#251 - The depths of depression nearly cost Ash Wicks his life.04 Nov 202401:16:07

Ash Wicks is quickly becoming one of Australia's favourite creators.

With his witty humour & relatable take on marriage & parenthood, Ash has amassed a following of over 400k on Instagram & a loyal audience on his podcast 'Two Doting Dads', alongside cohost & great mate Matty J.

Though behind the humour, there is a story bigger than what some may expect from the funny man. A hard fought battle with depression & anxiety that Ash admits nearly got the better of him in his first few months of fatherhood. A story he has found purpose in sharing to help other early stage parents & men who struggle with their mental health.

This incredibly vulnerable conversation crushes stigmas for Aussie men & leans into a side of Ash Wicks that some of you may be seeing or hearing for the first time.

Josh Szeps is an Australian journalist & the host of popular podcast 'Uncomfortable Conversations' where he hosts some of the biggest political & social commentators/journalists from across the globe.

- How identity labels & tribalism garner division & create global conflict.

- Whether the use of pronouns & trans education in schools is right or wrong.

- The upcoming US election & Josh's honest thoughts on President Trump.

- How to see through virtue signalling & recognise real support.

#241 - The perks of selling your business for $180 million ft. Frank Greeff.12 Aug 202401:07:58

Frank Greeff is the co-founder of Realbase, a market place for real estate agents to purchase products to power their marketing & sales campaigns. Acquired by Domain in 2022, Frank & his fellow founding brothers cashed in on 10 years of blood, sweat & tears for a sweet return to the tune of $180 million. Frank continued on as CEO of Realbase for 2 years at Domain but in the last month has stepped away from his role, to turn his attention & focus toward passion & purpose.

Frank's new podcast 'Chew the Fat' is centred around interviewing men & women in the business space to share knowledge but not before he cooks them a meal in the kitchen. He hopes that the value shared in the podcast will build an audience to market his newest charity project to the masses. This project is in form of a cook book he is titling 'Eat with Purpose', of which all proceeds will go towards supporting children's cancer charities. It's an opportunity to do some good in the world & it is the perfect fusion between his love for business & cooking.

In this incredibly candid conversation I asked Frank:

  • Whether he anticipated the success he experienced in business or if he is surprised by it?
  • How he navigated the contrast between earning a modest living & selling for 9 figures?
  • What are the perks of financial freedom & what challenges still exist regardless of your bank balance?
  • What he is learning from his experience as a podcast host?
  • Amongst a host of insights he has to share from his incredible life experience.

Blake Lawrie & Zac Lomax: 5 Questions, 5 Answers.20 Dec 202200:43:05

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Blake Lawrie is one of the NRL’s best up & coming hard men. The St George Illawarra dragons front rower come from humble beginnings in the Illawarra region. His rise to the top division isn’t a story of luck & good fortune, it’s a product of hard work & adversity overcome on numerous occasions.

Like many successful human beings, there’s a story below the surface that makes the man affectionately known as ‘Blocka’ the man he is on & off the field.

At the age of 11 Blake lost his mum to breast cancer before he & his younger siblings moved their lives into their grandparents home. It’s undoubtedly what makes Lawrie the devoted family man he is & the footballer that his team mates have so passionately spoken about ‘wanting to be beside in the trenches’.

It was an honour to hear Blake’s story, his ambitions for the years to come & share banter with my co-host & our great mate Zac Lomax.

Ricky Garard: 5 Questions, 5 Answers.13 Dec 202200:10:51

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Ricky Garard was an underdog & name unknown heading into the 2017 Crossfit games, but by the weeks end, he was on the podium.

The Aussies fast rise from a narrow miss to qualify in 2016 to the title of 3rd fittest man on earth in 2017 broke the sport open & had his competitors scratching their heads. Though it was no surprise to Ricky, having walked away from a potential career in the NRL (rugby leagues top grade) to pursue his dream of being crowned as Crossfit's top dog.

