Today’s episode was ripped directly from one of our 10,000 NOs Insiders Acting Community weekly zooms where Matt addresses the challenges that face our members. Today, he questions whether his constant advice to members to “bet on themselves” is great or dangerous. We discuss the inherent risks in betting on yourself but also how perseverance and refusal to quit almost always pay off over the long haul. 10,000 NOs is here to inspire you and help you realize you are not alone if you’re battling to overcome rejection in your career or life. Today’s episode was ripped directly from one of our 10,000 NOs Insiders Acting Community weekly zooms where Matt addresses the challenges that face our members. Today, we discuss the importance of the people we include in our inner circle. Matt’s entire motivation for creating Insiders in the first place was to give others the benefits he had from his tightest friendships within the industry: how those friends pushed him, inspired him and pulled him up after he got knocked down repeatedly. 10,000 NOs is here to inspire you and help you realize you are not alone if you’re battling to overcome rejection in your career or life. | Michael Imperioli: Renaissance Man | 04 Mar 2024 | 00:59:49
While many people identify Award Winning Actor Michael Imperioli with his role of Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos, or more recently, as Dominic Di Grasso, on The White Lotus, his talent stretches far beyond his thespian roots. He has written screenplays, novels and episodes of television. He has developed Television shows, plays in a band, practices Buddhism and has run his own theater with his wife. He is an artist’s artist. Far from the hot-headed Moltisanti, Michael ponders, jokes and waxes philosophically with me. He also tells some pretty great stories of how his early career opportunities, like Goodfellas, changed the course of his career and introduced him to talents like Spike Lee. And how the super stardom of The Sopranos did not answer all of his prayers, paving his path to Buddhism. Like the rest of the actors I’ve sat down with on 10,000 NOs, he is not immune to rejection and travels the same winding trail as his less famous counterparts. 10,000 NOs podcast is now in it’s 2.0 phase: after a long pause from late 2021 to late 2023, it has returned in a more raw format: shorter episodes, like the Monday Morsels of yesteryear (they may be short, solo riffs by Matt on central themes of the pod, excerpts from Matt’s 10,000 NOs Insiders Community Zooms, or excerpts from Insiders VIP sessions with VIPs from the entertainment interview and beyond). Be on the look out as, every now and then, we will likely drop some old school, long-form, classic 10,000 NOs interviews as bonus episodes. Prefer to WATCH (versus listen)? | Gratitude Can Turn Obstacles Into Opportunities | 30 Nov 2020 | 00:30:45
While nothing is perfect (ie.the COVID Thanksgiving we just experienced with loved ones joining us remotely on a computer screen, IF we were fortunate enough to have that technology), but how you frame your obstacles determines whether they really are obstacles or just opportunities in disguise. With an updated intro for present day, this rerelease from August of 2019, about a mice problem Matt had in his garage and house, reminds us that even mice can teach us something about our life. As one of our most-listened-to episodes that almost never existed, it also teaches us that, usually, the things we fear sharing about ourselves are the very things people value the most if we have the courage to share them. Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 NOs... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week. It is not the critic who counts. If you’ve been knocked down... get up, dust yourself off, and get back in the arena. | Concert in Motion Founder, Jennifer Finn: Healing Through Music | 27 Nov 2020 | 00:52:35
Opera singer Jennifer Finn had an idea: how can musicians and singers get more live practice of their craft while simultaneously bringing joy to underserved New Yorkers? What followed is the creation of the not-for-profit organization Concerts in Motion, which had NY1 naming Finn their “New Yorker of the Week”. In classic “10,000 NOs Failure is Opportunity” fashion, Finn is executing where most others merely dream or talk about pie in the sky ideas. Serving isolated elderly folks, underserved minority musical hopefuls and professional musicians and singers, Jennifer’s voice is filling more than just the opera houses she had hoped to one day play. It is not the critic who counts. If you’ve been knocked down... get back up, dust yourself off, and get back in the game. If you want to give back, share this with someone who could use it. | You Never Know Who's Watching | 23 Nov 2020 | 00:18:14
