Nikita Dhawan, Founder of Youth for Animals, interviews Courtney Scott, Elephant Consultant for In Defense of Animals (IDA), about their Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants campaign. Courtney Scott is the Elephant Consultant for In Defense of Animals (IDA). Located in Portland, Oregon, she has spent the last 15 years working to advance the cause of captive elephants. In 2008, after witnessing the Oregon Zoo's senior elephant Packy pacing in his pathetically small cage, she was motivated to launch the non profit Free the Oregon Zoo Elephants (FOZE). Seeing Packy's suffering also inspired her to produce a film exposing the plight of captive animals. IDA has been a staunch ally for FOZE, and collaborated on many protests and outreach events. IDA with FOZE successfully lobbied to get the zoo to stop its use of bull hooks and IDA's efforts led to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) ban on bull hooks for all its member zoos. As of 2021, Courtney has been busy working for IDA on the Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants campaign, and is also engaged in developing more ways for IDA to support the cause of captive and wild elephants in Asia and Africa.

| Peter Singer | 21 Sep 2023 | 00:45:01 | |
Nikita Dhawan hosts Effective Animal Advocacy with guest Professor Peter Singer, a renowned philosopher and author known for his work in animal ethics and animal rights. Peter discusses his initial involvement in the field of animal ethics, emphasising his ethical background and realisation of the ethical issues in animal treatment, particularly in factory farming. He highlights the importance of considering the well-being of all conscious beings, not just humans, in ethical decision-making. Peter explains the concept of animal liberation philosophy, which advocates giving equal consideration to the interests and suffering of animals, challenging the notion that intelligence should be the sole determinant of moral consideration. He draws parallels between speciesism and other forms of discrimination, such as racism and sexism, to highlight the moral inconsistency in favouring humans based solely on intelligence. The interview touches on the updated edition of Singer's book, "Animal Liberation," and its relevance to contemporary animal welfare issues. Singer discusses the progress made by the animal rights movement and the challenges it still faces, particularly concerning factory farming. He addresses counterarguments and the complexities of ethical positions, especially when it comes to rearing animals in humane conditions for food consumption. Peter provides insights into the harsh realities of modern-day factory farming, focusing on the overcrowded and inhumane conditions in which chickens are raised. He highlights the health and welfare problems caused by rapid growth due to selective breeding and the high mortality rates among young chickens. Singer underscores the need for reform in the treatment of animals in the agricultural industry.

| Death sentence handed to wild monkeys of Sint Maarten, can we still save them? | 04 Sep 2023 | 00:53:58 | |
Reality Checks with Staci-lee The Government of Sint Maarten has decided to kill ALL their wild monkeys as a form of population control. Horrified by this policy a letter was sent to the government in March 2023 from the world’s leading primate and animal welfare organizations. The letter had 75 signatories offering their support in an effort to halt the death sentence. Born Free USA is leading the effort to save the monkeys. The alternative proposed would be to sterilize the monkeys, at no cost to taxpayers and let the monkeys live out their lives while going extinction naturally as breeding would cease. As of today these groups are still awaiting a response and the fate of the monkeys hangs in the balance though the government seems to have started the killing already. Have a listen as Dr Missy Williams, who runs the Dania Beach Vervet Project in Florida, talks about the monkeys, false claims and how people can help. Please take a moment to contact the Nature Foundation on the island who has refused to give out information about the monkeys https://naturefoundationsxm.org/ Also contact the government and ask they stop the killing and choose the humane alternative Egbert J. | What is going on in Colorado with our wolves and wild horses? | 18 Jul 2023 | 00:55:11
Reality Checks with Staci-lee Whenever the public hears about a conservation program proposed by the government the details are usually vague or lacking all together. This is often done to hide the true agenda from prying eyes. This episode takes a sobering look at the real power players, true agenda and sad, tragically common, reality behind the headlines of conservation. Despite voters in Colorado voting to bring back our native wolves to their ancestral home the plan put forth is not designed to save them. Listen to how the Governor, state and federal agencies, sketchy non profits and private industry have come together to take from the public coffers while lying about their true intent. This information is rarely reported in the media because the truth is a very endangered thing these days but you can find it here. All About Elephants Show hosted by Nikita Dhawan Veronika, a lawyer and animal activist, initiated a campaign for the release of Mara and Baby, two elephants confined in a roadside zoo in Slovakia. These elephants were previously circus performers and have been subjected to cruel training and poor living conditions. Veronika aims to find a sanctuary for them and bring about legal changes to prevent similar animal abuse. The conditions in the zoo are inadequate, with limited space, poor flooring, and a lack of proper food and water. The elephants exhibit signs of stress and aggression. Veronika's campaign has gained international support, with over 65,000 signatures on the petition. 🐘 Mara and Baby are Asian female elephants owned by a circus and have been performing their entire lives. 🚚 The circus, now called a roadside zoo, still travels and exhibits the elephants after animal circus acts were banned in Slovakia in 2019. 🏞️ The elephants are kept in a small enclosure most of the time, locked in a truck during travel or exhibitions. 🍏 Visitors can interact with the elephants by feeding them fruits and vegetables, but the elephants' access to proper food and water is limited. 🧠 The elephants exhibit stereotypical behavior, aggression toward each other, and signs of mental distress resulting from the cruel training they underwent. 💪 Veronika's campaign aims to re-home Mara and Baby in a sanctuary, advocating for a change in current laws to prevent similar animal abuse. 🌍 Support for the campaign comes from both local and international organizations, with over 65,000 signatures collected on the petition.

