COVID19 LUVALE (PSA)13 May 202000:01:22

The hands of health care workers (HCWs) play a critical role in keeping patients safe. If HCWs do not clean their hands at the right moments, using the proper methods, they can transmit infection-causing microorganisms through their hands from one patient to another. Performing hand hygiene at key moments is an important health care intervention. Hand hygiene reduces the transmission of microorganisms (including those that are antibiotic-resistant), increases patient safety, and decreases health care-associated infection (HAI). Effective, timely hand hygiene is a cornerstone of infection prevention and control.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), masks should not be placed on children under the age of two. For those age two and older, as well as adults, wearing a mask while out in public is optional.

While it doesn’t hurt to try to get your younger child to wear a mask, Banerji says she doesn’t think many parents will be successful in getting their child to keep it on. But this, she says, is no reason for parents to be concerned.

On his episode we talk to Dr Natasha Kaoma a Health practitioner who highlights the importance of masks wearing

COVID 19 MYTH MISCONCEPTION AND HOW ITS SPREAD12 Apr 202000:16:44

Most of the people who catch COVID-19 can recover and eliminate the virus from their bodies. If you catch the disease, make sure you treat your symptoms. If you have cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early – but call your health facility by telephone first. Most patients recover thanks to supportive care.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are dry cough, tiredness and fever. Some people may develop more severe forms of the disease, such as pneumonia. The best way to confirm if you have  the virus producing COVID-19 disease is with a laboratory test.  You cannot confirm it with this breathing exercise, which can even be dangerous.

U-REPORT ZAMBIA A PLATFORM FOR ALL ANSWERS YOUNG PEOPLE NEED18 Dec 201900:16:38

Every hour, about three Zambian youth aged 15-24 years old get infected with HIV. Young people are more vulnerable when they have limited comprehensive HIV prevention information, are not equipped with life skills and do not utilize HIV high impact prevention services such as condoms, male circumcision, HIV testing and treatment

In Zambia, U-Report provides confidential, free of charge, individualized and interactive 24/7 counseling services on HIV and STIs to around 193,000 users, mainly adolescents and youth. This open source SMS-based system is a vital doorway to information for young people who might not have access to an internet café or mobile data.

In addition to the SMS counseling, polls are conducted periodically to get the opinions of young people. In order to ensure a high response rate, all polls sent to U-Reporters are first vetted by a closed group comprising only young people below the age of 24. This ensures that the messages endorsed by the National AIDS Council are re-phrased into a language that the youth can relate to and respond to honestly.

FEMALE gender-based violence a silent crisis18 Dec 201900:50:17

Gender-based violence (GBV) or violence against women and girls (VAWG), is a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime.

The numbers are staggering:

  • 35% of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence.
  • Globally, 7% of women have been sexually assaulted by someone other than a partner.
  • Globally, as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner.
  • 200 million women have experienced female genital mutilation/cutting.

This issue is not only devastating for survivors of violence and their families, but also entails significant social and economic costs. In some countries, violence against women is estimated to cost countries up to 3.7% of their GDP – more than double what most governments spend on education.

Failure to address this issue also entails a significant cost for the future.  Numerous studies have shown that children growing up with violence are more likely to become survivors themselves or perpetrators of violence in the future.

One characteristic of gender-based violence is that it knows no social or economic boundaries and affects women and girls of all socio-economic backgrounds: this issue needs to be addressed in both developing and developed countries.