Basking in the fruits of his labor, Ricky was away on a work trip when he received a message he never seen coming & with that message his world was turned upside down. Rick returned a positive drug test in the week following competition & was slapped with a 4 year ban, his dream was not only crushed, it seemed over.  He tested positive for SARMS. A supplement purchased over the counter at a regular supplement store & readily available to the general public who walk in to store looking to enhance their recovery. Ultimately a lack of education on banned substances is what landed Ricky in the hot seat & he was forced to pay the ultimate price.

Cast forward to the present day, a long 5 years later & the redemption story of Ricky Garard has gained incredible momentum. It's a story of great sacrifice, owning your wrongs & working for what he only knows is right... the title of fittest man on earth in 2023.

Ricky Garard's story is unique yet very relatable. We all know the pain of losing something you love or having a dream taken away from you. Though only a few know what it feels like to sacrifice everything else to actualise that dream all over again. It's nothing short of inspirational.

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Christopher 'Douggs' Mcdougall is a professional base jumper & wing suit pilot.

Tumbling from earths scariest peaks has afforded Douggs some of the highest highs, however they have been closely accompanied by the lowest of lows. Losing his partner in what he describes as an 'avoidable' jumping accident at over 200km/h as well as over 100 friends in his time. The lows sent him into a spiralling depression fuelled by alcohol abuse & illicit substances before he found hope & turned his life around.

Douggs describes his new path as a life 're-purposed' to serve others & promote the art of living.

This ep covered his personal experience with FEAR, LOSS & PURPOSE in an incredibly profound & inspiring way. It was beautiful to see the turning of the tide in Chris' story & I know his new found path is one of true impact.

Martin 'Rac' Heppell: 5 Questions, 5 Answers.30 Nov 202200:11:16

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Martin 'Rac' Heppell is a man of many talents & one of the greatest storytellers to ever grace the poddy.  Martin spent a large portion of his life living amongst a headhunting tribe in Borneo where he learnt to embrace the art of authenticity & felt the power of belonging. This out of the box experience was the foundation of a fun fuelled childhood where his parents embraced failure & openly spoke about their own. Martin is certain that the foundation & self esteem his parents built within him as a young man, saved his mental health when he was sexually abused by a stranger at the tender age of 7.

Rac went on to play in the AFL after school but claims he was never any good & as his short career ended, he felt like he had been left behind in life as he compared his current chapter to those who looked to be having great success around him. We discussed how important it is to live life on your own timeline & understand that its not about when you find your flow as long as you eventually do!  After 8 years as an educator & assistant principal, Martin found his way into the keynote speaker world, working alongside Hugh Van Cylenburg at 'The Resilience Project', teaching the principles of gratitude, empathy & mindfulness to a host of corporates, school kids, athletes & anyone who is eager enough to listen.

This was truly one of my all time favourite poddy eps. Martin can tell story as good, if not better than the next bloke & whilst many of them will have you rolling around in laughter, they are packed with meaningful messages & lessons that we can all learn from his life experience. He embraces vulnerability in such a beautiful way & I know so many of you will resonate & relate to Rac as I did in this episode.

Daniel Patrick: 5 Questions, 5 Answers.21 Nov 202200:24:06

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Aussie designer Daniel Patrick landed in LA a little over 10 years ago with $1,000 & a vision. Now he's one of the biggest names in luxury sportswear, having collaborated with the likes of James Harden & Adidas.

Fashion wasn't always Daniel's game, in fact, his early character was developed playing the game of Rugby League in Australia. A promising prospect & NRL hopeful, he chose to walk away from the game to pursue what he describes as his childhood purpose & what a decision that move has proven to be.

Our conversation was centred around the power of passion & determination. We discussed why you are never truly 'ready' to pursue a dream & why that makes self belief & work ethic even more crucial in actualising your vision.

Daniel's story is inspiring & he was so generous to share much of what has made him the success he is today.

#240 - Proposals, bar fights & saviour complex: 3 mates question everything.05 Aug 202402:02:24

Brad, Joey & Tye (Phoons) discuss the former limiting beliefs they once held that they no longer believe to be true.

Isn't it odd that society tends to criticise people in power or influence for changing their beliefs/stance even when it seems to be for the better?

A healthy element of growing as a human is to use or experience & learnings to understand ourselves & the world a little better than we did yesterday. Therefore, it only makes sense that with growth some of our beliefs are questioned, challenged & changed.

