I, Dr. Ben, have observed Dr. Susanna act in courageous ways over the past few weeks. When I reflected this to her, she was inspired to share her process with it in this week's Wisdom Wednesday episode of the Podcast.
Sometimes we have strength and clarity to overcome a challenge, while other times we may be overcome by insecure thoughts.
Like any "good feeling," it is human nature to desire a feeling of courageousness, especially when we feel most distant from that feeling.
Naturally, more thoughts and judgments only tend to further distance the feeling of courage we desire!
In today's episode, we reflect on the feeling of Courage and the accompanying insecurities that we move through.
We've got to admit... it's really quite saddening to see people spending tons of money on supplements in a never-ending hope to feel better.
The quest for a pill or potion to make us feel better is not something new, but rather strikes the very core of basic human needs and desires.
We all want to feel as healthy and vital as we can for the least possible energy expenditure.
But, here's the thing... it's so blatantly obvious that supplements, just like pharmaceuticals, manage our symptoms... at best! Sure, they can be less toxic, more gentle, and therefore safer than pharmaceutical meds, but they still completely miss the mark when it comes to true healing.
We know by now that true healing comes from developing a strong foundation of health over time. That means being more mindful of the short and long-term consequences of our moment-to-moment thoughts and behaviors.
In this week's episode, we share our passion on this topic, hoping to inspire some clarity and action for your pursuit to more optimal health!
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Supplements are called "supplements" because they supplement the foundation of health (food, air, water, movement, rest, state of mind, connection with nature)
Supplements may address a nutritional deficiency, but what is causing that deficiency in the first place??? (Vit B12 and Vit D are generally exempt from this conversation)
There is nothing wrong with taking a pill, but we must be aware of their inherent limitations
When necessary, supplements are more efficacious when used ATOP a strong foundation of health
Generally speaking, our money and energy can be much better invested into the quality of food and water we choose to consume
A medical diagnosis is a way for doctors and insurance companies to streamline policies and protocols.
You are not your diagnosis.
The symptoms or diagnosis you experience is not the problem, but your body's answer to the problem.
Rather than getting wrapped up in and identifying with a symptom or diagnosis, we can get curious about the body's messaging while staying connected with infinite potential.
In today’s podcast episode, the conversation spans both personal and professional experiences with medical diagnoses to find the freedom and health that is always available.
#305 | MM - What You Should Know About Stevia & Monk Fruit
23 May 2022
00:23:55
There are all sorts of “natural sweeteners” on the market, but we’ve got questions… How natural are they? Are they a healthy substitute to other sweeteners?
First off, our preferred natural sweeteners are very minimally processed; honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar. Things like agave, cane sugar, rice syrup, etc. tend to be much more processed and therefore “empty calories.” Then there are the real garbage products like corn syrup and beat sugar (which are GMO, toxic foods) as well as synthetic sweeteners like aspartame, surculose, saccharin, etc. which can be toxic to the nervous system.
Today we wanted to unpack a couple of other products that get slapped with the “natural sweetener” label - those derived from Stevia and Monk Fruit. We discuss the pros to these, the cons, and the bottom line recommendation.
It’s easy to group monk fruit and stevia together in this conversation since they (a) both come from whole plant foods (b) have naturally occurring super-sweet “glycosides” and (c) are processed to extract the glycosides to create “zero-calorie” natural sweeteners.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Stevia is a leafy shrub while monk fruit is a guard that grows on a vine
Both have naturally occurring glycosides that provide a sweet taste (setvioside and rebaudioside A or reb A in stevia and mogrosides in monk fruit)
They are naturally sweet in their crude form, but also have bitter tastes as well
These plants are processed through dozens of steps (up to 40 or more) that include bleaching and extraction via methanol and ethanol before getting the final glycoside extract
Both stevia and monk fruit products are 200 - 300 times sweeter than sugar (sucrose)
The products are indeed “zero-calorie” since they mainly contain the sweet constituent and no other nutrition - therefore they have no impact on blood sugar
Studies show stevia can have some detrimental effects on the gut microbiome (rat studies)
Processed sweeteners such as these can dull sweet receptor tastebuds on the tongue while creating a supraphysiologic dopamine response to perpetuate sweet cravings and food addiction
Life tends to feel chaotic. In fact, you could say that chaos is a defining feature of life!
Nevertheless, it can feel like we’re on our own, and no one or nothing has our back.
Before we know it, we can find ourselves amidst a "thought-storm" as we like to say with whirling judgments and expectations.
In today’s podcast episode, Dr. Susanna shares her story of moving through a chaotic period of life, starting just 5-months ago or so. She shares how her experience throughout such difficulties offered so much more trust, strength, and peace on the other side.
Between 10-30% of the global population experiences allergic rhinitis, otherwise known as "hay fever," which is the most common presentation of environmental allergies.
Honestly, I thought allergies were even more prevalent than this. The wide range is likely due to the fact that allergies tend to come and go, which can make them even more difficult to understand and get a handle on.