Matt introduces this re-release of a solo episode from May of 2019, weighing in on why now was the time to bring you an episode where he riffs on the idea that what you do when no one is watching is what gets rewarded later in public. Revealing a guest request made by the staff of an Acting Coach to Oscar Winners and Nominees (now-past guest, Terry Knickerbocker) who turns out to be a passionate listener to 10,000 "No"s, Matt talks about the importance of maintaining standards and how you never know who's out there listening, watching you, or being impacted by you, both positively and negatively. Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 "No"s... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week. | Aldis Hodge: Race in America and the Entertainment Industry | 20 Nov 2020 | 01:00:12
If you missed Aldis Hodge's classic 10,000 NOs origin story episode from last week, you can listen to it here. Today’s episode was unplanned. When Matt and Aldis sat down, one of the first questions Matt asked was “what’s the biggest ‘no’, literal or proverbial, that you’ve had to overcome?” This led to what we deemed to be a stand-alone conversation about race in America and, particularly, in the film and television industry. Without holding back, Aldis brings truth, courage, humor, thoughtfulness and an articulate perspective on what he, and other minorities are forced to live through unbeknownst to others who do not share their ethnic background. Matt weighed in, from the perspective of his background, ethnicity and experiences as a white man in the world, and this industry. What followed is the conversation you are about to hear: two friends, colleagues, cast-mates trying to understand one another’s experience and find some answers amidst the large and difficult questions that arise around this hot-button topic. It is not the critic who counts. If you’ve been knocked down... get back up, dust yourself off, and get back in the game. If you want to give back, share this with someone who could use it. | The Pros and Cons of a Vulnerability Hangover | 16 Nov 2020 | 00:14:53
If you’ve seen Jerry Maguire, you know what a Vulnerability Hangover is even if you’ve never heard that term. This week, Matt admits to the self-lacerating period that followed his book release on October 27th, and then discusses how he got out of it and how you can too. Taking a leap is a beautiful thing. And when it goes well, the benefits are beyond your wildest dreams. But, beware your ego and the critic in your head, who may force you into a vulnerability hangover before you can celebrate your wins. Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 "No"s... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week. | Aldis Hodge: It's All Going to Be Okay | 13 Nov 2020 | 01:17:24
To say Aldis Hodge's career is heating up right now is a massive understatement. This moment, for him, can be more aptly described as "being in hyperspace". He is currently shooting season two of Showtime's City on a Hill, where he goes toe to toe with Kevin Bacon. He recently wrapped a season of his rebooted TNT series, Leverage. And he is preparing to enter the DC Universe, opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, playing Hawkman in the highly anticipated comic-inspired Black Adam. He was on short lists for an Oscar nomination for his work in the death row indie film, Clemency, and his upcoming festival favorite, One Night in Miami is already on early Oscar watch lists for next year. Other notable roles include MC Ren in Straight Outta Compton, Levi Jackson in Hidden Figures and Noah on the WGN America series Underground. On top of all of that, Hodge's passion for horology led him to bet on himself as an entrepreneur, creating a watch company that aims to stand out from the crowd. But Hodge was not born on Easy Street. His victories have been hard fought and his struggles have been real, including a stint where he and his brother lived with their mother, out of a car. He does not mince words and he brought the same fierce truth, and humor, to our conversation that he brings to his work as an actor. It is not the critic who counts. If you’ve been knocked down... get back up, dust yourself off, and get back in the game. If you want to give back, share this with someone who could use it. | Embrace Change, A New Day is Coming | 09 Nov 2020 | 00:11:48
As Andy Dufresne, in The Shawshank Redemption, once said, “get busy living or get busy dying.” Change is happening all the time, whether you like it or not. You have two choices: try to resist it, or embrace it and grow. Matt riffs on change and unexpected twists of fate, from presidential election results to personal and career ups and downs, waxing philosophical on the ever-shifting pendulum of life. Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 "No"s... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week. | Election Week Rerelease with Education Expert Marshall Tuck | 06 Nov 2020 | 01:16:08
