Weekly Airwave - Don't Wait - The Halt08 Mar 201900:04:11

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.

This week's track: Don't Wait by The Halt. What do you know - another track out of the US. This time, The Halt: a rock group that formed in 2017 featuring Neil Matharoo (from the band Soundstatues) and Andrew Schwartz, both from Brooklyn. They don't have any albums on Jamendo, but they do have four singles at the time of recording. Don't Wait is a good mix of alternative and grunge, leaning more on the alt rock spectrum. You can buy their music at the halt dot band camp dot com.

Be sure to check out alternative airwaves dot com for more podcasts and music reviews. See you next time.

#32 - Back in the Habit10 Sep 201100:36:25

I'm finally back with a new podcast!  It's been since the end of July since I released a new episode, and for that I am deeply sorry.  But the move is complete, and I have some brand new stuff for you.  Today I was just winging it a little, but I plan to put some more work into the blog and get some exciting things happening.  Okay, enough talk - onto the track listing!

Direct Download (archive.org)

** Yes, I know I said in the podcast that Paper Tiger was Canadian.  I don't know where that came from, but on my computer that's how I have it marked down.  They are in fact from the Netherlands.

#31 - The Dog Days of Summer27 Jul 201100:46:02

""Dog Days" (Latin: diēs caniculārēs) are the hottest, most sultry days of summer.  Dog Days can also define a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather." -- Wikipedia

Your eyes are not lying! I'm going away this weekend, so I thought I would release the podcast a few days early.  It's a little long this time around, but since it's been three weeks since the last episode, I figured nobody will mind!  Some great music in there, starting off hard and fast and ending on a similarly strong note.  Except for one or two songs, everything in the podcast has been featured on the blog in the last three weeks. Direct Download (42 MB) - Length: 46:02

  1. Prepare to Meet Thy Broom! - High Like it's 1989 - This song is one of the many awesome funky songs I found last Thursday.  That mixtape is still on its way.
  2. MC Frontalot - Spoiler Alert - I really mentioned the infamous MC in passing, but I haven't ever featured his songs on the podcast so I thought it was about time.
  3. Hot Fiction - War of Attrition - Awesome band, played them before - this song just fit perfectly for the set.
  4. The White Soots - If I Go - great bluesy rock band that sometimes channels The Black Keys
  5. The Polymorphines - The Clean and The Dirty - Great Ottawa band that is having a CD Release party this Saturday!  Go, if you can make it.  Details are here. *NOTE: I may have mentioned the EP is for free download.  It is not; it is however only $4 US! Very good price.
  6. The Search - Distant - awesome song, really reminded me of the 80s when I heard it.  The rest of their album is much like this.
  7. Ellus Bellus - Sticks, Stones and My Bones - I think this band has just about the best band name and the best album name on this entire podcast.
  8. Gunther Brown - Minnesota - If I'm to believe the lyrics, Gunther Brown really don't like Minnesota.
  9. Bella Ruse - Heart of Everyone - Played them simply because they're from Minnesota.
  10. Not From Georgia - Caroline - Great band, plays catchy folk/pop music and licenses everything under Creative Commons.  Followed me on Twitter, so I checked 'em out.
  11. These Animals - Four to the Floor - Great song at the end of their EP, it's also up for a remix contest of sorts at Aaahh Records.

Thanks for listening / downloading!  I hope you enjoy your own dog days of summer.

#30 - Summertime09 Jul 201100:38:30

Alternative Airwaves is now hosted on archive.org!  Eventually I'll be porting all the older podcasts over there so they can all be found in one spot.  Here's the original post for the podcast.

Hopefully the fan I had on to cool down the "studio" didn't cause too much background noise. I had a fun time putting together this playlist, and listening as I recorded. I guess if you read the track listing, the "secret cover song" won't be so secret!

Direct Download (via archive.org, 35.3MB)

Playlist (38:30):

  1. Keyboard Rebel - Northern Sherpa - From the album Pop Grenade, available from Aaahh Records
  2. The Laureates - Cooler Birds - Cool Chicago band that uses a lot of distortion; available at Free Music Archive
  3. Silver Rocket - Crank it Up - Italian band on a German netlabel - talk about multiculturalism! Available at Free Music Archive
  4. Mouth's Cradle - Front Porch, Back Porch - 7-track free preview album released via FrostWire; full album available online.  Very good music, you should download it maybe.
  5. Early Adopted - Thank-You - First heard of this group via FrostClick. Very good hip hop, cross between Eminem and Lupe Fiasco.
  6. Tense Kids Second Law - From the album Oh! Idaho, this is a fun little number.
  7. Roar - I Can't Handle Change
  8. Allison Crowe - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) [Eurythmics Cover] - Allison Crowe has done a number of covers, and her version of Hallelujah almost made it into The Watchmen.  Do a quick search on YouTube to find more.
  9. Videogame Orchestra - Island in the Sun (Belmont's Revisal) - This track is from a Weezer tribute album with a twist - all songs are done using 8-bit sounds from various video games.

