Runner with difficulty walking after diagnosis of bone on bone knee OA to 15,000 steps in Scotland- Laura's story 30 Oct 202300:16:54

Laura is a member of the signature membership, Adventurers for Life. She was a runner who started to develop knee pain which turned out to be severe osteoarthritis. She took up walking but then started to notice pain in the other knee, which was later diagnosed as bone on bone.

Fast forward to today where she returned from a trip to Scotland a few months ago with this win:

"My win is when I traveled to Scotland in July, I was able to walk at least 15,000 steps a day. I was walking on cobblestone and up and downstairs. I even attempted Arthur’s Seat. I only made it halfway, but I was so excited. 6 months ago, I won’t have been able to make it that far."

Now she has a trip to Thailand planned and is feeling strong. She is no longer limping and feels more confident with stairs.

Hear her story.

Recently took a long break from exercise? 3 considerations when getting back into it21 Feb 202300:09:54

Have you recently taken a break from exercise because life happened and you got busy?

Breaks happen but the most important thing is getting back into the swing of consistent movement and making it a priority again.

There are 3 considerations when getting back into a routine to help avoid setting off a flare, injuring yourself, or increasing your pain levels. These three things are:

  1. Increase frequency of rest
  2. Shorten workouts
  3. Consider full body moves

How much movement do you really need with osteoarthritis to find relief?14 Feb 202300:15:31

Have you ever wondered how much movement you really need when it comes to finding arthritis pain relief and feeling stronger?

There are different goals based upon two things:

  1. Your pain levels
  2. Your current level of activity

When just starting out and/or with higher levels of pain, including 5-10 minutes of purposeful movement into your day can be incredibly helpful.

If you have a higher fitness level and/or your pain levels are lower, aiming for 3 workouts per week is a good goal to start with depending on the intensity of the workouts and how hard they feel for you.

In this episode, Rebakah Rotstein of Buff Bones and I discuss:

  1. What osteoporosis/osteopenia is
  2. Rebekah’s own story with osteoporosis
  3. Are medications needed?
  4. What you need to be asking your doctor about
  5. How significant exercise needs to be in your life

Osteoporosis can exist with osteoarthritis, the problem is- osteoporosis can go undetected for a long time. Unless you have a fracture, it may be difficult to know if you have the condition. With osteoarthritis, many people reduce their physical activity significantly due to pain which can open you up to developing osteopenia/osteoporosis.

I did an earlier episode (episode #5) on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis which you can listen to here: https://osteoarthritis.buzzsprout.com/1886674/9652236-you-are-more-at-risk-for-osteoporosis-exactly-what-you-need-to-know-to-prevent-and-manage-it-with-osteoarthritis

“You have the knees of an 80 year old”- how to react to what you’re told about your x-rays and exactly what you need to know about your options with Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, PT03 Jan 202300:27:45

Please listen to episode 54 FIRST: X-rays and MRIs do not decide surgery, what you need to know before you make a decision https://www.buzzsprout.com/1886674/episodes/11934530

In this episode Dr. Alyssa, PT discusses 4 patient stories of what they were told about their x-rays and how they moved forward to success. Without the right direction, looking at an MRI or x-ray can be scary- especially if you’re told you are bone on bone or “have the knees of an 80 year old”. You’ll hear each short story as well as her commentary on how to open the discussion up with your doctor/surgeon, who else to get an opinion from, and how to advocate for yourself.

Here are the 4 scenarios discussed:

  1. Being told you are bone on bone
  2. Advocating for PT first to avoid surgery
  3. The “pain is in your head” conversation
  4. “You have the knees of an 80 year old”

Learn how to respond and what questions to ask in each scenario.

X-rays and MRIs do not decide surgery, what you need to know before you make a decision27 Dec 202200:17:36

Blog post on how to decide on a joint replacement surgery: https://keeptheadventurealive.com/how-do-you-know-if-you-need-a-joint-replacement/

One of the biggest misconceptions about osteoarthritis is that the x-ray or MRI of your joint tells the whole story about the pain you’re experiencing. Upwards of 75-80% of people have arthritic changes on an x-ray but do not experience frequent joint pain…

The image of your joint does not correlate with the intensity of pain you may be experiencing. There are other pieces to the puzzle that must be addressed and examined before deciding on a joint replacement.

STOP stretching & try these 4 exercises for tight hamstrings03 Sep 202400:13:09

Stretching isn't the best for tight hamstrings...❌

Instead, strengthening the hamstrings can be effective in reducing both pain and tightness!

Stretching may actually increase irritation to the muscle. Specific strengthening exercises can make your hamstrings feel flexible and mobile again.

One of the main reasons muscles become tight is due to weakness. Your body then turns to tightening the muscle to achieve stability. This is why hamstring strengthening can be incredibly effective.

Join Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist as she takes you through 4 hamstring strengthening exercises to reduce tightness, pain and injury. Choose one of these or all of them to start focusing on. The key is making sure the exercises feel good.

Balance is incredibly important when it comes to not only feeling more confident on uneven surfaces but also when searching for osteoarthritis pain relief. Oftentimes I find balance is left out from exercise routines. Even if it is included, just simply being able to stand on one leg may not be enough to unlock confidence while adventuring or to allow for significant pain relief. In this episode you’ll hear some balance examples as well as why it’s important to include in your daily routine.

Where most people go wrong when searching for arthritis pain relief with Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, PT, DPT04 Oct 202200:16:16

As a physical therapist and arthritis specialist, I know that finding pain relief from osteoarthritis is not easy. If you are feeling stuck or spinning your wheels without success with pain relief- I’m glad you’re here.

One of the biggest challenges I see in osteoarthritis care is actually understanding what causes your pain because this is the gateway to finding solutions. Pain can be triggered by inflammation but there are many things that contribute to inflammation.

Instead of searching for the best supplements, trying every pain relief cream out there, and even trying every exercise program- it’s so important to understand what is contributing to YOUR pain. This specific plan is mapped out inside the Arthritis Adventure Blueprint.
