  • And then Dave discusses the Late Jim Shooter's remembrance of the Wolveroach affair.
  • MJ Sewall (who's writing a biography of Dave Sim, I know, Jeff Seiler is spinning in his grave...) has a question that Dave has a sorta answer to.
  • Dave remembers the late Jim Shooter and their relationship, including how Dave's portfolio of Marvel characters "Original Sim" appeared in Marvel Fanfare #25. And how the planned Cerebus/X-Men crossover came to be.
  • Dave gets follow-ups to the July/August Please Hold from our resident transcriptionist  @SanctuaryofReality
  • Dave answers questions and comments from  @creative_fey  .
  • Dave answers Rodney Schroeter's question.

Please Hold For Dave Sim 7/2025 II: The Revenge!12 Jul 202501:11:48

Geez, you thought it was over just because it was the first Saturday of the month?

Fool!

"Having no working phone or fax, the idea of recording these as a live conversation between Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow on the first Thursday of the month has pretty much gone out the window. Now, Matt sends whatever questions he's gotten up to Dave once a week, and Dave records answers and sends those files back. And then Matt edits them into these things forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and..."

Dave talks alot about the things I sent him. I dunno, writing these synopsizes is a pain...

Please Hold For Dave Sim 11/202408 Nov 202402:13:12

In this, quite possibly the Last Episode of Please Hold For Dave Sim ever published through this @#*!ing piece of shit "service" (@#*! SPOTIFY!), Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow discuss:

  • Dave's favorite comedians
  • Peter's Place
  • A Cerebus rarity from 1979
  • Living in a Swing State
  • God
  • Dave reprinting his work from Comic Art News And Review (CANAR)
  • Joe Matt
  • Steve Peter's New Sparky Kickstarter, featuring signed and unsigned variant covers by Dave and a new 8 page story with art by Dave
  • Manly's "team-up" with Jack Kirby on a piece for Steve's New Sparky Kickstarter
  • Dave wants to "team-up" with Jack too for Steve's New Sparky Kickstarter
  • An Officially Licensed NECA Cerebus Action Figure?
  • Dave remembers Jeff Seiler

And I don't @#*!ing rmember, @#*!ing Spotify deleted the earlier funnier version of this description which is why this is probably gonna be the last audio version of these things since I @#*!ING hate Spotify and have LITERALLY NO DAMN reason to use this "service" (how can they call it that when they've systematically removed every feature and tool that would make a person want to deal with these useless @#*!S...)

Please Hold For Dave Sim 10/202405 Oct 202402:18:33

  • Friend to the Blog: James Banderas-Smith has a new Kickstarter

  • The Upcoming TMNT/Naruto crossover and Cerebus' Naruto parody
  • The difference between stealing, aping, copying, homage, influence, and spoof
  • The cover to Cerebus Volume #8: WOMEN

  • Is Dave getting Canadian Pension and Old Age Security payments (the Canadian version of Social Security)

  • While you wait, email Matt, and get a FREE digital glamourpuss collection

ANY page: Cerebus the Aardvark, glamourpuss, Strange Death of Alex Raymond (including the pages Dave has drawn in the past year), Cerebus in Hell? (I would suggest sending in a list of pages you're interested in, and include alternates in case Dave sold the page you REALLY want years ago.)

  • What Dave wants for the Cerebus Archive from Steve Peters' "Ghosts of Rabbit Hell" Kickstarter campaign.

Please Hold For Dave Sim 3/202408 Mar 202402:10:54

Please Hold For Dave Sim 7/202506 Jul 202503:26:21

Having no working phone or fax, the idea of recording these as a live conversation between Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow on the first Thursday of the month has pretty much gone out the window. Now, Matt sends whatever questions he's gotten up to Dave once a week, and Dave records answers and sends those files back. Which means it's easier to produce the video version on the YouTube then it it to make the audio version on the Spotify...

This month, Dave talks for around three and a half hours. And this isn't even all the questions, so there will probably be a part two...

Please Hold For Dave Sim 1/202405 Jan 202401:48:46

Cerebus creator Dave Sim returns to once again talk to A Moment Of Cerebus Interim Editor, Manly Matt Dow for the FIRST (of we hope twelve) Please Hold For Dave Sims of 2024.

What da fuq we talk about this time?

