticated GCPs and the rules that pilots need to consider while carrying out missions. We then list out all the possible errors that can occur in georeferencing due to poor selection of GCPs and how it can impact final deliverables and follow it up by looking into effective ways to deploy GCPs and when pilots can actually use naturally occurring markers.