Nevertheless, prescription and over-the-counter allergy medications, such as anti-histamines, are some of the most common pills to be swallowed in our world today. Even with such meds, it can be difficult to manage these symptoms... until now!
No, no, no... there aren't any quick fixes to allergies. In fact, reversing allergies is a prime example of playing the long game to allow and encourage the immune system to find its innate balance.
In a nutshell, the "allergens" that trigger an immune response aren't bad and we shouldn't have to fear or avoid them. The goal is to retrain and nourish the immune system to offer more resilience.
We cover lots of science and strategies for managing and reversing allergy symptoms in today's episode.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Managing allergy symptoms (+ cold/URI) naturally with steam inhalation, netti pot, and alternating hot/cold compress
The allergy/anti-histamine herbs and nutrients like nettles, butterbur, eyebright, quercetin, Vit C, NAC
Reducing the load of environmental triggers by removing shoes indoors, washing sheets regularly, dusting/vacuuming, HEPA air filter, etc
The importance of balancing Th1 and Th2 immune responses - resolving system inflammation, avoiding immunogenic foods, gut healing, exposure to bacteria/viruses
Understanding the stress response and its role in the immune system
Our cells are constantly eavesdropping on our thoughts and emotions.
This means that the moment-to-moment shifting of states of mind and emotion directly impact our physiology.
This is pretty darn cool and empowering!
Our mind can be our greatest ally in health. A lack of understanding, however, can create significant obstacles at the level of thought and emotion.
The way the body-mind is wired is known as pscho-endo-neuro-immunology. This is the connection between our psychology (state of mind) with the endocrine system (hormones) nervous system, and the immune system.
We are wired for survival, though chronic or repetitive activation of the sympathetic nervous system "stress response" contributes to suppression of vitality, our innate healing potential.
In today's episode, we discuss this interplay between brain and body to empower you in leveraging mindset to create more health.
#301 | MM - Plant-Powered Athletic Performance & Endurance
09 May 2022
00:29:48
A healthy and vital body is best capable of high-level athletic performance.
Athleticism and endurance have always been important to me, Dr. Ben. I've never competed at an elite level or anything, but it feels good to be fast, strong, and capable of doing hard things. Therefore, I do my best to better my performance and continue feeling great with a main goal of simply enjoying the experience of my body's full potential immersed in nature.
In today's episode, I share my personal relationship to strength and endurance training, including, of course, nutrition, supplementation, recovery, hydration, sleep, and more.
If you are hoping to build strength and endurance in your life endeavors, I hope this helps to inform and inspire. If athletic pursuits feel like a far-off fantasy given your current experience of health, know that your healing body is capable of more than you may realize!

Sure, all sorts of things are constantly happening in the apparent outside physical world - relationships, world events, loss, trauma... "Shit Happens," as the old saying goes.
But, if our experience comes from within, why is it so commonplace to feel the victim of circumstances? How can we truly break free from the "victim consciousness" and boldly embrace complete responsibility?
These are some of the questions discussed in this week's Wisdom Wednesday aiming to bring a new level of freedom and clarity to the world we all manifest.
As you probably already know, inflammation is the cause of essentially all chronic disease - but what causes inflammation?

Some highlights from today's MM episode...
The many chronic conditions caused by inflammation and why "anti-inflammatory" meds/supplements don't address the cause but only manage the symptom
How inflammatory response is not your body being damaged or broken, but evidence of it's self-healing potential
The 3 primary causes of inflammation and the 5 signs/symptoms inflammation causes
The 5 ways whole food plant based eating eliminates inflammation
The places here inflammatory toxins might be sneaking into your life...
I remember the first time I wandered through the "self-improvement" aisle of the book store. I found myself there not to "be better," but because I felt inspired by the words in some of the books.
The whole self-improvement industry is still booming to this day, and for good reason! People want to feel good. And it feels good to share material that helps others feel good. This is the sort of infectious "good energy" we are all naturally drawn to!
If we lose sight of the forest through the trees, we are likely to end up on a perpetual path seeking clarity, more good feelings, or anything else we feel lacking.
I've been struck many times by the profound insight that self-improvement is a farse. That's not to say we all don't have the potential to feel better more of the time, but the way we approach that desire is a slippery slope.
It's helpful to get curious about some basic questions like: What does it mean for me to be improved? What is in the way between where I am and my highest self? Where do my good feelings come from? How can I experience my untapped potential?
These big topics and ideas are explored in this week's Wisdom Wednesday episode! :)
The fresh growth and new life of springtime naturally invite cleansing.
Dandelions sprouting, asparagus shooting, flowers budding... it's like nature is trying to send us a message...
We know that all whole plant foods are nutritious and healing in their own ways, but in springtime, we've got some real superstars bursting through the ground!
We just wrapped up our Spring Cleanse where we enjoyed an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies of all sorts. In today's Medicinal Monday episode we highlight some of our all-time favorite cleansing veggies coming to the scene in spring.
The stars of the show: dandelion, artichoke, and asparagus.
We share some recipe/food prep insights, general cleansing tips, and other fun facts concerning these favorite spring veggies.

