Lú Festival of Light Drogheda will run over two long weekends, and will shine a light on the myths and legends from our shared mythological past.  

Drogheda, gateway to the Boyne Valley was one of the first settlements in Ireland’s Ancient East and is home to many of Ireland’s ancient tales.  The festival will focus on telling the stories of 5 of Ireland’s mythological heroes and heroines that have been passed down through the generations.

An amazing display of urban animation, Lú Festival of Light, Drogheda is free to attend and will run over two long weekends, 25th to 28th of October and 31st October to 3rd of November.

We've moved from our regular production of All Things TechIE to an episode we believe may become a small series on the topic of how some global AV professionals got involved in the world of Audio Visual. The idea of this topic originated during the summer when Simon and I were discussing the Leaving Certificate Irish state examinations and both of us came to a conclusion that neither of us dreamt that we were going to end up in the world of Audio Visual.

So is it easy to enter the world of Audio Visual? Do many AV Professionals plan that this is the career they wanted to take as a young 17 or 18 year old who has just finished their state examinations? Is there enough courses to assist with young people wanting to pursue audio visual as a career?

This programme has received a massive response which has resulted in a small series on "How I got involved in AV" which will be part of our monthly podcast.

Yesterday, as part of Episode 85 of All Things TechIE Podcast, I stepped into a world of magic and myth at the Lú Festival of Light in Drogheda. A meeting with Oisin O'Brien, the founder of Visual Spectrum and one of the masterminds behind this spectacle, was the cherry on top.

Oisin and his team have transformed Drogheda into a living storybook, illuminating the city's historical sites with tales of Boann, the Salmon of Knowledge, Amergin, the Gods of Newgrange and many more.

Every corner of the city, from the Old Abbey to St Laurence’s Gate, is drenched in light and legend. The intricate stonework of Drogheda has become the canvas for spectacular projections, bringing to life heroic warriors, mythical creatures, and ethereal landscapes.

But it's not just about the visuals.

The festival is a sensory feast, with audio narrations accompanying the stunning visuals, immersing you deeper into Drogheda's mythological past.

And the streets? They're alive!

Stilt walkers, face painters, fire breathers - they're all there, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Cafes, bars, and restaurants are buzzing, staying open late to cater to the festival crowd.

And for the little ones? A Viking Encampment at the Old Abbey carpark, promising a family fun area like no other.

The Lú Festival of Light is a free event, running over two long weekends, from 27th – 31st of October and 2nd – 4th of November.

 Jack designed and built the Oculus DK1 and DK2 virtual reality headsets, prior to the acquisition of the company in 2014 by Facebook for $2 billion. In Episode 75, we will be discussing a range of topics in the tech industry, from the latest news and updates to the standards that govern video displays and lighting with Greg Jeffries.

In higher education, there is a growing trend towards using technology in classroom spaces, with many universities and colleges investing in direct view LED displays. However, there are issues with energy use and eye strain, as many of these displays are too bright, causing discomfort to students and professors alike. Choosing the right screen size and type is also crucial, followed by selecting the appropriate ALR screen for the location, using DISCAS standards.

In the future, architects will need to learn how to deliver technology-enabled spaces, which require different-shaped and sized rooms, leading to changes in actual building structures. When working with existing spaces, it is essential to establish a hierarchy of needs and prioritise what is important, even if it means some metrics might be compromised.

Standards play a crucial role in the AV tech industry. Although they can be intimidating, using standards can help manage equipment, identify essential items to spend the budget on, and keep the campus functioning. In the pro AV market, standards apply mostly to applications like higher ed, corporate, and government. While the industry has content and best practices for live events and other applications, digital signage and trade associations have a separate universe and specific standards.

Screen capturing on Windows can be done using the built-in Snipping Tool or the Snip & Sketch app, or by using keyboard shortcuts. Here are the steps for each method:

Using Snipping Tool:

1. Open the Snipping Tool by typing "snipping tool" into the search bar or by finding it in the Windows Accessories folder in the Start menu.
2. Click "New" in the Snipping Tool window.
3. Click and drag your mouse over the area of the screen you want to capture.
4. Once you have selected the area, release the mouse button.
5. The captured image will appear in the Snipping Tool window.
6. Click "File" and then "Save As" to save the screenshot as an image file.

Using Snip & Sketch:

1. Open the Snip & Sketch app by typing "snip & sketch" into the search bar or by finding it in the Start menu.
2. Click "New" in the Snip & Sketch window.
3. Click and drag your mouse over the area of the screen you want to capture.
4. Once you have selected the area, release the mouse button.
5. The captured image will appear in the Snip & Sketch window.
6. Click "File" and then "Save As" to save the screenshot as an image file.

Using keyboard shortcuts:

1. To capture the entire screen, press the "Print Screen" key (sometimes abbreviated as "PrtScn" or "PrtSc") on your keyboard.
2. To capture the active window, press "Alt + Print Screen".
3. The captured image will be copied to the clipboard.
4. Open an image editing program, such as Paint or Photoshop.
5. Press "Ctrl + V" to paste the screenshot into the program.
6. Click "File" and then "Save As" to save the screenshot as an image file.

Screen capturing on a Mac can be done using the built-in Screenshot app or by using keyboard shortcuts. Here are the steps for each method:

Using Screenshot app:

1. Press Command + Shift + 5 on your keyboard to open the Screenshot app.
2. Choose the type of screenshot you want to take from the options provided, such as capturing the entire screen, a selected portion of the screen, or a specific window.
3. After selecting the type of screenshot, adjust any additional settings as desired, such as the save location, timer, or whether to show the mouse pointer in the screenshot.
4. Click the "Capture" button to take the screenshot.
5. The captured image will appear as a thumbnail in the lower-right corner of the screen.
6. Click the thumbnail to open the screenshot and make any necessary edits or annotations.
7. To save the screenshot, click "File" and then "Save" in the menu bar.

Using keyboard shortcuts:

1. To capture the entire screen, press Command + Shift + 3 on your keyboard.
2. To capture a selected portion of the screen, press Command + Shift + 4, and then drag your mouse over the area you want to capture.
3. To capture a specific window, press Command + Shift + 4, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will change to a camera icon, and you can click on the window you want to capture.
4. The captured image will appear as a thumbnail in the lower-right corner of the screen.
5. Click the thumbnail to open the screenshot and make any necessary edits or annotations.
6. To save the screenshot, click "File" and then "Save" in the menu bar.

Using third-party screen recording software:

1. Download and install a screen recording software, such as OBS Studio, Bandicam, or Camtasia.
2. Open the software and choose the screen recording option.
3. Configure the recording settings as desired, such as the video quality, recording format, and audio options.
4. Start the recording by clicking the "Record" button or pressing the assigned hotkey.
5. To stop the recording, click the "Stop" button in the software or press the assigned hotkey.
6. The video will be saved to the specified location in the chosen format.