| Co-existing with Coyotes | 15 Jun 2023 | 00:58:31 | |
For as long as humans have been around the Coyote has been one of those species vilified and killed for almost no reason. Yes once in a rare blue moon one may kill livestock but the overwhelming majority of livestock, and domestic pets, are not killed by coyotes. Despite the scientific facts that coyotes are a boon to a healthy ecosystem the hype and false narrative making them out to be monsters persists. Coyotes help keep down the rodent population naturally which would eliminate the use of deadly poisons. Learn about the benefits of co-existing with this amazing species and what effective sustainable alternatives can be used to protect livestock, domestic pets and property. We should be embracing this species not killing in blood sport contests. Project Coyote is a non profit helping to educate the public about the benefits of coyotes and why killing them does nothing to decrease the population when mother nature is capable of doing that. | Zoos Unveiled: Legalized Exploitation of Wildlife with Devan Schowe | 10 Jan 2024 | 00:48:31
In this episode of the Rising Lioness podcast, host Erica Salvemini and guest Devan Schowe discuss the truth behind the zoo industry. They shed light on the exploitation and mistreatment of wild animals in captivity, as well as the recent partnership between the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The podcast highlights the need for better regulations and resources to rehabilitate animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. The podcast starts by addressing the fact that 23% of species in zoos are threatened with extinction, indicating that the majority (77%) are not. Despite this, zoos continue to keep and breed animals. The partnership between the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums aims to provide homes for animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. However, critics argue that it prioritizes profits over animal welfare. Animals seized or abandoned during the illegal wildlife trade often suffer from poor conditions during transportation, including dehydration, stress, hunger, and sickness. Immediate expert care is crucial for their survival. The podcast argues that instead of funneling resources into zoos, efforts should be focused on rehabilitating and rewilding these animals. Zoos profit from the entertainment of animals, perpetuating the idea that exploiting them for profit is acceptable. The illegal wildlife trade is a multi-billion dollar industry, making it the fourth-largest global illegal trade. Social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook play a significant role in facilitating the trade. The podcast emphasizes the need for awareness and action to combat the exploitation of wildlife. It calls on individuals to educate themselves and others, especially children, about the issue. It also highlights the importance of supporting organizations that prioritize animal welfare and conservation.

| Alaska Wildlife Alliance with Nicole Schmitt | 29 May 2023 | 01:09:56 | |
In our latest Wild For Change podcast episode, Nicole chats with Nicole Schmitt, the Executive Director of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance (AWA). Established in 1978, the AWA emerged as a dedicated advocate for Alaska's diverse wildlife, including marine mammals and endangered species. Guided by a profound understanding of the intrinsic value wildlife holds within ecosystems, as well as its significance to the people of Alaska, the AWA's mission is to ensure the preservation of wildlife biodiversity. In recent times, the AWA has broadened its horizons by forging partnerships with other environmental organizations. Together, they engage in legal battles against the exploitation of public lands and waters in Alaska by extraction industries. Through litigation, they aim to safeguard the precious natural resources of the region. On a personal level, Nicole Schmitt shares a unique connection with wildlife, shaped by her upbringing. Having grown up hunting alongside her father, she realized the importance of fostering relationships with animals based on respect, reciprocity, and humility, rather than entitlement or dominance. These core values form the foundation of her commitment to protecting the remarkable wildlife of Alaska.
| Death Row Pardons with Sheryl Joyce | 23 May 2023 | 00:57:49 | |
Host Billie Groom talks with Sheryl Joyce, the Founder and CEO of Pet Pardon. Sheryl's journey began when she stumbled upon a network of animal advocates on Instagram who were sharing posts of shelter animals facing imminent euthanasia. After actively participating in this community for several months, Sheryl recognized a significant gap in the animal care landscape—a lack of a platform that could facilitate real-time conversations and connections surrounding specific animals. In response to this realization, she took the initiative to develop the Pet Pardon app, which stands as the pioneering solution of its kind. This groundbreaking platform eases the burden on shelters and rescues by establishing a simpler channel for animal advocates to contribute donations and support animals listed for euthanasia. Sheryl's passion for animals has been a lifelong devotion, evident through her history of providing a home for numerous stray animals and contributing to various animal organizations worldwide. In 2018, she made the pivotal decision to leave her corporate role as a Marketing & Communications Director and wholeheartedly dedicate herself to the cause of Pet Pardon. Since then, she has never glanced back, fully committed to making a positive impact in the lives of vulnerable animals.