We live in the information age with an exponential surge of data, ideas, pictures, words, voices, and stories flooding into our consciousness around the clock.
This is pretty exciting! Over the course of a few hours to days we can tap into data stream and quickly become proficient in any number of skills - gardening, cooking, construction, pet grooming - we can learn practically anything! Well, besides taxes... haha
With data comes opinions. This is the best way to grow tomatoes, that is the best way to bake a potato, this is how you caulk the sink, and of course, eating plants is the best way to nourish your body!! (or is it???)
In today's episode, we talk about how we can interface with the influx of information in a grounded and empowered way, never losing touch of our true source of wisdom and inspiration.
Grains have been vilified in more recent years, predominantly by modern Paleo Diet ideology. However, evidence suggests that humans have been consuming varieties of grains for at least 100,000 years!
Of course, 100,000 years is still little more than a blip in the timeline of human history, but if one thing is certain, it is clear that past actions and behaviors do not inherently equate to the healthiest practice in the present.
When people talk about grains in the diet today, most people immediately imagine a loaf of bread, a bowl of pasta, or cupcakes. Like refined fats or sweeteners, processing grains strips away so much of the fiber and nutrients leaving mostly "empty calories" that shouldn't ever be considered "health-promoting." BUT, in their most natural and intact state, the conversation around whole grains completely shifts.
In today's episode, we hope to dispel any confusion around consuming grains in your plant-based diet.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Grains are defined as the seeds of a grass, though there are also many "pseudo-grains" that are widely consumed
Most think of wheat, oats, rice, etc - but there are in fact hundreds of varieties of whole grains (amaranth, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, corn, farrow, freekeh, millet, quinoa, rye, sorghum, spelt, teff, wild rice - and more!)
Gluten is a protein found in only 3 varieties of grains - wheat, barley, rye - most gluten sensitivity is likely a result of chemical exposure from conventional agricultural practice
Whole grains contain bran (B vitamins and fiber), germ (protein, minerals, fats), endosperm (carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals) - refined grains generally just contain endosperm
INTACT whole grains are best - processed grains (even processed whole grains) increase surface area thereby diminishing nutrient density and fiber content
Diversifying intake of intact whole grains is best - brings in unique fibers, minerals, and phytonutrients
Do you ever find yourself coming up with an excuse for what you did or didn't say or do?
I do. And it never feels very good...
Each time I make an excuse, I feel my soul cringe a bit. I now recognize that feeling, being out of alignment and integrity, is an opportunity to step into full responsibility.
In this episode, we share our experiences of making excuses for how we show up with ourselves and others and explore the new territories beyond perpetual excuse land.
#293 | MM - Healing Eczema with Diet and Lifestyle
11 Apr 2022
00:26:58
Eczema is the most common chronic skin condition that so many people just “deal with.”
Otherwise known as atopic dermatitis, its incidence has increased 3 fold (!!!) since the 1970s. About 20% of children and 3% of adults are affected worldwide with an even higher incidence in the US.
While the majority of children “grow out of” it, the underlying conditions that cause eczema are generally not addressed which sadly means that one chronic condition is often traded for another…
The conventional approach is simple! Just a slathering of steroids. Of course, this doesn’t address what’s going on beneath the surface which can lead to further chronic symptoms and conditions of all sorts.
In today’s Medicinal Monday episode we discuss the underlying cause(s) of eczema and how our diet and lifestyle have the power to reverse these nagging symptoms.
The conversation is a little different depending on whether we are talking about childhood or adult eczema, but the relevant overlap is important!
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Eczema can be a sign of digestive vulnerability, or "leaky gut," which leads to over activation of GALT hyperactive immune response
There is also definitely a skin-liver connection with the toxic burden often expressing itself through the skin
Fiber-rich WFPB eating supports optimal microbiome and digestive health as well as bringing many direct anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties
Hydration and stress are also hugely important factors for skin and immune health
Being mindful of topical stressors is key - chemicals in soaps, lotion, laundry detergent, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.
#292 | WW - Why We Don't Have a Meditation Practice
06 Apr 2022
00:19:10
Since meditation practices have swept the western world, many may come to believe that meditation is a necessary tool for "enlightenment," spiritual growth, or just mental wellbeing.
While we are certainly not here to suggest that there is anything at all remotely wrong with meditation, we find it helpful to explore what a meditation practice can offer, and why people may experience benefits in health and wellbeing.
As the title suggests, neither of us currently engage regularly in any sort of meditation practice, but that's not at all to say we don't have lots of experience! I (Dr. Ben), held a daily practice of 1-2 hours of meditation per day for at least 5 years with experience in multiple traditions and techniques including extended meditation retreats.
In a nutshell, we share our understanding of how and why meditation is not a fundamentally important technique for spiritual growth and wellbeing as well as the evolution of our relationships with mindfulness as a practice.
For more, deep conversations on the topics of Mind, Thought, and Consciousness come on into Peace on Earth: https://alter.health/peace-on-earth
Some highlights from today's WW episode...