#25 - Back to Scheduled Programming30 Apr 201100:32:07

It's been 4 weeks since I last did a "regular" podcast - what with last episode being a themed podcast (which was a lot of fun to do) - so it feels good to be back in the groove picking out new music.  Some great stuff in today's episode, including - finally - a track from my brother's band.  Keep reading for the playlist.

  1. Sick of Sarah - Overexposed
  2. Flat People - A Year From Now (Where's the Emotion Baby)

#24 - Themecast #1 - Swingers06 Apr 201100:27:28

The podcast this week is a little different than what most might be expecting - as I mentioned in the last episode, I've been planning a couple of theme podcasts.  Welcome to Themecast #1!  All the music in today's show is swing music.  This has resulted in a slightly shorter show actually, because it was slightly difficult to find music to fit the bill - well, music that I liked.  I think I found some great stuff; listen for yourself and decide!  Playlist follows below...

Weekly Airwave - All I Need Is You - Semmuel01 Mar 201900:04:18

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.

This week's track: All I need is You by Semmuel. This track features some dark synth sounds and I think fits right alongside today's Top 40 songs. Semmuel is a hip hop / R&B artist based out of the U-S. From Jamendo: his music career began in 2017 when he signed with Graphic Entertainment Music, and eventually released a solo song "Athena" in June of that year - it was featured as Jamendo's artist of the month.

Be sure to check out alternative airwaves dot com for more podcasts and music reviews. See you next time.

#18 - New Year22 Jan 201100:30:54

The first new podcast of 2011 is finally done!  I thought I picked some really awesome music to kick the year off on a great note.  The standard playlist with links to artists' websites is below, but first a couple of links I mentioned during the show:
- International Sock Monkey - I mentioned this in the blog earlier in the week; it's the free music blog put together by the members of Bella Ruse.
- 23 Seconds - A great netlabel from Gothamberg, Sweden.
- Aaahh Records - another netlabel, similar in style to 23 Seconds.

Playlist:

  1. The Womb - All I Want to Do is Find Love Before I Die
  2. Pinkle - Fractals
  3. Emerald Park - The Commonfield
  4. When I Was 12 - Vanilla Vodka

#17 - Slightly Less Embarassing21 Dec 201000:37:26

Last Saturday night I made myself a nice cup of coffee with eggnog (I swear, there was no rum involved) and settled in to do what looks to be my last podcast of 2010.  Things are just going to be too busy in the next couple of weeks, though I MAY end up doing a surprise 'cast next week if I get the free time.  You just never know!

I have an announcement to make about a podcast coming up in January 2011, but I'll save that for a separate blog post.

There were some nice highlights this episode, including a really cool MJ cover.  Here's the playlist.

  1. HoboTwang - Alone in the House
  2. She Swings, She Sways - What I Wouldn't Do [NOTE: I learned just now that this band broke up]
  3. Paper Tiger - Sandy
  4. Josh Woodward - Revolution Now
  5. Joey Kneiser - Bruised Ribs
  6. The Transisters - JB is Dead
  7. Loudspeaker Alliance - Revolt
  8. Jens Wennberg - Tux
  9. InAshton - Will You Be There
And backing music was provided by James Edwards.
I said I would do a "Creative Commons News" recap on the blog, but that feature is really quickly turning into new CC releases (which is OKAY).  Here are some quick stuff I pulled from various sources.
  • XYZ by DJ Leq - It's just a single, consisting of the original mix and a shorter version.  Kinda catchy!  Just released today.
  • 2010 by Hypnotic Crow - Another dance album, this one is also just plain catchy.  It's a full-length album that consists of mainly electronic-based music.  While it was released today, it is apparently a compilation of older unreleased tracks by Hypnotic Crow.
  • Intercontinental Music Lab Goes to War - Intercontinental Music Lab - The name's a mouthful, but the music from this UK outfit is pretty good.  I'm not sure how I'd tag it - it's a mix between pop, punk, rock, and alternative rock.  I guess "alternative rock" is the best fit here.