In 2018, Matt sat down with Marshall Tuck after observing him speak off the cuff at a local fundraiser. Here is what he said about him back then: From Zimbabwe to South Central, Marshall Tuck has been making an impact on young people's lives through public education. If all goes well, he'll move the needle even more as California's next State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Tuck lost that battle in 2018, but we are confident that he will restore your faith in public servants who have our children’s best interests front of mind when it comes to education so we decided to rerelease that conversation with an updated introduction as a reminder of the highest ideals of politics when they mesh with a candidate’s heart and excellence of character. His story reminds us that, while we all hear NOs, when we are led by a higher purpose we can weather any storm. It is not the critic who counts. If you’ve been knocked down... get back up, dust yourself off, and get back in the game. If you want to give back, share this with someone who could use it. | Doers Do | 02 Nov 2020 | 00:10:44
Do the people that know you consider you a “doer”? If not, do you wish they did? It’s not some magical, philosophical musing that separates the doers from the non-doers, it is simply that one group does and the other group does not (get stuff done, take action, accomplish things, have an effect on others). Matt contemplates the benefits and drawbacks of being in either camp and riffs on different types of doers. | Book Release Week Special: Matt on Back to One Podcast | 30 Oct 2020 | 01:13:37
To celebrate the launch of Matt’s book, 10,000 NOs: How to Overcome Rejection on the Way to Your YES, this past Tuesday, we decided to put him on the hot seat. Through the generosity of Peter Rinaldi, host of Filmmaker Magazine’s Back to One Podcast, we were able to acquire their recent interview of Matt for the 10,000 NOs feed. Delving into some of the nitty gritty of Matt’s approach to acting as is typical on Back to One, Rinaldi also spends a portion of time linking the effects of writing a book on the art of storytelling in general as well as the interpretive work of an actor. | From Homeless to Hollywood Trainer, Stunt Performer and Actor: Aaron Williamson | 23 Oct 2020 | 01:03:20
You may be familiar with Hollywood stars such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, J.K. Simmons, James Marsden, Sylvester Stallone and Zac Efron, but you may not know the trainer that helped them build their incredible physiques, Aaron Williamson. Aaron went from Marine Corps, to being a celebrity trainer, to stunt man and now actor. But his path was far from smooth, he spent time living out of his car and overdosed at only 12 years old. He then transitioned to a personal trainer and after a chance encounter ended up working with Zac Efron for his role in "The Lucky One". Now he's moved on to being a stunt performer working on films such as The Purge, Birds of Prey, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, to name a few...and now he’s beginning a new journey into the craft of acting. | Song Exploder Mastermind Hrishikesh Hirway, on Being Disciplined, All The Way to the Top (Part II) | 16 Oct 2020 | 01:01:20
Hrishikesh Hirway is a humble high achiever. He has just released his first Netflix Mini-series, Song Exploder, based on his wildly popular podcast of the same name. On it, he talks to musicians like Alicia Keys, R.E.M., Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ty Dollar Sign. To say that it is huge, is an understatement. I met Hrishikesh when I was a guest on his other GIANT podcast that he co-created and co-hosted with my former cast mate from The West Wing and Scandal, Josh Malina – that podcast is The West Wing Weekly, yet another zeitgeist podcast. Originally, though, Hrishikesh moved to L.A. to record music and score films, so... as wildly successful as he is now, for a long time he still identified himself as a struggling, or failed, musician. His humility, combined with laser focus and attention to detail is perhaps what inspired me the most. | There Will Always Be Dog Hair to Dust and Dishes to Clean | 28 Sep 2020 | 00:05:27
Are there aspects of your profession, or your life, that you find yourself having to deal with every day? Of course there are, but that doesn't mean you have to complain about them. They are the proverbial dog hair dusting that's necessary if you want to enjoy your dog (that's not hypoallergenic) and they will bug you a lot less if you accept them as "part of the gig". People think acting is glamorous, and it can be, but being told "No" is part of the gig, and unless you can accept that as a very real portion of "following your dream", you're going to be miserable every day. It's not the obstacle... it's how we view the obstacle that determines if it is, in fact, an obstacle after all. And, PS. If you want to eat... you're going to have to clean the dishes (or do well enough that you have staff that takes care of them for you). | Mike Doyle: Create, create, create! | 19 Feb 2024 | 00:25:51
In TODAY'S EPISODE OF 10,000 NOs Podcast triple-threat Mike Doyle talks with me and my 10,000 NOs Insiders Community about his transition from an actor who was just waiting for the phone to ring to an actor who writes and directs his own films (with Academy Award nominees, Emmy Award winners and SAG Award winners) in order to have a bigger piece of the creative pie and tell stories that he's passionate about. | Emmy-Nominated Journalist, Author and Screenplay Writer Michele McPhee | 18 Sep 2020 | 00:55:54