Peace, Love, Wisdom, Creativity, Compassion is the essence of our True Nature - all of us, all the time
Meditation can provide a sacred space to disengage with thoughts and experience the space through which thoughts flow
Thoughts flow through the mind regardless of where we are and what we are doing and we can always, in any moment, bring awareness to our True Nature beyond thought
Some might say a goal of meditation is to be more meditative and peaceful throughout daily life - something we can always access in an instant
Our state of mind in a moment is not a result of external circumstances (practices or techniques) but a result of the thoughts we attach to at a point in time
#291 | MM - Lifestyle Liver Support in a Toxic World
04 Apr 2022
00:32:04
Liver disease is much more common than people realize! Approximately 25% of adults and 10% of kids have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common condition affecting liver function.
... but, there is GOOD NEWS! Liver disease is completely reversible! (before scarring, or cirrhosis, takes place)
Liver disease does not just come out of nowhere (except in rare circumstances of acute toxicity, most often from pharmaceuticals). Liver function becomes sluggish over months, years, and decades of “toxic buildup” from a suboptimal diet/lifestyle.
Toxicity and nutritional deficiency set the stage for a sluggish liver which then has innumerable consequences when it comes to each and every system and function in your body.
Last week, in Episode 289, we talked about “Staying Toxin-Free.” This is hugely important for liver health, but there is so much more.
This week, we dive deeper to understand the amazing design and function of the liver and how to optimize its performance to keep us healthy in this crazy and toxic world.
Spoiler alert... one amazingly loving thing your can do for your liver is a Seasonal Cleanse - such as the upcoming Alter Health Cleanse! Learn more at www.alter.health/cleanse
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
The primary roles of the liver - 500 incredible functions, including detoxification
Some common signs of sluggish liver function (pre-NAFLD diagnosis)
The 5 big obstacles that contribute to liver disease
How your body is like a bucket and what can go wrong that causes it to overflow (express symptoms )
9 powerful lifestyle practices that reverse liver disease (including Alter Health Cleanse, of course!)
Cognitive dissonance means "mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time."
To be honest, I didn't really know what it meant until the last couple of years as I've heard the term used more and more.
It turns out that we all live to preserve our mental wellbeing, and avoid this mental stress. For some, this means avoiding such "contradictory beliefs."
But, we don't need to live in a right or wrong dichotomy. We can live in a way that prioritizes connection, relationship, growth, and learning.
In today's Wisdom Wednesday we explore the human nature of perception and separate realities that always exist and share insights to navigate in the world with a compassionate heart and open mind.
For more, deep conversations on the topics of Mind, Thought, and Consciousness come on into Peace on Earth: https://alter.health/peace-on-earth
Some highlights from today's WW episode...
Every human being has a unique perception, always changing from moment to moment
We, as humans, are not our thoughts or perception, but the consciousness through which we experience our reality
Freedom doesn't come from isolating in an echo chamber and avoiding contradicting viewpoints, but understanding that we, and perceived others, are not our thinking
We can get curious about other perspectives rather than close our eyes, ears, heart, and mind
Life is not about being right or wrong, but connection, relationship, growth, and learning
Environmental toxins are ubiquitous in today's world and often play a central role in numerous chronic conditions.
Staying free from toxicity doesn't come easily... but is it even possible?!
We can absolutely mitigate the toxic exposure by mindfully choosing how we eat, drink, and breathe.
More importantly, we can stay optimally nourished and "cleanse" periodically to flood the body with the precise resources to create the environment for optimal detoxification.
(Such as through the Alter Health Cleanse - www.alter.health/cleanse)
While we discuss all sorts of toxic chemicals like VOCs, herbicides/pesticides, phthalates, endocrine disruptors, heavy metals, and more, the aim of this episode is to empower you with what you need to navigate this toxic world healthfully and gracefully.

Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Various toxins found in food, air, and water supplies and how to avoid them
The 100,000+ unregulated toxins in the environment are largely linked with increased incidence of all sorts of chronic conditions
Where to find the chemicals hiding in body care products and other household items
The role of the liver in the detoxification process and how to optimize its function
How the Alter Health cleanse is designed for liver support and seasonal detoxification
#396 - Diet Beyond Food – What You Consume Shapes Your Life
21 Feb 2025
00:30:54
Your health isn’t just shaped by what’s on your plate—it’s influenced by everything you consume. Food, media, conversations, and environments all impact your mind, body, and energy. In this episode, we explore:
The hidden diet beyond food— how what you consume impacts your body and mind
How mainstream & alternative media shape your thoughts & stress levels
The daily conversations and your environment impact your nervous system
Simple shifts to clean up your mental, physical & energetic “diet”
🔥 Mini-Challenge: What’s ONE thing you’ll change in your daily “diet” in the week ahead?
Plans, expectations... we all have them. And, let's be real... life does NOT always unfold in such a way that is aligned with our human hopes.
This brings to mind the Zen parable of the Chinese farmer...