We shared a few examples of how this has been true in our own lives & it made for an interesting & as always, enjoyable conversation amongst 3 mates all navigating life in their late 20's & early 30's.

Connor Sahely: 5 Questions, 5 Answers. (Trigger Warning: This poddy contains conversation around suicide.)14 Nov 202200:13:17

TRIGGER WARNING: This poddy contains conversation of suicide & extreme mental health challenges. If you are experiencing challenges with your mental health, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 & remember It's okay, not to be okay <3

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Connor Sahely is a 23 year old man from Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula.

For most of his life, Connor ran from his challenges & hardship. Avoiding pain & suffering at all cost, until it found him & put him in a dark place. Reaching what he only describes as his "lowest of lows" Connor had contemplated & planned to commit suicide but wanted to leave the world with a final message. He planned to walk for 24 hours straight to raise fund & awareness for 'It's Okay, Not To Be Okay'. Completing the 111km walk gave him hope in himself again & it was the beginning of a quest to suffer in service of others & build the resilience or as he calls it 'body armour' required to deal with depression & life adversity he would continue to battle.

Just 25 days out from his 3rd & potentially final charity challenge, Connor is attempting to do 3139 chin-ups in 24 hours to represent the number of lives lost in 2020 to suicide. Aiming to raise $20,000 for It's Okay, Not To Be Okay & remind those watching on that they are capable of amazing things when they sometimes can't see that in themselves.

This conversation was powerful & it was an absolute honour to share Connor's story on the poddy.

Missy Lancaster: 5 Questions, 5 Answers.29 Sep 202200:20:26

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Missy Lancaster is one of Australia's biggest country music artists having amassed over 20 million streams as an artist & songwriter alongside 3 Golden Guitar & 2 CMC Country Music Awards nominations.

Missy's career began on stage as a 15 year old in country town pubs before she was signed by an agent & flown over to Nashville, Tennessee.

The now 28 year old has developed most of her career at home in Australia. Writing, recording & performing on a relentless schedule that came to a screaming halt when covid shutdown the industry that had occupied her time & energy for a decade. As silence & solitude dawned on her, Missy had an eating disorder relapse & was forced to relive the battle & consequential pain of her earlier anorexia diagnosis.

Missy's willingness to be vulnerable & share the truth of her journey allowed us to create a beautiful conversation around:

- The power of harnessing your pain artistically & using it to serve others.

- The importance of finding balance in the wake of your suffering & looking after your mental health as a musician.

- Her eye opening trip to Uganda with International Needs Australia & the trauma of witnessing the brutal human sacrifice that takes place in some of these communities.

- & much more.  Be sure to follow Missy & I on socials (insta & tiktok) @missylancastermusic @bradleyjdryburgh & head to https://www.ina.org.au/ to help fight against the injustice happening in Uganda & other third world regions.

Missy's willingness to be vulnerable & share the truth of her journey allowed us to create a beautiful conversation around:- The power of harnessing your pain artistically & using it to serve others. - The importance of finding balance in the wake of your suffering & looking after your mental health as a musician.- Her eye opening trip to Uganda with International Needs Australia & the trauma of witnessing the brutal human sacrifice that takes place in some of these communities.- & much more.Be sure to follow Missy & I on socials (insta & tiktok) @missylancastermusic @bradleyjdryburgh & head to https://www.ina.org.au/ to help fight against the injustice happening in Uganda & other third world regions.Follow/Subscribe to the show on your platform of choice, leave a 5 star rating & kind review to help us reach new listeners & uplift others like yourself around the world.Big love,Brad.

G'day g'day,

As I look forward to standing on stages across the country & one day, the world, I wanted to share some of the key elements I will touch on in my keynote sessions. These thoughts & theories are derived from the lessons I've been blessed to learn along the quest of my life thus far. Mark Hughes: 5 Questions, 5 Answers.14 Sep 202200:07:44

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

At the end of a decade long career at the Newcastle knights, Mark Hughes was not only praised for his ability as a rugby league player but he was commonly known as one of the nicest blokes to ever play the game. Marks retirement plans were to enjoy the life he & his wife Kirralee were building with their children before a shock diagnosis turned their worlds upside down.