  • Dave has some tips for would-be creators.
  • M-I-C-K-E-Y IN-THE-PUBLIC-DOMAIN! Steve asked, Dave answers.
  • Lee Thacker should be involved in a Kickstarter soon, and Dave REALLY likes the art. (Possible Spoilers)
  • Dodger asks about Stan Sakai. Dave asks how to pronounce "Usagi Yojimbo"?
  • Dodger gets the REALLY. BIG. PRIZE!
  • Zipper has an answer and a guess, he's not even close...
  • Michael Grabowski has an answer.
  • Fernando H. Ramirez found something Dave didn't know...

And Matt talks a bunch about...not...Cerebus...

Good times. Good times...

Holy crow! It's the FIFTH anniversary episode of Please Hold For Dave Sim! Five years of holding. Five years of two dudes talking about a cartoon aardvark. Over sixty hours of AMOC's Manly Matt Dow trying to make Dave Sim laugh. Five years with a lot of answers to a lot of questions. Like these:

  • Matt remembers Jeff Seiler's car.
  • Dave skips Lank Stephens because, oh god the questions...
  • VGDC Maroro asks about:
  1. Judith Bradford
  2. a sort of "list of exercises" for one to learn how to ink lines
  3. How does one figure out how far one can push the expression of a character until it becomes off-model
  4. How did you go about making the rock-climbing scene from Church & State so heartpoundingly thrilling that it took me all the way to 5 paragraphs of the brick wall that is Chasing YHWH in like 2 days
  5. If you had the ability to draw without any pain in any bit of your arms tomorrow, would you attempt a second magnum-opus like Cerebus was?
  6. What is your take on the ethics of artists using an AI trained nonconsensually on the work of other artists as a tool to help them?
  7. Does Glenn Vilppu's technique work for cartoon characters that were constructed two-dimensionally like Fred Flintstone rather than ones made of 3D forms like Mickey Mouse?
  • Dodger wants to know about Dave's thoughts on Marvel & DC's B/W reprint lines.
  • Steve has inquiries about Jeff Seiler's copy of The Cerebus Guide to Self-Puplishing.
  • Margaret has one of them notebook questions.
  • Zipper wants to know if he has a rare misprint.
  • Christon has questions about Cerebus #1.
  • Philip Fry has questions about two unnamed guys from the first 13 issues.

  • Wayne Thomas has questions about Deni Sim's signature.
  • Aaron Wood makes us hungry...
  • And has questions about Superman.

It's another two hours and twenty minutes added to the pile of content we provide you...for free.

Please Hold For Dave Sim 10/202307 Oct 202302:09:08

Dave Sim, and Manly Matt Dow REUNITE, again, for the October 2023 Please Hold For Dave Sim!

This month's collection of wonders include:

  • Dave Sim's remembrance of Cerebus Super Fan Jeff Seiler (1962-2021) gets to the weird confluence of: Karaoke, Covid lockdowns, Yusuf Islam, Neil Gaiman, Sandman, The Book of Genesis, Surah 12 of the Quaran, a riddle, and, a cat.
  • David Birdsong's Kickstarter for MarvelManVark
  • Dave answers a question from his YouTube Channel, from Lank Stephens, about collaboration between a foreground and background artist. (Dave promises this might be an ongoing discussion...)
  • Dave answers a question from Dodger about inkers.
  • And Dave's thoughts on Wally Wood.
  • And Matt stuns Dave with Tomb of Dracula Artist edition, and Batman Noir: The Dark Knight Returns. (Which Dave suggests anyone interested in inking should check out.)
  • Dave and Matt answer Jason Trimmer's question about the resemblance between President Biden and Mary Hemingway.
  • And Dave answers a hypothetical (I KNOW!)
  • Dave answers Christon's question about Zipatone/Letratone.
  • And Dave answers if he's doing conventions or signings.
  • Michael R. (of the FAMED Easton, Pennsylvania Rs) explains Reed Waller's birthday
  • And Dave answers Michael's questions about The Last Day widescreen remarque catalogue.
  • And Chris W. has a question that's more a "Matt" one than a "Dave" one.
  • And a message from Little Orphan Aardvark for her Secret Society. Set your decoder wheel's to the Steve Ditko's Mr. A code!

It's two hours and nine minutes of Please Holdedy goodness!