A farmer and his son had a beloved stallion who helped the family earn a living. One day, the horse ran away and their neighbors exclaimed, “Your horse ran away, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
A few days later, the horse returned home, leading a few wild mares back to the farm as well. The neighbors shouted out, “Your horse has returned, and brought several horses home with him. What great luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
Later that week, the farmer’s son was trying to break one of the mares and she threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. The villagers cried, “Your son broke his leg, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
In this week's Wisdom Wednesday we reflect on the things that have not gone "as planned" and share insights that have led to deeper trust in the universe.
#287 | MM - Why We Generally Don't Recommend Functional Lab Tests
14 Mar 2022
00:19:40
Food sensitivity tests, heavy metal testing, SIBO tests, stool panels, organic acids tests, genetic testing...
If you wanted to, you could spend 10's of thousands of dollars just trying to identify "the problem!"
But, there are a few questions... - Have sensitive/specific are these tests? - What do you actually do with the information? - Will this information actually help me to feel better?
Functional Lab Testing is a HUGE industry! There are TONS of different tests. In general, we don't recommend them.
In this week's episode, we discuss our philosophy of creating health and why going down the testing rabbit hole might not be in our highest good.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Any lab test is only capturing a snapshot of our physiology/biochemistry at one point in time
Information from these tests can send us down a rabbit hole of limited thinking, leading us to feel broken and disempowered
Oftentimes testing results are met with a long list of supplements to push buttons and pull levers in the body
The body's wise messages, symptoms, are generally the best indicator of our health - what good is it to "fix our biomarkers" if we still feel crappy!?
The therapeutic strategy of creating health from the ground up - taking responsibility for diet, hydration, movement, sleep, lifestyle, mindset - supports the body in balancing pretty much any issue
“Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.” - Winnie The Pooh
Patience can be easy to find when we are in a patient and understanding state of mind. But, what happens when we just need clarity or that one simple thing NOW?!
"You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, well, you might find you get what you need." - Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, (The Rolling Stones)
It's funny how when things seem to not be following the timeline we have expected, generally the universe has something even greater in store for us.
That being said, finding patience is not always easy!
In today's episode, we talk out the topic to discover greater ease, peace, trust, and hope for what the future holds.
#285 | MM - The Sweet Truth of Natural Health Gains
07 Mar 2022
00:23:44
There are all sorts of things that can be done to create short-term results.
Caffeine gives an energy boost. Ibuprofen stops inflammation. Alcohol calms the nervous system.
But, are any of these things actually contributing to long-term, big-picture health? Not really.
Our society is obsessed with instant results and constant gratification yet neglects the longer-term consequences of behaviors.
In today’s episode, we break down the mindset shift necessary to create sustainable and resilient health from the ground up.
This is not a glamorous approach to health that sells books and makes money from supplements and protocols. This conversation is simply the humble truth about keeping the body in balance and aligned with nature.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
There is no magic pill and never will be, but that will not put an end to nonstop miracle claims
Health is a journey, not a destination
Body and mind are in constant communication through symptoms and feelings, guiding us to best care for ourselves
It always helps to zoom out to see the biggest picture rather than micromanaging granular nuances
In the end, state of mind matters most - if we are not aligned and invested in live choices, we will fail to experience meaningful benefit
#284 | WW - Should We Be Practicing More Mindfulness?
03 Mar 2022
00:25:00
Is Mindfulness a practice? If so, should we be doing more of it?
These are questions that demand answers!
SO many people subscribe to mindfulness practices, teachings, ideas, or at the very least, meditation apps or the like.
Is engaging with life mindfully something that can be taught? Can we "overdo it" with the mindfulness practices?
In this week's Wisdom Wednesday we unpack these deep topics as we traverse the all-important concept of self-love, acceptance, and peace that is innate to our beingness.
#283 | MM - Plant-Based Calcium for Strong & Healthy Bones
28 Feb 2022
00:19:30
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, with about 99% of it stored to maintain healthy bones and teeth. Many people obsess over getting enough calcium for healthy and strong bones, but it is also required for many other physiologic processes such as healthy muscle contractions, signaling neurological pathways, and facilitating numerous enzymatic reactions.
Like everything in the body, calcium levels are tightly regulated. This is where vitamins D and K come into play. Vitamin D levels regulate calcium absorption and excretion in the gut and kidneys while Vitamin K is responsible for ensuring calcium is properly utilized and stored throughout the body.
When it comes to maintaining strong and healthy bones, calcium is important, but so are all other vitamins and minerals. However, physical activity, specifically weight-bearing exercises, is most important for your skeletal health!
In this episode, we unpack the nutritional science and dismantle the obsession with calcium consumption that so many have been programmed to have.

Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Calcium does not come from dairy/animal products, but from the earth, absorbed by all plants alongside other minerals/nutrients
The calcium requirement in the US is 1,000 mg (1,200 mg for females over age 50) compared to 500-700 mg for most other countries!
Excess calcium can cause calcification of arteries and kidney/gallstone formation
Vitamin D regulates calcium absorption and balance in the body
Vitamin K ensures calcium is stored in bone/teeth and not arteries, kidneys, gall bladder, etc
Calcium is most abundant in dark green leafy veggies (which also have tons of Vit K), but also legumes and intact whole grains
Calcium supplementation can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke
For bone health, weight-bearing exercises and muscle engagement trigger new healthy bone growth
This is where compassion comes into play. Our ability to hold ourselves and others in a space without trying to judge or fix is an innate quality that we are called to more fully embody.