#16 - Never Again01 Dec 201000:27:40

I recorded episode 16 of the podcast last night, but only got around to uploading it this morning.  So, that's also why the blog post is late.  Anyway, the title thankfully does not refer to "I'm never again doing this podcast" but more so "I'm never again singing on the podcast" but you know what they say in An American Tale, never say never!

Side note: I got to 50k this year in NaNoWriMo!  Read about it on my other blog, here.

Running time is I think 27:40.  A bit short because one of the songs wouldn't play.

Track listing

  1. NanowaR - Stormlord of Power
  2. Convicted Killer Scientists - Mas Hypochondria
  3. Ghune- First Project / Wanderings
  4. Girl Talk - Make Me Wanna
  5. The Dead Rocks - Nicotine (played during Creative Commons News segment)
  6. Liam Stewart - Sixteen Words (did not play due to unknown error, but thought I'd link to it anyway)
  7. The Very Sexuals - Wrecked This Century
  8. Fatblueman - Fat Blue Christmas Swing Medley
  9. Stephen Gower - Jingle Bells (Horrible Version)

#15 - 20lb Sounds09 Nov 201000:30:21

Finally, another episode of Alternative Airwaves!  I've been pretty busy with NaNoWriMo this month, but I found time this evening to get a podcast recorded.  I even did some writing while I was putting the show together!  All in all, a successful evening.

Track listing:

  1. Bella Ruse - Complicated Rhythm (from their upcoming album out December 13)
  2. Sonic Real Estate - Rocking in a Free World (live acoustic track)
  3. Dan Lynch - Nano Song
  4. 20lb Sounds - Redemption Song (excellent Bob Marley cover)
  5. The Moose Jaw Twins - Fly
  6. Jens Wennberg - Welcome to 1984 (from the album of the same name)
  7. Chuck D - No Meaning No

My apologies for the very delayed Blog post for the latest podcast.  You see, I've been quite busy at work, and there was a wedding I went to, and...well I was busy.  But it's been up on iTunes for just under a week now, so maybe you might like some links to the artists I mentioned?

That's about it!  Don't forget to leave a comment about BEARDS.  Because they're awesome. <img border="0" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AlternativeAirwaves?d=yIl2AUoC8zA"> <img border="0" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AlternativeAirwaves?d=qj6IDK7rITs"> <img alt="" height="1" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AlternativeAirwaves/~4/A_goAF1peyg" width="1">

  1. The Rest - The Short Night-Strangers on a Train
  2. The Rest - A New Pair of Jeans [Acid Wash Mix]
  3. Going Commando - Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots
  4. Joey and the Instapunks - Zoombie
  5. ARCTIC - War of Ideas (Live at Zaphod's)
  6. Sweet Mother Logic - David Copperfield

Weekly Airwave - Boomerang - HoneyChrome22 Feb 201900:03:28

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.

This week's track: Boomerang by HoneyChrome. Boomerang is a great pop track, released in 2018 by an American artist, based on Brooklyn N-Y-C. I find it really reminiscent of early 2000's pop, with a bit of eighties flair mixed in. It's a fun, short track and well worth following to see what he comes out with for 2019!

Be sure to check out alternative airwaves dot com for more podcasts and music reviews. See you next time.

#11 - SOULED OUT03 Aug 201000:34:17

Episode 11 has a funky soul groove going for it - thanks to the featured artist, SOULED OUT and their No Name Funk EP.  It is currently available on iTunes but you can also download it directly here if you don't use that particular program.

Track Listing: CEREALES KILLERS - Feel It SOULED OUT - No Name Funk EP JAMES JR - Let's Stay Together

Here's the translated portion from Souled Out's website that I read (and I stress it's improperly translated from German):

Ingredients, such as the tight rhythm section, horns, and fat are to be understood by itself is refined the whole thing with a strong vocal part and surprising arrangements and interpretations.  Detailed recipe follows.

#10?? Really?  That's really good!  Well, this is the promised Part 2 of the Creative Commons Sampler.  There are a few rough edges in the show this time around, because I was distracted while reading about ASCAP vs Free Culture.  Yeah I think I've said enough about it, and I don't want to go there right now.

  2. This Co. - Figure it Out
  3. The Dixie Flyers - The Auctioneer
  4. Ray Wylie Hubbard - Portales

#9 - Canada Day Podcast01 Jul 201000:35:31

Good morning everyone, and Happy Canada Day!  So far mine's been pretty great - I went to bed sick and woke up feeling fine this morning, and to discover I have some juice in the fridge that I didn't remember making.