Scans revealed an avocado sized tumour on Mark's brain & it was soon confirmed to be cancerous. After riding the rollercoaster of emotions that come with a life threatening diagnosis, Mark decided that he would not be defined by his circumstances but rather how he responded to them.

The Mark Hughes Foundation was born from the hope to help others fighting a battle alike his own & to find a cure to stop brain cancer for good. Having raised close to $30,000,000, Mark is well & truly leading from the front. Mark is the brain behind the famous 'Beanies For Brain Cancer' appeal & has had incredible support with a full round of the NRL calendar dedicated to their fundraising & awareness efforts. He is also incredibly proud of the foundation's very own research centre at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

This is an incredible story of triumph in the face of tragedy & a never give up attitude that fuels Mark's fire to keep living a purpose driven life. it was my honour to share Mark's story on 'A Lot To Talk About'.

#239 - Start building wealth in your 20's & 30's ft. Equity Mates.22 Jul 202400:42:09

Bryce & Alec (Ren) are the two Aussie lads behind the popular finance & investing podcast Equity Mates.

I invited the fellas on the poddy to discuss Australia's housing & affordability crisis, how to start your investing journey & the keys to building wealth & planning your future while enjoying your avo toast & oat latte's too.

As a 23 year old I fought my way into the property market at the end of 2019, sold high in the covid housing boom in 2021 & burnt through my piggy bank pursing my dreams & living my life. I don't regret it, in fact it taught me a lot about myself & afforded me an opportunity to invest time in creating the kind of life & opportunities I wanted for myself. Now as a 28 year old man who hopes to provide for my partner & future family, I am starting to think about our financial future but I don't want to stop enjoying life & having experiences, it is too precious & we only get 1 go at it.

So how does one achieve the best of both worlds? A balance of financial stability, wealth generation & a whole lot of livin in the process...

Tune in to this incredibly fun & informative conversation with Equity Mates, learn along with me & be sure to subscribe to the poddy, share the episode with your mates & connect with us on socials @bradleyjdryburgh @equitymates

Big love,

Brad xoxo

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Kyle Collis is an incredible human being. Diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth, the odds were against him from the jump. Throughout his childhood, he felt as though CF rendered him weaker & less able than his peers. It's the reason he never challenged himself physically, until he & his wife brought children into the world. Driven to be a great father & to watch his kids grow up, Kyle began to dabble in physical exercise & before long found himself tackling ultra marathons.

Ahead of his 100 mile race in April 2023, we caught up to share an inspirational message with CF patients across the globe & to inspire those who face adversity in any area of their life. We discussed the life changing benefits of the recently approved wonder drug 'Trikafta' & his plans to ensure all CF patients have a prosperous future.

'The Project Of Happiness' is an idea that I first heard about a little over 2 years ago. My best mate & founder of 'TPOH' Zachary Biddulph & I were on one of our regular morning walks when he expressed his desire to travel around the country in a van & make a difference. The concept of encouraging others to express gratitude to the people they love & in turn make the world a happier place. It was soon after that he met & introduced me to the love of his life & now fiancé Stellah Littlemore & from the get go she was on board with the mission.

Ahead of their departure, Zach & Stells sat down to share their plans & to talk about the principles they hope to share with the every day Aussies they meet along the way.

I have so much love for these beautiful humans. They are 2 of my nearest & dearest & I am beyond excited to watch their adventure unfold & I want to encourage you to do the same!

Josh Hammann is the chaplain at the Illawarra Hawks NBL team, the GM of Lighthouse & a pastor at Lighthouse church. I first knew Josh as 'Mr Hammann', my high school rep touch footy coach. In our first interactions I was encouraged by a coach who could see the best in each of his players & took pride in highlighting our strengths. After leaving high school, it was a few years before we reconnected & caught up on the development of our lives in the years past. It comes as no surprise that Josh is sought-after as a mentor & leader of many, including yours truly.

It was a pleasure to have Josh on the poddy. We spoke about the art of leadership, the role faith has played in his life & what to do when you feel stuck or lost in any area of your life.

