"What punk rock taught me about mental health" with Jason Schreurs26 Jan 202501:00:57

Jason Schreurs is a music and mental health writer, host of the Scream Therapy podcast and self-proclaimed punk weirdo living in British Columbia. His book, Scream Therapy: A Punk Journey through Mental Health, follows the transformational journeys of himself and fellow musicians revealing the healing power of punk rock. Jason is happiest when screaming into dented microphones and playing guitar like it’s a percussion instrument.

Although less of a screaming match, and more of a thoughtful discussion, we are excited to share a glimpse of Jason’s story with you.

"What would I do if I wasn't afraid?" with Jay Fillion11 Oct 202000:45:46

"If you're already a music therapist you do have the skills to get the best out of the client and make the project happen"

In this week’s episode of Able Voice Podcast we are joined by Jay Fillion to talk a little bit about the world of music technology. Jay shared a bit of his musical journey from how he has always engaged with music and songwriting, to his work within corrections, to how he is connecting with music tech and recording since retiring.

Jay Fillion has recently retired after a varied 28+ year career in the criminal justice field, primarily as a counsellor and program facilitator. During his career, a highlight was helping to start a music program with the incarcerated women at Grand Valley Institution for Women. Since then, Jay has been exploring the world of recording, producing, and living life with the saying, “what would I do if I wasn’t afraid?”

We hope this episode provides you with some tools and insights to support your own journeys, and helps encourage you to set aside some of your hesitations and jump right in!

What would you do if you weren't afraid? We want to hear from you so join the conversation and let us know!

Please consider leaving us a review and rating us on Apple Podcast and don’t forget to subscribe to your preferred podcast app to stay up to date on new releases!

Your voice is more than a melody. Join us in planting seeds in a growing field.

"How To Start A Private Practice" (Mini Panel) with Miya Adout, Mackenzie Costron, & Danielle Nicholls27 Sep 202000:36:09
Welcome back to another episode of Able Voice Podcast with Hayley and Kim. In this episode we are excited to introduce three guest panelists to share useful tips and insights about starting a private practice.

Miya Adout founded Miya Music Therapy in 2015 based on her vision to improve patient quality of life in healthcare settings throughout Ontario. Miya is a graduate of Concordia University where she received a Master of Arts in Creative Arts Therapies after having completed a BA in Cultural Studies. Miya works with individuals of all ages and abilities including with parents and infants, adolescents with autism, and seniors living with dementia. Miya is passionate about educating the public about the impact of music therapy through engaging presentations and workshops. Miya also sits on the board of the Music Therapy Association of Ontario, provides business coaching to healthcare entrepreneurs, and has created Connect 2 Music Therapy, an online global magazine for music therapists. When she's not providing music therapy or business coaching, Miya enjoys spending time with her toddler, spending time in nature, and practicing photography!

Mackenzie Costron’s journey is shaped through work as a Certified Music Therapist (MTA) and Registered Counselling Therapist (RCT) where she uses music and storytelling to bring hope, love and light into people’s lives. Mackenzie is also grateful to be the Owner and Founder of Find Your Voice Music Therapy with locations in Katarokwi/ Kingston, Ontario and K’jipuktuk/ Halifax, Nova Scotia. There she works with a team of heart-centered therapists where they strive to unite in love, hold safe space, and empower community. Mackenzie is beyond grateful to be in loving service as Co-Founder of Costron + Co alongside Jacquie Costron. Her training as a Licensed Heart Centered Facilitator and Fire Starter Sessions Facilitator, through Danielle Laporte, informs her work. She is passionate about supporting individuals through the development of their therapeutic, creative, health, wellness business. To shine their beautiful light and share their gifts with community.