I've had this podcast waiting in the wings for a week now, and I've been very excited to release it.  It is 100% Canadian, and features some really great artists that I found mostly on Jamendo.com.  Here's the playlist - now go out and enjoy the day!  I might find myself in downtown Ottawa today, which depends entirely on whether I feel up for biking down there.  If you're looking for some things to do today, check out this Canada Day Guide from www.ottawastart.com.

#8 - CC Sampler Part 114 Jun 201000:38:52

I finally got to do the podcast this weekend!  Life has been very busy: sudden funeral 8 hours away, a softball tourney this afternoon (B Pool Champs!!), hockey tonight...well there was a lot.  I finally finished the final mix tonight, which required very little effort thankfully.  I stumbled in a couple of places but I felt the podcast fit together well, and there was some very cool music played.  Speaking of which, here's the playlist with artist info

  1. The Dead Rocks - One Million Dollar Theme
  2. Brad Sucks and The Hip Cola - SOS
  3. Brittani Louise Taylor - Everything's Gonna be Okay
  4. Carbon/Silicon - Make it Alright
  5. No, Really - Molten
  6. Jamie Rumley - Anywhere But Here
  7. InAshton - It's Ok...It's Ok
  8. I Am Not Lefthanded - Boats (Swept Away)
  9. Julandrew - It's Easy
Part two should be coming this week - most likely to be done again on the weekend when I have some more time.  I was going to record it at the same time as Part 1, but I wasn't able to get to it.

#6 - Not South American Banjo Ska07 May 201000:37:42

Here it is, episode #6!  Unfortunately, it is not the "South American Banjo Ska" genre my brother wanted, but instead is Celtic Hip Hop - coming from Oakland, California, no less!  Here are the show notes:

  • The opening theme is as always a modification of Brad Sucks' song Making Me Nervous
  • The opening track was called Drunken Kitchen Kisses, by The Destroyed Room, which I heard about thanks to FrostClick.
  • Wikipedia movie summaries really are awesome; check out the one for Twister
  • Today's feature artist: Beltaine's Fire; their album is The Weapon of the Future
  • Tomorrow I have a meeting with the prosecutor about a bylaw ticket concerning my dog, Hank.
  • The last band was one I mentioned last week - Glossary.  Their album is called The Better Angels of Our Nature

#5 - The Notes and Scratches23 Apr 201000:26:58

Episode 5 is here!  Late due to last night's marathon Sens game, but it is here!  Some abbreviated show notes: - Check out The Notes and Scratches at http://www.notesandscratches.com/ - I was having a tiny bit of mic trouble, so my apologies for that - but I eliminated most of the popping p's!

You can also download it from iTunes :)

#4 - Paper Navy09 Apr 201000:28:57

Episode 4 is here!  Albeit late!  But I sat through a thunderstorm while recording this, risking losing all my work in the process.  Today's podcast features Paper Navy, and their album All Grown Up.  Here are some notes:

  • The opening track was called Here Comes the Rain by Wilson Noble
  • My poor dog was freaking out for the duration of the podcast; I dedicate it to him
  • I recorded this with my bizarre set up again - using two different Skype accounts between two computers.
  • I apologize for the popping p's.  I am going to try to fix these next episode.
  • The closing track was called Heroines, by Diablo Swing Orchestra.  Read their mythology at their official website.  Seriously, check out their music.  It is nuts.  I think I will have to do a podcast for them alone one day.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.

Undercover comes from the 2018 album Blue Electric Eyes (be sure to check out that track as well). You can find their music on jamendo dot com or neon niteclub dot bandcamp dot com.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.

This week's track: Astronauts by Parker. Here's a description of the artist and the track from Jamendo.com: Parker is a band from Miami, Florida, comprising of Reed F. Gaines and Carter Vail. The pair met at the Frost School of Music in 2015 and began making music later that year. Parker will be releasing their next single, ‘Astronauts’ on November 16th under Dreamtime Palace, with an EP to follow in early 2019.

<pre>Astronauts is a futuristic synth song about being stuck on the moon. Featuring high falsetto voices & the warbling sounds of the MICROKORG, 'Astronauts' is a love song about missing Earth and the isolation of space. </pre>

#110 - Battle For The Net12 Dec 201700:04:43

This is a short episode today - one that comes to you on "Break The Internet Day". There's only one song in the show - the rest is me talking very briefly about protecting Net Neutrality.

As a Canadian I don't have a direct voice in this fight, but if you're in the US, you might! Instead of listening to me talk about it, there are a couple of podcasts on the issue that say it much better.

Almost Educational - Episode 147 - "FCC Me"