Please Hold For Dave Sim 9/202309 Sep 202302:30:05

So, due to a technical error, the first few minutes of this month's Please Hold For Dave Sim were accidentally erased. (My phone restarted, and the file is unsavable. NORMALLY there's the back-up, but I forgot to push the button... "Mistakes were made.")

This month Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow discuss

  • I dunno, the audio was lost
  • Matt remembers Jeff Seiler: Parrothead
  • Dave mentions some things Matt doesn't know, and didn't take notes on...
  • Dave talks about Hot Wacks, again (previously discussed in January 2019.)
  • Dodger asks about changing art styles
  • The Origins of Spore Batvark and how Zipper fits in to it.
  • Whatever happened to Harry Kremer's comic and art collection?

  • Michael R. of Easton PA, and the terrible vengeance that will be visited upon him

Good Times! Good Times! Well worth the two and a half hours of your ever dwindling life you'll never be able to get back...

"Dapper" Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow return, once again, for their Monthly phone chat that Manly records and edits together and posts here.

We call it Please Hold For Dave Sim.

In the April 2023 Please Hold, Dave and Matt discuss:

  • Can Matt refer to a Strong. Independent. Female. As a... "broad" (Manly sez: "Dude, she invites four underage dudes to move in with her within hours of first meeting them. Broad is one of the NICEST terms I could use...")
  • Dave remembers Cerebus Fan, Jeff Seiler.
  • A BIG "Thank You!" to the 608 people who gave $88,508 to fund The Waverly Press & Aardvark-Vanaheim’s Remaster of Eastman & Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Number Eight Featuring Dave Sim’s Cerebus the Aardvark. Thank you, again.

  • An announcement that "Mistakes were made." regarding the Remastered The Last Day.
  • And Manly christens the new version "The Last Void". (See, the spine reads "Form & Void", even though it's the Remastered The Last Day, as we said, "Mistakes were made." It's either "The Last Void", or "Form & Day"...)
  • Dave announces the beginnings of a plan to sell copies of the Remastered The Last Day, Signed by Dave AND Gerhard, with a Last Day Cerebus head sketch Remarque in silver on the cover by Dave, on CerebusDownloads.com for the low low price of $XXXCAD (we're still working out the price. BUT, the first Day will have a discount for loyal listeners/readers. More details as Dave and the Cerebus Braintrust make them up...)

So... Dave Sim currently has no working phone, or fax machine.

"That means no more Please Hold right?"

Sorry Imaginary Spotify listener, who I didn't even realize lives rent free in my head, as they say "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds". Which means, Dave and I found a workaround. I email the Qs to the printshop, and they print them out, Dave's assistant picks them up, and then Dave records his As on his professional recorder (so the sound is REAL good!), has it sent to me, and I cobble it all together.

"Wait, no Matt-meandering-gobbledeygook? That's gotta make this pretty short..."

You'd think that, but the Audio runs two hours and thirty-five minutes...

This time: (I haven't listened to these fully, so I can only go by what I sent Dave)

  • Dave discusses a box of stuff Matt Sent
  • Then a PRE-Hold For Dave Sim, of things I would have just faxed up as they came across my desk, but I sent to be printed the same day as this month's questions
  • Then the official questions:
  1. Matt remembers Jeff Seiler
  2. Dave remembers Jackson "Butch" Guice and Peter David
  3. A message from Zolastraya
  4. Fernando Ramirez's next Cerebus short story
  5. @creative_fey AKA April C.'s next batch of questions
  6. Jesse Herndon's Please Hold transcript for July 2024
  7. Zombie Cerebus covers
  8. "CEREBUS ARCHIVE - FIRST RELEASE" gold seals
  9. the indicia on issue #6
  10. the day Elvis and his mom died and Madonna was born
  11. Strange Death of Alex Raymond original art portfolios?
  12. This month's Please Hold strip

That's what I asked, but, again, I haven't listened to the whole thing, so no idea what Dave may have skipped/cut out.

Let's find out together!

Please Hold For Dave Sim 3/202303 Mar 202302:46:47

Once again, Aardvark-Vanaheim President Dave Sim and A Moment of Cerebus Interim Editor Manly Matt Dow take three-ish hours out of their busy days to answer reader questions, drop some news, and generally "shoot the $#!*" in a lil' sumthin'-sumthin' we call Please Hold For Dave Sim.

