"SOLSTICE CELEBRATION" - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar22 Dec 202500:18:16
The message was delivered on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister Description: What happens when you've been walking through the valley of shadow for so long that you can only see far enough to place one foot in front of the other? On the darkest day of the year, discover why ancient peoples understood darkness not as emptiness, but as the fertile dark—a womb leading to new life, where all beginnings take root before emerging into light. When an 85-year-old widower faced an agonizing medical decision, something extraordinary happened in his living room that changed everything about how he understood his life's value. Can the natural cycles spinning around us—the earth, the atoms, even the very particles of existence—teach us that no descent is permanent, and that hope returns as surely as tomorrow's sunrise? 'BUILDERS OF THE DREAM' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar06 Oct 202500:21:38
The message was delivered on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION: What does it truly mean to build a dream? Not just to chase what we want, but to create something that lifts others as we rise? Discover why the pursuit of personal goals leaves us empty when we seek only for ourselves—and how everything changes when we shift from "getting" to "giving." Explore the profound difference between achieving success and creating meaning. Learn why generosity isn't just about money, but about using every gift you possess—humor, strength, connections, time—to open doors for others. What happens when individual ambition meets collective purpose? In an era of rising authoritarianism, banned books, and threatened freedoms, some spaces become sacred. Some voices become essential. What makes a platform truly free? And what responsibility comes with that freedom? When spirituality meets the street and faith speaks to struggle, transformation begins. This isn't about comfort—it's about courage. It's about building the world we want to live in, together. The question isn't just what you dream for yourself. It's what you're willing to build for everyone. Sermon delivered by Jeremy Elliott, Intern Minister, Feb. 24, 2008. The Rev. Dr. Rebecca Parker, President of Starr King School for the Ministry, teaches that the history of Unitarianism and Universalism in America has been a history of unleashed soul power. From our founding, we have endeavored to cultivate all of the faculties of the soul to liberate, nurture, and heal our world. The Rev. Dr. William Ellery Channing spoke of the importance of "unfolding? these powers to find our salvation. Henry David Thoreau challenged humanity to "live life deliberately? to be truly alive to the world. This Sunday, we will explore and celebrate the lineages of ordinary prophets of liberal religion who shaped the movement we have inherited. How might we offer the powers of our souls to change the world?
Why God is Not a Democrat17 Feb 200800:25:57
Sermon delivered by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, Feb. 17, 2008. Last week, during Super Tuesday, my son came home from first grade asking questions about the difference between Democrats and Republicans. At first I was pleased to see that my son was beginning to take an interest in American public life. I began by asking what he knew. He explained that he had learned from his friend that, "Democrats don't believe in the Bible.? Initially, I smiled and thought it was a cute story about some first graders and their interpretation of American politics and religion. Then, it came to me that this is what a lot of adults actually think too. When any religion becomes identified with a particular political party, that religion compromises its purpose, weakens its witness and becomes idolatrous. In this protracted primary season it can do us some good to think about the role of religion in American public life.

A Joyful Noise27 Jan 200800:19:50
Sermon delivered by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, Jan. 27, 2008. Duke Ellington is considered one of America's greatest composers. He won Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize and the highest medals of honor by two presidents of the United States and one from the country of France. He ventured into the realm of sacred music and even has a hymn in the Methodist Hymnal. The story of Ellington's rise and his passion is a heartfelt, spiritual biography that transcends boundaries of many kinds. The All Souls Adult Choir will uplift the service with a choral rendition of one of Ellington's most well known sacred songs. In the service you'll find out what Ellington considered a four-letter word for God.

Changing Our Minds13 Jan 200800:20:42
Sermon delivered by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Assistant Minister, Jan. 13, 2008.Tim O'Reilly writes that John Brockman's magazine The Edge (www.edge.org) is "A remarkable feast of the intellect... an amazing group of reflections on science, culture, and the evolution of ideas. Reading the Edge question is like being invited to dinner with some of the most interesting people on the planet.? This month The Edge put the question to over a hundred scientists and scholars "What have you changed your mind about? Why?? Articles were submitted by Steven Pinker, Alan Alda, Michael Sherman, Richard Dawkins and many other names that you would likely recognize. I scanned for theologians and UU ministers and found none. The question intrigues me. How much and what kind of evidence instigates a change of mind? A change of heart? Over your lifetime, what have you changed your mind about and why? And how is this relevant to our religious community today?