Michele McPhee is an author, former talk radio host, screenwriter, five-time Emmy nominated investigative journalist (The Boston Globe, New York Daily News among others) and overall badass. And more recently a writer/producer on Showtime's City on a Hill. Michele has uncovered some of the highest profile cases & criminals in the United States. You're going to hear this for yourself, but she is not afraid to go after anyone, mobsters, FBI, anyone ... if they're in the way of her uncovering the truth on a story. She is unapologetically herself (including her awesome Boston accent) and what I really love about her is that, despite the fact that she literally puts her life on the line in the name of journalistic integrity, she is a total warm, softy. That's who she is: generous, real and seemingly connected to literally anyone who's anyone in Boston and beyond. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

When's the last time you did an assessment to see how close your life is to the dreams you had when you were younger? Have your goals changed? If so, have you taken steps to get closer to your new goals and dreams? While writing down your goals may not make your dreams happen overnight, like in the movies, it will do a lot to take something from an ethereal idea in your head and transform it into a reality that you, and others, can touch with your hands. Matt reveals both sides of this coin for his own life, with personal stories of some wins and losses. | Remembering September 11 with Firefighter Matt Long | 11 Sep 2020 | 01:32:12
FDNY hero and Ironman Matt Long came back to a thriving life after doctors told his family he had a one to five percent chance to live. If you're feeling knocked down, and almost out, by life right now, this is the interview you need to hear. You will walk away feeling that the impossible is doable and that miracles can happen. You will also be reminded of this podcast's tagline, "Failure is Opportunity", as you hear how Matt' did not merely survive his near-death crash, when he was literally run over by a bus on his bike, he has thrived as a result of what he went through, now using his story to inspire others through speaking and coaching. He is a true, real-life hero. We planned on returning to our new releases after Labor Day until we realized that the very next Friday landed on 9/11. We could not be more honored to present one of the courageous men who put his life on the line on that dark day in American history as 9/11 marked the beginning of a new journey for Matt after losing so many brothers. Never forget, never lay down and die, and remember what Matt told himself about walking (and running) again as he was sentenced to a wheelchair and attached to a colostamy bag: I WILL! You're human. You get tired. You have bad days, unproductive days... no one is immune. There are motivational gurus out there telling you that you can always be on, but is that the truth? Yes, there are systems that can be put in place, and habits that can be learned, but you also listen to your body and your internal rhythms and go easy on yourself at times. While grinding is admirable and necessary in many instances, acceptance and surrender can work miracles when the current is flowing against you. Count your blessings, and start over the next day. | Australia's Top 10 Female Entrepreneur Sue Hollis, You Are Not Your Business Card | 04 Sep 2020 | 00:57:45
Sue Hollis has every reason to be arrogant and obnoxious: she was a powerhouse corporate warrior for both British Airways and Qantas before realizing she wanted to make a bigger impact with her work. That's when she stepped down and co-founded TravelEdge, a corporate travel management company now valued over $250 Million, 20 years ago, making her one of Australia's Top 10 Female Entrepreneurs. But even that began to wear on her so she listened to her heart, stepped down from the CEO position and rode her BMW superbike solo around the Pacific Northwest for three months, eventually writing a book about the journey, “Riding Raw”, released in August 2018. Sue is now a coach and an "adventurepreneur" (a term she coined), based between Whistler, Canada and Sydney, Australia. When she came to my house she was coming from a motorcycle race track where she trains at speeds close to 200 mph... at 60 years of age! She has raised two successful boys. For all of her accomplishments, she could not have been cooler, kinder or more passionate and compassionate. What I loved about her is that she lets her values define her, not her accomplishments. I dare you not to love her and be inspired by her courage to listen to her heart and impact the world. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

"You can lose your Twitter account, you can lose your website, you can lose your email list but if you have your relationships, you're gonna be just fine. Even though you don't necessarily believe it."
