What if one of an institution’s greatest assets is the place it belongs to?

In this conversation, Joanna Motion and Nik Miller explore the idea of an “endowment of place” and what it can mean for philanthropy. Drawing on their work with institutions around the world, they discuss how a strong sense of place can give organisations greater confidence and distinctiveness, broaden the community of people who feel connected to them, and unlock different motivations for giving.

They also consider the responsibilities that come with claiming a place: how to be for a place rather than simply of it, without becoming parochial or slipping into a narrative in which the institution casts itself as the solution to a community’s problems.

In this conversation, Nik Miller and Rodolphe Gouin discuss what organisations need to work through before deciding to collaborate. What does each partner actually want? What will they gain, and what might they have to compromise on? Are their values compatible? And what needs to be agreed about donors, prospects, responsibilities and risk?

They argue that clarity isn’t a sign of mistrust. Asking the difficult questions at the outset can create the conditions for a partnership to flourish, and help organisations decide when they may actually be better off going it alone.

Case for Support: What do donors really want from your philanthropic story?

What makes a philanthropic story compelling to a donor? Drawing on More Partnership’s analysis of conversations with donors, Tim Johnson, Laura Phipps and Vérane Castelnau discuss what they have heard about the stories organisations tell when seeking philanthropic support.

They explore why clarity and distinctiveness matter, how organisations can establish credibility and demonstrate impact, and what makes a genuine case for why support is needed now. They also consider who should tell the story, how to pitch ambition at the right level, and why organisations don’t need to present themselves as the sole answer to a problem.

And they argue that a case for support should never be the finished conversation. It provides a starting point for listening to donors, understanding what matters to them and finding where their ambitions and the organisation’s meet.