It's always easier said than done and we can only ever do our best.
This makes SELF-compassion paramount, though we can also always use our relationships and circumstances as teachers and guides in the perpetual journey of self-discovery.
In essence, we can choose to embrace the experience for ourselves and others while recognizing and trusting the innate intelligence of an individual and support of the universe.
Limited thoughts are sneaky! They are often hidden in plain sight, but completely out of awareness at the same time...
It's like when a friend points out an exotic bird on a distant tree... you strain your eyes in attempts to spot the bird, meanwhile, another one flies up to perch on a branch just above your head!
Sometimes our focus is simply limiting our perception and we are unable to fully grasp the reality of a situation.
Arguably, this is to some degree the case ALL THE TIME! But, bringing insight to the invariable blindspots can be very empowering... and humbling!
We unpack the mysterious nature of these sneaky limited thoughts in today's episode...
#279 | MM - Nitric Oxide & Healthy Vascular Function
14 Feb 2022
00:22:13
Nitric oxide is the most powerful compound for maintaining vascular health!
Unfortunately, the endogenous production of this potent molecule naturally declines with age... BUT, there is MUCH to do to preserve optimal nitric oxide production and vascular function, and of course, it comes down to DIET. In this episode, we get nitty-gritty and nuanced in discussing vascular performance and the importance of nitric oxide while maintaining perspective of the bigger picture when it comes to cardiovascular health.
In a nutshell, avoiding oxidative damage while loading up on anti-oxidants is KEY... especially alongside a diet of NITRATE-RICH plants that naturally lead to the creation of our beloved nitric oxide molecule.

Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Nitrates occur naturally in most whole plant foods and are not to be confused with added nitrates/nitrites found in processed meats known to create nitrosamines, known carcinogenic compounds
Nitric oxide plays many roles in maintaining vascular health - dilation/relaxation of blood vessels, blocking platelet aggregation (clotting), inhibiting WBC adhesion and inflammatory response
In the blood, the amino acid arginine is converted into nitric oxide, but this pathway declines with age
Nitrates from foods are converted to nitrites by bacteria in the mouth and then into nitric oxide in the bloodstream
Since the dawn of time, human beings have existed in a cycle of judgment - right and wrong, good and bad, us and them. As tribal beings, our survival has depended on not being cast out of society.
Yet our essence is divine. We are all made from the same stuff and share so much despite the apparent differences in physical form.
Being subject to criticism and judgment in more recent times, we have both felt ourselves playing a role in perpetuating the cycle of judgment.
Here we share some deep nuances and growing awareness along with insights and ideas for creating a more harmonious and peaceful world - of course starting on an individual level
Did you know that the lymphatic system is like your body's internal sewage management system?
It's time to understand what's going on in there so that we can optimize its form and function because that is absolutely critical to your health!
The lymphatic system is an essential and hardworking bodily system that is easily forgotten about. However, it plays a vital role in immunity, detoxification, and circulatory health. A backed-up and sluggish immune system can lead to numerous symptoms and medical conditions, so it is definitely worthy of our attention.
In this episode, we review the roles of the lymphatic system, how it functions elegantly to keep us healthy, and ways to support fluidity and resilience in the lymphatics so that we can enjoy even more health in our days!

Some highlights from today's MM episode...
How the lymphatic system works as a security system, protecting us against pathogens, toxins, cancerous cells, and much more.
It also serves as a sewer system, carrying out waste products from cells, and delivering fluid back into the bloodstream.
It plays a crucial role in dietary fat absorption and transportation in the body.
When the lymphatic system becomes congested, it can lead to edema, ineffective immune defenses and detoxification, decreased blood volume, and more.
Keeping the lymphatic system healthy and moving relies on many factors including hydration, movement, nutrition, liver health, and so much more!
But.... not all farts are equal! You probably had a sense (or smell) of that.
Also, some flatulence is associated with excessive bloating, GI cramping, and irregular bowel habits - not very pleasant symptoms that could indicate imbalances in the digestive system.
Here in this episode, we intend to distinguish normal, healthy gas from the more pathologic and problematic gas while also giving you some tips, tricks, and guidance for dealing with gas as you keep optimizing your digestive health.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Gas is the byproduct of fermentation in the gut, a natural part of the digestive process
Different plant fibers (carbohydrates) fuel the various strains of microbes inhabiting the gut - which in tern give us SCFAs (postbiotics - acetate, propionate, and butyrate)
Microbial breakdown of protein (amino acids) creates a whole bunch of other end products (amines, phenols, indoles, thiols, CO2, H2, and H2S) many of which have toxic properties
Proteins takes longer to digest and can contribute to a slower GI transit time (time it takes for foods to pass from mouth to toilet) - 12-24 hours is healthy, 48-96 hours is “normal”
A main cause of foul smelling farts is protein putrification which takes place in the context of high protein diets and a slowed transit time
Fiber-rich carbohydrate diets diversity the microbiome and lead to enhanced SCFA production which is protective against GI disorders and other chronic diseases.