Jeremy Latimore is a former NRL player having spent time at the Parramatta Eels, New Zealand Warriors, St. George-Illawarra Dragons, Penrith Panthers and the Cronulla Sharks. The man known as 'Latsy' & 'The GOAT' played 182 games after debuting later than most of his peers at 23 years of age. Often described as a 'journeyman' Latsy & I discussed the tag & how hindsight has allowed him to embrace his unique experience as an athlete of many clubs.

Jeremy spoke of his early life in Port Macquarie, the injuries that threatened a future in the professional sport & how welcoming his first born into the world changed the narrative of his NRL career for the better. We related with our challenges in forming a new identity after walking away from former careers & the quest of a life that is on purpose & fuelled by passion.

Latsy is a great man. Highly regarded by his peers as one of the games biggest characters but more impressively known for his qualities as a friend & top notch human being. It was an honour to sit & share story with Jeremy & i know this episode will be loved & enjoyed by all of you who choose to tune in.

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

David Knoff is an extraordinary man with an extraordinary story. A former infantry platoon commander in the Australian Army & member of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, David has served our country in volatile territory around the world. However, the most testing time of David's life begun in 2019 when he embarked on a research mission to Antarctica as a station leader of the Davis Research Station.

The global pandemic changed the course of the expedition, turning a one year commitment into 537 days of winter with no way home. David's leadership was tested, his 'why' was question & he was without any option but to knuckle down, exercise resilience & find a way to get his team through to end.

'537 Days of Winter' was not only his reality but it became the name of his now published book. A book containing the lessons learnt in the face of adversity, lessons that he hopes to share with the world through his work as a keynote speaker.

Stella Campbell: 5 Questions, 5 Answers.10 Jul 202200:08:28
5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey. Stella Campbell is a fast bowler from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Having found a love for cricket at a later age than most of her peers, she rocketed onto the scene earning her spot in the NSW Breakers, Sydney Sixers & Australian teams. The now 20 year old, had been enjoying the hard work & pursuit of excellence on the pitch before a back injury halted her progress & had her sent for surgery. It’s not uncommon to feel lost or threatened when something you love & feel accomplished in is taken away from you, even be it for a short period of time. Whilst recovering in bed, Stella was disconnected from her persona as a cricketer & had to go in search of who she is as a person & craft a purpose that gave her a ‘why’ outside of the game. This was a wonderfully honest & thoughtful conversation that feels relatable for the masses, not just athletes.Be sure to follow Stella & I on socials @stellaacampbell @bradleyjdryburghFollow/Subscribe to the show on your platform of choice, leave a 5 star rating & kind review to help us reach new listeners & uplift others like yourself around the world.Big love,Brad.

Jade Spooner: 5 Questions, 5 Answers.07 Jun 202200:10:42

5 questions & 5 answers forms the conclusion of each podcast I host. Right here, you are seeing it as a preview to the full episode featured on my channel. If you enjoy this, then you need to tune into the full version to hear the story of my guest's personal journey.

Michael Jordan & Kobe Bryant's performance specialist Tim Grover once said "interested people watch OBSESSED people change the world", & I love that quote. Simply put, Sydney based entrepreneur Jade Spooner is obsessed with building businesses from the ground up.

Reaching the prestigious acclaim of Forbes' 30 under 30 is something very few in business will ever achieve but many dream of. Jade alongside her 'Equalution' co-founder achieved the mighty feat through utter self belief & 8 years of hard work. Yet at the height of it all with her future mapped out in front of her very eyes, she felt uninspired & unfulfilled. She described the feeling of 'loneliness' as she realised she had been existing for business & ceasing to truly live.

Selling her 50% stake in Equalution & going on a quest of self discovery, Jade found new passion for business in the form of a new start up: 'Big Uppetite', alongside a new co-founder & a refreshed outlook on life.

Jade is on the pursuit of happiness. Understanding that true success for her is far greater than Forbes lists, it is shared moments with loved ones & life rich with experience. She really is a lovely human, with a kind heart, formidable work ethic that demands respect & love for serving others through the knowledge she has acquired.
