Flashback to the late nineties...cartoons are on TV and every ad break is packed with high intensity rock music, overly excited narration, and bombastic scenes of exciting board gaming. Ep. 7 - Games With Random15 Jul 202400:49:29

This week, our topic is "Games With Random". Some games have you rolling dice, drawing cards, or picking chits out of a bag. In any case, the of unpredictability a draw or roll takes a bit of the control away from the player. Games like Chess eliminate random completely but other games use it to great effect. In this episode, we'll share a list of games that do this.

Rules for teaching rules!

  1. Do Your Homework! - Learn the game before introducing it to a group
  2. Big to Little - Start with the objective, even if it's just “get the most points” and work your way down (objective -> round structure -> turn structure -> actions -> exceptions)
  3. Use the Game Structure - Use a player aid to structure explanation if one exists and keep the focus on the current step
  4. Allow Questions - Pause and check for understanding/answer questions
  5. Reiterate and Highlight - Reiterate the end game scoring/conditions once players understand the mechanics
  6. Mid-Game Check-In - “Pause” the game to highlight corner case rules after players begin