In this, the THIRD installment for 2023, Dave and Manly discuss:

  • Matt remembers Cerebus fan, and Dave Sim Superfan, Jeff Seiler. Specifically that time Jeff nearly cancelled Judenhass and glamourpuss. Good times.
  • Dave answers the first (in what will be a series of questions) from Adam J. Elkhadem, creator of Octave the Artist
  • Then we head to the Big Board to see how the Remastered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 Kickstarter is doing. As of this writing, it's at $35,775 with 250 backers.
  • What music Matt used for the TMNT #8 countdown video he made.
  • Then a deep dive into the can of worms Darrell Cook opened in the Cerebus Faceybookee group, wherein he talks about Jaka's molestation as a child, and his suspicions that Lord Julius was the culprit. This goes on for a while...
  • MJ Sewall asks about the Cerebus Radio Show.
  • Matt & Dave do a bit for Escape Pod Comics.
  • Michael R., of the Easton, Pennsylvania Rs, asks about the "apposite biblical reference" of Jaka and the red wine at the end of Rick's Story.
  • Michael Grabowski asks about the Cirinists adulation of Jaka in Going Home.
  • And then three questions about the Remastered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 Kickstarter all came in AT THE SAME TIME. What. A. Coincidence.

And more! (Maybe. Probably. You got the time, listen and find out for yourself...)

Please Hold For Dave Sim 2/202304 Feb 202302:37:01

Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow return once again to answer submitted questions from listeners and generally just BS for two and a half hours.

This time:

  • Dave remembers Jeff Seiler with a prod from Matt and MJ Sewall
  • Dave remembers Phil Seuling
  • Dave remembers Bob Burden and the making of Cerebus #104
  • Dave remembers MJ Sewall's book Where Monsters Dance About
  • Dave remembers who was on the Cerebus Freebies list circa 1996
  • Dave remembers being a "letter hack" in the 1960s
  • Dave remembers how to write a cliffhanger
  • Dave announces that a year from now, February 2024, you'll be able to buy a ALL NEW Cerebus comic that he's writing AND DRAWING!
  • Dave learns there was a SF novel in 1953 titled Pirates of Cerebus
  • Dave remembers the Cerebus: 6 Deadly Sins portfolio

And

  • Matt spoils his Spawn Cerebus in Hell parody
  • Matt spoils his surprise to the AMOC bullpen
  • Matt decides to send his cheap P. Craig Russell art book to Dave
  • Matt generally says the quiet part out loud more than a person should...like normal.
Please Hold For Dave Sim 1/202306 Jan 202301:42:30

Holy @#%& Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow AREN'T done doing this every month!

"And there was much rejoicing"...

(HEY! I didn't hear any rejoicing from that guy in the back... You're on the List pal!)

In this, the first month of the year of our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty-three, Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow discuss:

  • A couple of "shout outs" from Dave Sim
  • Matt remembers Jeff Seiler and "Two Women Grinding"
  • When's the Remastered Last Day a'comin'? (Not soon, unfortunately...)
  • Dave Sim the Barbarian? Fictional AND Real...
  • Larry Wooten and his new Art acquisitions (I hate him.)
  • Helen and Alex Raymond's 1934 Christmas Card
  • Loren Gray is living the Fanboy dream (and I hate him.)
  • The PLETHORA of original Art that's reached Heritage auctions.
  • Dave's dialogue for Mick, Keef, Richard, and Harrison.
  • Mungu mkono.

With answers for: Kyle Pinion, Travis, Larry Wooten, Michael R. of Easton PA, Steve Peters, and YOU (if you wondered about how Matt is rearing his kids...)

Please Hold For Dave Sim 12/202203 Dec 202201:42:48

Well here we are, the FINAL Please Hold For Dave Sim. Of 2022.

Or, EVER.

I dunno. I just send the questions and record the answers, I'm not in charge of anything.

Anyway, this time Dave and Matt talk about:

  • Jeff Seiler's Kansas City Royals annual (Let's hope it went to KC or Cooperstown...)
  • Barry Windsor-Smith's Frost Giant's Daughter
  • Harry Truman and the Sunday funnies
  • If this is the FINAL Please Hold, or not?
  • What Dave would change in Cerebus if he could
  • What books Dave recommends
  • If Dave would ever try a Cerebus-like project again
  • An idea to make Dave some of that money we’ve heard so much about
  • The contents of Cerebus volume 1, and what's missing and why
  • The Form & Void remastered campaign
  • What to do with your collection to keep your non-fan kids/heirs from missing out on cashing in when you cash out
  • And if this is REALLY the FINALE, or not?

