'Invisible Woman' || LAUREN MINEAR18 Jan 202300:50:59
Lauren Minear, a singer/songwriter from upstate NY.

Lauren released her debut album, Invisible Woman, in October this year with a sold-out launch show at the Red Room in Manhattan.

The album explores womanhood and the role of a mother in the modern world. Lauren was inspired to make the album after having her second child just as the pandemic started and navigating the difficulties of motherhood/postpartum depression during that strange time.

Lauren's story is a fascinating one; raised in Nashville, graduated from Yale, worked in Finance in NY, trained as a psychotherapist, is a mother to 2 boys, now pursuing a career in music and building real momentum.

On the back of our 'Top 10 Movie Soundtracks' episode, Glen and I take on the epic task of figuring out who the 'Top Soundtrack Composers' are!

We have a 16-Composer-Round-Robin Tournament in the wings - but first we must have 7 composers battle it out in the Wild Card Round!!

We decided to have all the "new school" composers battle it out for the 3 remaining spots in the 16 composer brackets...basically, this round is 6 "new school" composers...and James Newton Howard!

Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood, Inherent Vice, The Master, Phantom Thread)
vs
James Newton Howard (Signs, Waterworld, Falling Down, The Fugitive, Collateral, Unbreakable)

Nick Hail - 'Anime Girl' (single)28 Nov 202100:39:28
The incomparable Nick Hail calls in from South Africa to discuss his latest hit single ('Anime Girl') and the events that led to him winning "Best African Actor" at the Continental Film Awards!!

Nick hosts a great podcast, too - shoutout to "Enter the Muse".

Nick is releasing 2 singles per month for the months of November, December and January - he will then release a compilation EP of said singles on February 20th, 2022.

That date marks the anniversary of his older brother's passing. We get into how that situation has affected his life ever since, as well as what it has meant to this musical endeavour.

I always love talking with Nick - he is a very thoughtful guy and has a very unique take on the arts and creation!

I am sure you'll enjoy this talk!

Tawni Bias - 'SEL Fellow'21 Nov 202100:38:39
From Calgary, Alberta - TJ Elkin is on the show today to promote his projects release!

Tawni Bias is the project name, 'SEL Fellow' is the album title.

The album is a lush, beautiful & eclectic collection of genres and layers. The project started back in 2019 and has been TJ's labour of love for the past few years, helping himself deal with & process some personal grieving - as well as providing an empathetic soundtrack to those going through their own grieving.

We talked a lot about TJ's creative process in this episode, too, which always makes for fascinating conversation!

Great interview, wonderful album..and TJ is a super rad guy as you will hear.
**He will be back on the show very soon to do his own #10Albums 👀

PS - stay tuned at the end of the episode for the 1st single of 'SEL Fellow' - entitled "Pulling Starch".

3rd Anniversary / Season 4 Kick-off Show!! ('Kiss This Guy' and other lyric mistakes)04 Nov 202100:16:01
Season 3 is in the bag! ..Onto Season 4!!

This is just a quick episode based on some song lyrics that have been misinterpreted or mis-heard, such as Jimi Hendrix in 'Purple Haze' singing "Scuze me while I kiss this guy".

I am notorious for butchering lyrics...how are you with this?? I have some friends that are always just bang-on with lyrics - and they are always really happy to point out to me the real lyrics 😂

I visited www.kissthisguy.com for some references. 👀

...any funny lyrical misinterpretations on your end? Send them our way!

Ground Level Falcons - 'Skyline'03 Oct 202100:33:14
I am proud to announce my band (Ground Level Falcons) has released our beautiful new album!!

This podcast will debut the first single 'Your Face Gives It Away' (29:14)

I give a detailed breakdown of how the pandemic affected the production of the album, as well as the story behind the album itself!

✅ 'Skyline' is now available on any streaming music site!!

Also visit or purchase at :
www.groundlevelfalcons.bandcamp.com

____________________________________________

Ground Level Falcons are back with their 5th LP, ‘Skyline’.
Release date : September 22nd, 2021.

This album was the bands most challenging to release, due to the start/stop nature of the pandemic of the past 18 months.
Despite the lockdowns and some lengthy gaps in practicing - the band put together, what they all believe to be, their strongest effort to date!

The GLF camp is back to a full lineup : bassist Greg Kolodychuk and lead guitarist/keyboardist Adrian Armitage have both returned from a 3 and a 4 year absence, respectively.
The last album both Greg and Adrian were a part of was 2017s ‘The New Wilderness’.

Backing vocalist, Olivia Ostrom, appears on all the songs this time around - she had made her debut on 2019s ‘Good Living Foundation’ , appearing on the last 2 songs of that album.

This album marks the 10-Year-Anniversary for the band, as well.
The band started out in the fall of 2011.

‘Skyline’ is the bands first self-produced album to date; frontman Matt Gardiner took on the engineering & mixing.
The band used the analog online mastering service ARIA Mastering for the 2nd straight release.

The album is a wonderful blend of 60s/70s and grunge era music.

ABOUT THE ALBUM :

‘Skyline’ is actually the prequel to 2019s ‘Good Living Foundation’ , story-line wise.

‘Skyline’ takes place on the Skyline Trail - which is located in Jasper, Alberta, Canada. The protagonist (Trent Hemingway) has recently broken up with his girlfriend (Amy) and has taken to the Skyline Hike to clear his head.

Skyline Trail is a 27mile hike that has 5 campsites throughout to break up the hike.

Each song represents a different stops on the hike - which adds up to 7 stops when you include the starting and finishing points.

Each song also represents a different stage of the “7 Stages of Recovery*” as it relates to dealing with the end of this relationship.

As the songs take on the different stages of recovery - the album, itself, plays quite beautifully as a story.

Olivia’s parts are varied from sparse & hauntingly, being placed in the background, to straight-up duets with Matt, depending on what part of the story is being told.

7 Songs & Stages :
1 - ‘The Human Trigger’ = Shock & Denial
2 - ‘Your Face Gives It Away’ = Pain & Guilt
3 - ‘Blood Memory’ = Anger & Bargaining
4 - ‘DisLocation’ = Depression
5 - ‘Strawberry Moon’ = The Upward Turn
6 - ‘Running Like a River’ = Reconstruction
7 - ‘Skyline’ = Acceptance & Hope

Tip of the cap to :
Babes in Toyland, L7, Screaming Trees....as well as Pearl Jam - 'No Code', Radiohead - 'Pablo Honey', Weezer's blue album...
Also the almost, but not quite fitting the bill : Kyuss and Live

**Also want to consider Foo Fighters as more of a 'post-grunge' band.

...on a final side-note : does Bush - 'Sixteen Stone' deserve to be on this list? Thoughts?

Neil Young - Homegrown04 May 202100:11:16
For a certain kind of music lover, there’s nothing more alluring than a “lost” album. Unlike a record that was merely “scrapped” or “never released,” the term suggests something both mysterious and not worth losing—especially when that album is fabled to be particularly emotionally raw, and especially when the artist who created it is beloved precisely for his rawness, but also for his reticence. “Sometimes life hurts,” Neil Young wrote in a blog post announcing that he was finally releasing Homegrown, an album that’s something of a unicorn among the sort of fans who read his Times-Contrarian newspaper. “This is the one that got away.” -Pitchfork.com Fantastic addition to Neil Young's catalogue !! A must for any fan.