Tips for relieving gas - carminative herbs, digestive bitters, food hygiene...
What the heck are "social norms" and where do they come from!?
How has society come to collectively agree upon follow so many weird things, and why do some feel so much pressure to follow suit when feeling so icky inside!?
As Jiddu Krishnamurti put it... “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”
That is of course not to say that everything society does is unhealthy, but can't we be free to let go of the social norms that no longer serve us???
In this episode, we explore the topic of escaping social norms as Dr. Susanna shares some insights.
Many people hear "Plant-Based Diet" and assume "Soy-Based Diet."
This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact we, Drs. Ben and Suz, do not consume Soy, except for very rare occasions.
That being said, there is TONS of misinformation to dispel when it comes to SOY.
In this episode, we talk about soybean cultivation, the GMO issue, various soy-based products, nutritional facts of whole soybeans, and health benefits/risks associated with eating soy.
We hope this information empowers you to make more clear and confident decisions in your daily nourishment.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
124 million tons of soybeans produced with 94% being GMO!
77% of soybeans are fed to livestock - not humans! (2018 statistic)
Soybeans are a high fat and high protein legume with a complete amino acid profile and loads of nutrients
The vast majority of soy is consumed in ultra-processed foods (soybean oil, textured soy protein, soy lecithin, soy isolates, and more)
When eating soy products it is best to consume organic/non-GMO and minimally processed
Health benefits and hormone balancing effects are due to isoflavones that selectively modulate estrogen receptors
Soy is NOT "estrogenic" and does NOT decrease Testosterone or disrupt hormones in men (or women)
Soy consumption is protective against cardiovascular disease, stroke, menopausal symptoms, and reproductive cancers
Soy sensitivity is mainly due to GMO nature of foods disrupting immune function
Freedom is defined as "the state of not being a slave or prisoner" according to Merriam Webster...
We happen to feel that it is MUCH more than that.
To be fair, that definition is just one of the dictionary's three essential meanings, but let's be real - it's hard to put words on the experience of freedom.
While the topic of freedom has become oddly politicized in recent times, we cut right to the heart of the matter in today's episode.
We start with the wonderfully empowering quote from Viktor Frankl's book, Man Search for Meaning: "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way."

Some highlights from today's WW episode...
Freedom to CHOOSE how we respond to life is the most basic freedom
Freedom is not attained from how we structure out outside world (money, work, family, etc)
Health IS freedom - physical, mental, emotional health is our freedom to move, think, and BE
Knowing the truth of who we are and where health and freedom come from is powerfully important
Collective peace and freedom can be achieved - it starts with how we individually relate to ourselves and the world
#271 | MM - Mind Body Freedom from the Symptom Imperative
17 Jan 2022
00:25:37
Symptom Imperative? It's the symptom that occurs when pain changes location or when it's replaced by another symptom or conditioin that may also become chronic.
We (mainly Dr. Susanna) have been diving into a deeper understanding of the mind-body phenomenon of tension myositis and the work of Dr. John Sarno. You can go back to Episode 267 for more of an overview.
In this episode we continue the conversation delving into topics near and dear to our hearts.
Physical health and healing is so complex and it is so very empowering to approach our healing process from a deep understanding of body, mind, and the multidimensional nature of our experience.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
The Symptom Imperative is the tendency for symptoms to recur or evolve (like whacking a mole!)
Why psychogenic symptoms are imperative in distracting the person from experiencing the fullness of "unacceptable emotions"
Symptoms may shift throughout the body in the process of “healing”, but will not fully resolve until an underlying issue is addressed
If you are struggling, chances are you are doing more thinking than you realize.
We heard a mentor share this wisdom that really resonated as Truth.
So often we may slide into struggle without even realizing it. Maybe there are thoughts that "this is difficult" so "I should feel ______."
But the truth is, the feeling of struggle or suffering that we bring to a situation is always 100% optional.
In this episode, we discuss our tendency to struggle and how we may, in a moment, be set free from that limiting state of mind. Join the conversations live on YouTube every Wednesday: https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
For more, deep conversations on the topics of Mind, Thought, and Consciousness come on into Peace on Earth: https://alter.health/peace-on-earth
Some highlights from today's WW episode...
Struggle is a state of mind, thoughts that we bring to a situation
Beneath our human perception is always the pure what-is-ness of reality
There is nothing wrong with struggling, but it sure helps to know where the struggle comes from
There is grace and ease available in even the most bleak and disastrous circumstances
The symptoms of struggle (tension, stress, upset, etc) are always great reminders to come back to the Truth
Neither of us has had hot flashes... but we have worked with many people who have, and some who never did.
The fact is that hot flashes are common and "normal," but not necessarily natural or healthy. In fact, most symptoms associated with menopause are a sign of liver stress. A stressed liver isn't able to regulate hormones as gracefully as a healthy liver. As a result, signs of hormonal dysregulation can occur.