Thanksgiving Festival Sunday18 Nov 200700:10:43
Homily Delivered by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, Nov. 18, 2007. The Sunday before Thanksgiving is when we celebrate our Thanksgiving Festival. It has evolved over the past few years in the same direction that I believe our country's self-identity needs to evolve. In our service we still honor the history and traditions of the Pilgrims, with whom our church-tradition shares a familial relationship. However, we have also begun to honor and recognize how people of many countries, ethnicities and religions have come to America and become a part of this great nation. Thanksgiving is the most widely celebrated holiday in the United States because it is not just the holiday of one faith tradition. It is a national celebration. As we mature beyond the many myths that have traditionally defined our country's origins, we come to hold an even deeper respect for our union and the reasons for which it stands.

"Feeling Together" with Rev. Tamara Lebak20 Mar 202300:22:17
We cannot understand religious authority without understanding our relationship to consent. What is our relationship to our own consent? What does it feel like to be fully bought in? What do we do when we feel someone else is not fully bought in? How do we work with the parts of ourselves that are not bought in when someone imposes on us? Join me at the 10:00 am Worship service as we explore how we can be (as in 1 Corinthians 3:9) co-workers in G*d's service and at the same time be the field and the building. "Inner Voices of Authority" with Carlton D. Pearson12 Mar 202300:37:25
How do we manage all of the roles we play in our lives — and does playing a role make us inauthentic? This Sunday, Carlton Pearson explores the what it means for us to remain authentic as we inhabit all of the pressures that surround what we hold to be precious. There are so many versions of us that we present that sometimes it can be challenging to find our true inner voices. "What Is A Woman?" with Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar05 Mar 202300:27:24
Are you ever afraid you might say the wrong thing or ask the wrong question? Do you wonder what to think about current debates, such as the ones about Transgender issues? Are you unsure where and when you can raise your concerns and receive a respectful and well-considered answers? This is a message about courageous love and the problem of certainty. On both sides of the current debate about whether a person can "change their gender" there are people who are certain. One side says, "Absolutely not!" and the other says "Absolutely yes" and there is not much room to question. In between these polarities most people wrestle (silently) with real questions and concerns about what is right and age-appropriate regarding gender fluidity, hormone treatments and various laws that seek to regulate gender in school sports, education and society. Who has the authority to decide a person's gender? The person? Parents? Pastors? Politicians? Pediatricians? Coaches? This message is much more than a talk about gender and rights, it is a deeply personal exploration of what it means to be human and how we show up for one another. "Civil Rights vs. Civil War" with Carlton D. Pearson28 Feb 202300:27:57
How do we manage the contradictions inherent in our group identities? Can we authentically agree to disagree, or does going along to get along actually fracture our authenticity? The answers to these questions are never static, but it matters that we get ahead of the questions — it's better to address our civil rights and needs before a civil war becomes necessary! Come for the music and stay for the message! The soundtrack of our lives is infused with influences from African American musicians and creators. To distinguish between American music and Black Music would be impossible. In the same way, it is impossible to distinguish between American History and Black History. This Sunday with the help of our musicians and our special musical guest, Booker Gillespie, we will tap our toes, move our hearts and consider how the soul of Black music has helped shape our own soul. "Black Like Me" with Randy Lewis13 Feb 202300:31:50
This Sunday, Randy Lewis challenges our understanding of race through the lens of black and white by exploring the simple fact that none of us are actually black or white — we are all simply varying shades of very light to very dark brown. A black/white dichotomy sets up false archetypes that serve to separate us. "Fractured Stories" with Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar05 Feb 202300:24:24
Have you ever acted on an incomplete story and paid the price for it? Every story has multiple sides depending on where we sit. As we launch our theme of "Freedom" and celebrate Black History, this month, we will examine the power of the stories we tell and how they can bless or curse our life. Some stories involve the casting of a spell which creates a false reality. This message may come like a kiss to break the spell that keeps us fractured. "Let's Stay Together" with Randy Lewis29 Jan 202300:58:54
Perhaps nothing is more desirable for humans than healthy community to hold us, to make our lives more meaningful and bearable, so why is it so hard and rare to find this community? The scarcity of beloved community only highlights our profound need for it. So what does it take? At All Souls, we aren't bound by a creed or a cross, instead we are held together by our covenant - our commitment to each other to love beyond belief. It turns out that our differences aren't problems that keep us from community - they are the very opportunities to reach out and create bridges to one another. As Søren Kierkegaard said, "When one has fully entered the realm of love, the world — no matter how imperfect — becomes rich and beautiful, consisting solely of opportunities for love." "Co-Creation Is It" with Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar22 Jan 202300:58:54