If this IS the last one, we had a pretty good four year run. And that means there's an end to what Jesse Herndon has to transcribe, and the book of transcripts can get sketched out in Matt's head.

(I wonder if Gerhard is gonna be busy in January?)

Please Hold For Dave Sim 10/202214 Oct 202202:15:06

A week late and Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow return with the best Please Hold For Dave Sim since the last one!

In this one:

  • Steve Peters (who has a new comic on crowdfunder) remembers Jeff Seiler
  • Hal Foster tries to get a Sunday page from Milt Caniff (in 1939) (And Dave and Matt discuss the letter Hal sent)
  • Dave doesn't believe Austin Briggs kid's story about Alex Raymond: SPEED FREAK!
  • Mike(MJ) Sewall wants to know what Dave's plan is after he's dead (Dave, not Mike.) Eddie. Eddie is the plan...
  • Michael R. of Easton, PA wants to know about Dave's collection of Canadian Price Variants
  • Margaret Liss has a question about Dave's notebooks. (She always has questions about Dave's notebooks...)
  • And Rick Norwood (of the Comics Revue Norwoods) asks about Politics and Prince Valiant...
  • Which leads to a question Dave got in the mail from Travis H. In. The. Mail!
  • All that and how Dennis Kitchen was almost sorta kinda (if you squint) Matt's Daddy! (Not really...)
Please Hold For Dave Sim 9/202203 Sep 202201:57:36

Oh geez...what DIDN'T Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow talk about?

(Seriously, I didn't take good notes again.)

  • Jeff Seiler and "Madame X", and that time Jeff travelled to Canada to get his *really good* stuff back.
  • Archbishop Posey and the crowd of Cerebus characters in the Afterlife in issue #300.
  • Supposition on why most North American comics are printed in Canada.
  • What Foreign Editions of Spawn #10 are in the Cerebus Archive.
  • Where the script for Spawn #10 ended up (and the one for Spawn #9. Manly's got that one and will show you for a dollar...).
  • Dave's wrist.
  • Drew Hayes and Poison Elves.
  • And tattoos.

It was a fun little nearly two hours...

Please Hold For Dave Sim 8/202206 Aug 202202:00:17

Dave Sim and Manly Matt Dow once again do the Please Hold For Dave Sim thing.

This month:

  • Dave remembers Jeff Seiler
  • Dave DOESN'T have any art in Psycho Annual #1 (1972) (Don't believe Margaret Liss' LIES!!!)
  • Pablo Marcos (the guy who ACTUALLY drew the thing Margaret's website says Dave drew)
  • Why Dave identifies as a "cartoonist"
  • Will Dave release his Matisse "The Unknown Turtle" original art cards as a regular card set?
  • Turtles #8 (Aardvark-Vanaheim Edition) coming in January from *SURPRISE SURPRISE*
  • *YOU* TOO can get a Cerebus Sketch from Dave for...well, the more you pay, the better your sketch...(Last guy's getting it for a grand or two...)
  • Will the Waverly Press be doing a Hardcover premium edition of The Last Day

And all the rambling fun from Matt you've come to know and loath...uh, "love"...

Please Hold For Dave Sim 7/202209 Jul 202203:02:18

I've done one of these a month for the past couple of years. If you've listened to any of them, you know the score.

If this is your first one, Dave Sim talks to Matt Dow (that's ME!) for a couple of hours and answers questions sent in by fans.

If you got your question in to Matt before Wednesday night, he sent it to Dave, and Dave answered it.

Go to your room!)

Dave Reads the Gospel of John01 Mar 202202:35:14

Dave Sim reads the Gospel of John.  As he said in a recent fax:

I also recorded all of John's Gospel and Sean is now editing it into an audio mp4. So If you're REALLY SELF-CONSCIOUS about this, all you have to do is arrive early, find a spot outside where your local City Council, State Assembly or Congress is about to sit, put in your earbuds, and LISTEN to John's Gospel, thinking the whole time "I'm OUTSIDE with God and God's Word. I align with THIS and not YOU. May God judge between me and thee.”