In this episode, we cover the physiologic mechanisms of hot flashes and what we can do to naturally support the body in moving through hormonal fluctuations of menopause with grace.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
Menopause is a normal transition for all women, not a pathologic condition that needs to be treated
Hot flashes are known as "vasomotor symptoms" resulting from a changing set point in hypothalamic temperature receptors
Estrogen keeps the "thermoneutral zone" wide so there is more tolerance to greater fluctuations in temperature
A decrease in estradiol causes brain endorphins to decrease and norepinephrine to increase, leading to many symptoms (increased HR, palpitations, increased BP, sleep disturbances, hot flashes)
Thyroid, adrenals, and other endocrine glands are interconnected with reproductive hormones
Stress/cortisol management is key for hormone balance and decreasing hot flashes
Exercise (just walking 30 min daily!) is powerful in decreasing hot flashes
Liver support is super important (cleanse, WFPB eating, hydration, toxicity mitigation, etc)
Phytoestrogens in soy modulate estrogen receptors to support balance
Herbs: Maca, black cohosh, sage, vitex, pine bark extract (consult a naturopathic doctor)

07 Feb 2025
00:20:03
In this episode, we explore an often-overlooked yet powerful ingredient in daily nutrition—your mindset. We dive into the fascinating research of Dr. Ellen Langer on perception and healing, uncovering how your beliefs about food can shape your metabolic health, digestion, and overall well-being.
What You'll Learn in This Episode:
How your mindset impacts digestion, metabolism, and long-term health outcomes.
Insights from Dr. Ellen Langer's research on perception and its role in healing.
Why being too rigid with nutrition tracking can backfire—and how a relaxed approach can be more effective.
The connection between stress, food choices, and metabolic health.
Practical strategies to reframe your relationship with food for better results.
Real-world examples and observations from working with clients.
For a multitude of reasons, anger can e a difficult emotion for many.
Happiness, Joy, and Peace of course tend to be easier to feel and share.
Most even have an easier time with sadness, anxiety, grief, or loneliness, which are all more socially acceptable than anger.
In this episode, we explore the origins of anger and hope to normalize the human experience of anger and its expressions in the world.
There is a tendency in our culture for people to judge anger as an unacceptable emotion
Judging oneself for experiencing anger only leads to more tension and even repression.
Feeling anger is actually a healthy part of being human!
The true source of anger is not any external situation, and rather it is generated from angry thinking.
When we allow ourselves to feel angry, it moves through us more quickly and gives us feedback about our quality of thinking at that moment.
#267 | MM - Healing Back Pain & Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)
03 Jan 2022
00:29:28
Ugh... back pain. We've probably all had it, or at least 80% of us will, according to the NIH.
It can be a real pain in the butt! Or sometimes neck.... or hip... or.... you get the idea!
Sadly, over half of the population has back pain that persists for 5+ years with 200 BILLION dollars being spent treating the symptoms... yes, treating symptoms.
In this week's episode, we talk about the root cause of 99.9% of back pain which is almost NEVER addressed by any doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, or any other well-meaning physical medicine practitioner.
*This topic is very timely for us, Dr. Susanna in particular, as she is right in the midst of Healing Back Pain. She shares a bit of her story and journey today.
If you'd like to join these conversations live, be sure to Subscribe to the Alter Health YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
Some highlights from today's MM episode...
People are so often told their back pain is due to: Herniated discs, osteoarthritis / degenerated disc disease, “Pinched nerve”, “Sciatica”, osteophytes / bone spurs, spondylolisthesis
People are told and reaffirmed that their backs are fragile and vulnerable and they must be sure not to "injur" or "aggravate"
The underlying cause of back pain stress/tension (Tension Myositis Syndrome or TMS) according to the work of Dr. Sarno
Back pain is a physical symptom with psychological roots
Most feel it easier and more socially acceptable to deal with physical pain than emotional issues
The “Goodists” or “Perfectionists” tend to be most vulnerable
Conventional treatments fail to address the root of the issue: Anti-inflammatories, Physical therapy, Chiropractic, Massage, Spinal Traction, Yoga, Rest, Surgery, Etc, etc, etc.......
Tensionmyositis is also a probable root cause of many other chronic pain conditions
Overwhelm, busyness, to-do lists... there sometimes seems no end.
Amidst the craze of busy minded thought storm, there is always peace, clarity, inspiration, as well as opportunities to warp time in your favor to get what you need done exactly when it's needed.
Here we share some recent insights about our experiences of transcending the busyness of life. Join the conversation live on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/alterhealth
For more, deep conversations on the topics of Mind, Thought, and Consciousness come on into Peace on Earth: https://alter.health/peace-on-earth
Some highlights from today's WW episode...
Busyness is a state of mind, not a product of a long to-do list
We always will have thoughts of wanting to do more in less time - we can let those go!
It is possible to be free from reality-based "deadlines" and surrender to the spiritual "lifeline"
Dynamic "Boundaries" can be set that reflect our everchanging needs
An open mind without external pressure lends itself to creative inspiration and the warping of time to "get more done"