Jordan Harbinger is the former creator/host of the wildly popular podcast, The Jordan Harbinger Show, which has grown to become a monster podcast with millions of downloads. A former Wall Street attorney and two-time kidnapping victim (yes, that's right), I caught Jordan as he transitions to his new podcast so we riffed about reinvention, how to look at sudden shifts in circumstances with excitement vs fear, and how to build an empire by following your bliss. Does fear have a grip on you? Metaphorically and literally, whatever it is that you're doing, if you're a human being on this earth, you are potentially in danger of being killed by some unknown force at ANY time: car accident, bad diagnosis, natural disaster, financial disaster, terrorism, the list goes on... | Actress Sarah Shahi, What Doesn’t Kill You Can Only Make You Stronger | 21 Aug 2020 | 01:09:17
Sarah Shahi is beautiful. But despite having graced the covers of countless magazines, it would be wrong to call that her defining quality. To sit down with her is to discover that she has humor, strength and grit that exceeds the average person. Perhaps her steel was forged in the fires of growing up one of the few Iranian immigrants in Texas, or maybe it was from surviving an abusive father who, addicted to drugs, held a gun to her head at the tender age of 6. Either way, this former Pageant Champion turned Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader had enough life force, and the help of an incredibly fierce mother and multiple women's shelters, to find a way out of Texas and onto our television and film screens since 2001. You may know Sarah from "City on a Hill", "The L Word", "Life", "Fairly Legal" and "Person of Interest", this is her story. | Chris Messina: Color Outside the Lines | 12 Feb 2024 | 00:24:48
Today’s episode features my longtime friend, Chris Messina, from when he graciously dropped in via Zoom as our Industry VIP to speak to the participants of our first Let's Shoot the Rehearsal Weekend-Intensive On-camera Retreat back in June of 2023 (we are very excited to be hosting our 4th iteration of the Weekend-Intensive next weekend). This is a MUST-LISTEN for the actors amongst you: Chris has made a career of coloring outside the lines, following his impulses and finding a unique way to interpret the material he works on. This past year, his performance in Ben Affleck's Air, though only consisting of phone calls with Matt Damon's character, placed him on a multitude of shortlists for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award. Ultimately, the nomination didn't come, but it's his ability and willingness to push the envelope and dig deeper than most other actors that has led to his long career working with the best in the business. | How Do You Want To Be Remembered? | 17 Aug 2020 | 00:09:31
If you died tomorrow, how would people honestly talk about you at your funeral? What would be on your tombstone, if you had one? Each day is a choice. Which self do you want to represent? The one that springs out of bed, grateful for another day on earth? Or the one that rolls over, hits the snooze button and then bitches throughout the day about all the things that went wrong? I've done both. I urge you, and myself, to choose the latter.

| Captain of America’s First Female Everest Expedition, Alison Levine | 14 Aug 2020 | 01:12:46 | |
I got to sit down with New York Times Best Selling Author (“On the Edge - The Art of High Impact Leadership") and Captain of America’s First Female Everest Expedition, Alison Levine. Alison is also a highly sought after corporate speaker and has even served as a consultant to the US Military. Even the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, appointed her to be his Deputy Finance Director when he ran for Governor of California. But, like every other guest of 10,000 “No” s, what I love about Alison is that, despite her accomplishments, her Ego is tiny compared to her desire to serve others through education and inspiration. Our conversation includes... What it takes to LITERALLY climb any mountain. “Failing” so epically that you are the butt of Jay Leno’s opening monologue. How, even if you were born with a heart defect, you choose to climb the highest peak on every continent and ski both poles and succeed. Why backing down is not the same as giving up. Why you should treat others with respect and kindness. Guest Links Show Links Follow 10,000 NOs on Instagram Tell Us Your Favorite Takeaway on Twitter Hosted on Acast. This is a re-release of an earlier Monday Morsel...After 15 interviews with uber-successful and articulate guests, I riff solo on what I've learned, what listeners are responding to, and where I plan to take 10,000 "No"s in the future. | Keeping a Positive Attitude, Grit and Faith with Best Selling Author Jon Gordon | 24 Jul 2020 | 01:19:52
Sitting down with Jon Gordon, it became immediately apparent why he is trusted by Major League managers and players, asked to speak to NFL teams and sit down one on one with entire rosters of Pros to ensure that their minds are focused on the daunting tasks their jobs require. He is a force of positivity who doesn't just motivate but encourages with a warmth that few possess (he literally took his "Positive Warrior" shirt off his own back to give it to me when we finished our interview). While his faith in God is strong and apparent, there is nothing close to "holier than thou" in his attitude. Instead, he possesses a humble desire to serve, which is the central theme throughout all of his books on leadership, in and out of the business world, including all 6 of his best-sellers which have been read by millions. When I think of the man I'd like to be, it's not far off from Jon Gordon, who has somehow managed to maintain a great family, a booming career and the ability to impact and help both strangers and friends. | Be Self-Reliant AND Dependent on Something Bigger Than You | 05 Feb 2024 | 00:12:34
Today’s episode is a solo riff based on two podcasts that I recently listened to: former 10,000 NOs guest, Bedros Keuilian on The Bedros Keuilian Show talking about How to Silence the Negative Voices In Your Head in 2024 and Father Mike Schmitz on The Bible in a Year on Day 25: Job’s Questioning. I delve into the merits of hard work and daily tasks, while also discussing the need for faith and belief in something larger than what is right in front of you (the spiritual realm). I also get into our attitudes and feelings about our sufferings, offering a lesson from the famous biblical story about Job.