Danielle Nicholls, BMT, MTA, is the owner and operator of Dolce Music Therapy, and is an accredited music therapist in good standing with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists. She completed her Bachelor of Music Therapy from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2016, where she studied voice. She graduated with Honours-with Distinction, and a minor in Psychology. After graduation, she completed her internship in the Hamilton/Burlington area, focusing on music therapy in palliative/hospice care, and long-term care settings. Since moving to Ottawa in 2017, she has been continuing to work with seniors and adults in mental health and dementia care. Using a client-centered and music-centered approach, Danielle incorporates her vocal training and guitar skills to focus on clients’ abilities and meeting them in the moment. She is passionate about using music to help people connect with each other and themselves.

We are excited for you to dive into this insightful discussion answering the following questions: What skills and tools are useful when transitioning from a creative mindset to a business/entrepreneur mindset? Can both mindsets still co-exist? Why is it important to understand your professional identity when deciding to start a private practice? What advice might you give people afraid of taking the step to start their own private practice? What have you learned during that experience?

"Bloopers"02 Aug 202000:11:39
Welcome back to Able Voice Podcast with certified music therapists Hayley Francis Cann and Kimberly Dolan. In honor of this, our 10th episode, we wanted to celebrate with something special! A bloopers episode! You read that right... a bloopers episode. Hopefully this makes you laugh just as much as it did us.

Why would we decide to do this to ourselves? As music therapists, we learn to embrace the unconventional moments, the silly moments, the unexpected moments AND view them not as failures or distractions but as opportunities to tap into our humanity. So, we invite you to let loose with us during this episode because we are all in need of a good laugh.

"Identity"05 Jul 202000:26:28
Welcome back to Able Voice Podcast with certified music therapists Hayley Francis Cann and Kimberly Dolan. In this episode we talk about identity. This is a big topic that has many layers. We have both discovered, along our journeys, pieces of our identities as human beings that correlate with our professional identities and pieces that do not.

This episode of AVP was recorded before the escalation of recent world events surrounding the targeted police brutality and oppression of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC). However, we challenge you to further consider how the factors of your intersectionality - including race, sexuality, age, level of education, ability, religion, gender identity, nationality, etc. - relate to your identity as a music therapist. We challenge you to think about the parts of your whole self that tangibly transfer into your identity as a music therapist. We would love to hear from you!

"Creating Safe Space"07 Jun 202000:19:29
Welcome back to Able Voice Podcast with certified music therapists Hayley Francis Cann and Kimberly Dolan. In this episode we talk about creating safe space and the importance that holds within the therapeutic relationship.

This episode of AVP was recorded before the escalation of recent world events surrounding the targeted police brutality and oppression of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC). However, we still think this is an important topic to present this week. It might be more important to hear now than ever before.

We challenge you to think about how you create safe and diverse spaces within your workplace, within your homes, and within your practice. Be sure to let us know your thoughts after listening. We would love to hear from you.

"Closure"24 May 202000:25:41
Welcome back to Able Voice Podcast with certified music therapists Hayley Francis Cann and Kimberly Dolan. In this episode we talk about closure - a topic that music therapists have plenty of theory about during the course of study. However, sometimes closure isn't always as neat and tidy as we might hope it to be. In this episode we explore how we navigate closure or, in some cases, lack of, both for our clients and for ourselves. We talk about the unique situation COVID-19 has placed us in and the state of pause it has placed on some of our relationships with facilities and clients. This is a topic that has the capacity to go much deeper and we want to hear from you! Take a listen, let us know your thoughts, and maybe even share some tips!

Show Notes:

"Patricia Allen (1992) introduced the term clinification in the art therapy literature to describe the transition that happens when we focus more on our clinical creative arts skills and neglect our own relationship with those creative arts. Iliya (2014) and Kunimura (2016) beautifully describe this as the “shift from being a creative arts therapist to a therapist who uses creative arts with clients.” This can happen when we only make or listen to music at or for work. And, this can lead to burnout. It can not only negatively impact our own relationship with music but can also negatively impact the ways that we are able to engage and communicate with the clients in the music (Iliya, 2014)."