What does it mean for a myth to be true? Does it have to be literal and factual in order for us to glean meaning from it? This Sunday, Rev. Marlin explores the value of myth in our lives and in our world. It might require us to expand our imagination and interpret - indeed, to co-create the universe through our understanding. "Inescapable Web" with Rev. Gerald Davis15 Jan 202300:35:26
"Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will." — Frederick Douglass As we celebrate and learn from the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. this MLK Sunday, Rev. Gerald Davis reflects on the "santa-clause-ification" of MLK, a process in which we remember him as a soft and simply well-meaning figure, when in reality he was a radical political and social advocate — to the point that powerful people wanted him killed. 'A TURNING POINT' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar21 Sep 202500:29:01
The message was delivered on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION: What if the true test of freedom is not how fiercely we defend our own views, but how deeply we honor the dignity of those we cannot accept? From Benjamin Franklin's urgent warning to "hang together" to George W. Bush's defense of pluralism after 9/11, history reminds us that unity has always been fragile—and essential. Could small acts of kindness, even toward those we call enemies, shift the course of our nation's divisions? And if so, what might it take for us to rise to a higher love? "Dear Universe" with Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar11 Jan 202300:31:06
Joni Mitchell famously sung "We are stardust... and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden." What does it mean for us to be made of stardust, floating around on a speck of a speck in the vastness of the cosmos? Does it provoke a sense of wonder that we are here at all? Or maybe a sense of profound uncertainty as to how we got here, or where we are going? These feelings have been provoking us for millennia to create religions about how the stardust turned into us, and also about how we might get back to the garden. Maybe instead of explaining it all, these feelings can remind us how rare it is that we get to consciously exist at all, and maybe this can create a new kind of religious impulse... one that expands our worlds rather than limits them. "The 'God' of Small Things" with Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar11 Dec 202200:15:48
In his book, The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics, Richard Rohr, wrote: The most amazing fact about Jesus, unlike almost any other religious founder, is that he found God in disorder and imperfection — and told us that we must do the same or we would never be content on this earth… The struggle to forgive reality for being exactly what it is right now often breaks us through to nondual consciousness." The mystics of every culture have a way of discovering the divine in all things. In our tradition, Ralph Waldo Emerson encouraged us to discover God, or the Oneness of life, in nature and relationships and inside ourselves. As we explore the multifaceted theme of "God" this month, let us look for the Ultimate in tiny, everyday things. "They Have Become Like Us" with Carlton D. Pearson04 Dec 202200:28:24
In the Bible, there is a moment when God says about humans, "they have become like us." Well, who exactly is "us" there, and what does it mean to become like gods? As humans, we have immense power to create and destroy, but perhaps the thing that makes us *most* like "the gods" is our ability to decide what we will believe about them. Even if we were to see God face to face, we would still be responsible to interpret what we saw! "Agreeing to Disagree" with Carlton D. Pearson27 Nov 202200:26:10
Do we have to agree in order to get along? Or maybe it's more accurate to say we agree *to* get along. The Greek word "symphoneo," from which we our English word "symphony" simply means "to sound together" — not necessarily to sound alike. It's likely impossible for us to ever find someone who agrees with us on everything, and instead of those differences threatening our belonging, perhaps they are precisely what makes connection real and meaningful! "'Til Death Do Us Part" with Randy Lewis13 Nov 202200:28:25
This Sunday after the United States midterm elections, Randy Lewis reflects on what it takes to stay in relationship with those we love, and those we might love, across all of our differences and as we change. We may disagree about so many things on the surface, but beyond that there might be a greater love that holds us together. "Our Promise to America" with Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar06 Nov 202200:24:28
Our country is built on a promise we make to each other as citizens. It is far from a perfect system, but at its best it is guided by core values articulated in the Declaration of Independence regarding liberty and justice for all. As we head into an extraordinary election week, in America, people on both sides of the aisle seem to fear a win by the other side could be the end of our country as we know it. What do you do with your feelings that democracy may be failing? It is a time when having a community that cares about these things really matters. "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly" with Randy Lewis02 Nov 202200:27:21
This Sunday, minister Randy Lewis explores the uniquely American problem with violence — particularly gun violence — and what it means to protect ourselves, not just from physical threats, but from corrosive positions in our own hearts. Is there a political stance that can elevate us out of our current struggles with violence, or is this something that must begin within and spread outward?
