In the USA, national guidelines recommend that all patients with recurrent or metastatic breast cancer should be offered genetic testing for germline breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 or 2 (BRCA1 or 2) mutations to identify patients potentially suitable for treatment with a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor.
